Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield Rocky Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:23 PM, and began the ‘round table discussion. Bill Miller: No TT information to report yet, but will report AX for Chuck Machala. AX #1 had 86 cars with 6 runs per entry. The new radios did not work well with surrounding car and wind noise. Tried using headsets, but the headsets did not eliminate the problems. Unfortunately it has been too long since the purchase to return or ask for a refund. Thus, we have six pair of radios at ~$70/pair that do not work as desired. Likewise, two units have damaged battery connections. Rocky asks if we call sell the radios to the membership, suggesting someone can use the radios personally, for example, on a Maverick Tour. Bill makes the motion to sell the radios at $45/pair to the membership. Joel seconds, and the motion passes. Bill poses the question, given the 86 entrants and three run groups at AX #1, should we limit the number of entrants to ensure more runs per entrant? Some entrants were not happy with only 6 runs and the worker rotation delays associated with a three-group rotation. Rocky suggests starting the event earlier in the day to allow more time for more runs. Jan suggests that no policy get set based on this one event. The AX committee will monitor future attendance and runs, without entrant limits. Bill (using his best Joe impersonation) also mentions that some AX flags are “used up,” frayed and torn and need replacing. The flags do not need replacing immediately but will in the near future. And of course we now need AX radios. (Spoken just like Joe) Wendy Shoffit: AX #1 brought in $2,300 with Park Place Porsche (PPP) sponsorship covering the cost to rent the TMS facilities. Lanean adds that PPP provided $2,000 in sponsorship for the TMS AX. Randall Johnson from PPP was very happy with the event. PPP also provided long sleeve Polo shirts to entrants and the shirts were a big hit. TT #1 & AX #2 scheduled for 4/23 & 4/24 respectively. The position of “Social Chair” remains vacant, but Wendy and Jan will serve as interim chairs to help setup the Father’s Day, Founder’s Day, and Holiday Party events. The Evite application does not function as desired to track event RSVPs, and will not be pursued. Hope Shelter received 64 boxes of Girl Scout cookies as part of the Girl Scout cookie drive. Jan Mayo: Attended the SCCA Fire & Rescue (Crash & Burn) school supported by MR. Eight of the 39 attendees from MR. Felt that the event had poor attendance since the date was the day before Easter, which may have kept some folks away. Joe, who also attended the school, notes that the SCCA recognized MR for attendance as well as sponsorship. Lanean Hughes: Hope Shelter building permits done. Next step is to purchase $10,000-$15,000 of building materials. Hope has a $150,000 loan in place if needed. Local dealerships may provide additional funds for the shelter. Club Race next month at MSR still needs volunteers, and volunteers should sign up on the MR web site. Currently, the Club Race has 15 applications, but none from local Mavericks. Club Race “Special” will refund entry fee to one lucky drawing winner from one of the first 35 applications received. Have received $8,000 sponsorship from Boardwalk Porsche for the May Club Race. MR has not kept up the region Scrapbook for the past two years. The region needs a volunteer to take on the duties of maintaining the scrapbook. Next year, a scrapbook will not be necessary for applying for the National award of Region of the Year. Robyn Howard: Wants to know what type of Goodies to order for the Goodie Store and needs money to order the Goodies. Rocky suggests getting some 50th Anniversary items from PCA and suggests promoting a “Group Buy” to help support the region. Other suggestions include helmet bags and pajama pants. Wendy moves to allocate the Goodie Store $1,000 to buy inventory. Joel seconds, and the motion carries. Mark Gluck: Event insurance in place for the May TT & AX, Tour, Club Race and DE. Michael Wingfield: Have received approximately 30 applications for the DE held in conjunction with the May Club Race. We will accept about 55 entrants, so we still have room. Mike Brodigan: Continuing talks with Kevin Hardison about expanding Slipstream. Bill Dawson: February MSR DE was a big success even if we did set a new record for the number of spins in one weekend. (Do you think the cold and rain had any effect?) Darren Shaffer: Suggests sending a “Thank you” to ’04 Parade attendees as for attending and include a Hope Shelter status and solicit for more funds to support the Hope Shelter building project. Jan interjects that Parade attendees already donated $4,000 to Hope Shelter via a donation box. Wendy suggests printing a donation slip in Slipstream along with an article on the building status. Joel Nannis: We have 1,174 members. Dennis Chamberlain: 26 folks attended the last HH. Fair attendance considering the date conflicted with the Boardwalk Porsche presentation party of the new Boxster. Next HH will be at the Bavarian Grill in Plano on May 21. Requests more lead time in developing event ads for Slipstream. Jeff Atkins: Quarterly finance statement will be available at the next meeting. Rocky Johnson: Forms for submitting National award nominees for Parade ’05 in hand. Jan suggests that MR submit Wendy as a candidate for the Enthusiast of the Year, and Jan will complete the form. Jan mentions that the Family of the Year award nominees may now include families without children. Rocky suggest that MR submit Jan & Ed Mayo as candidates for the Family of the Year. Wendy will complete the form. MR contacted by other car clubs to participate or co-host events. For example, the Italian Car Club would like MR participation in their Italian Car Fest Weekend to be held at TMS. Entry is $150 per day. Event information will appear on the MRPCA egroups board at Yahoo. Likewise, the Subaru club is holding a rally and invites MR to participate. The Jaguar Club wants to use MR timing equipment for one of their events, and will donate $500 to Hope Shelter for the use. MR volunteers will need to participate in the event to operate the timing equipment. Another request invites MR to hold an event at the Air Museum at Love Field. Perhaps Dennis can work out a HH that includes a visit to the museum. Boardwalk Porsche in Plano will host the May Board meeting, Rocky will host the June meeting, and Lanean will host the July meeting. The April meeting adjourned at 9:12 PM. Las Colinas Photo Rally Postponed! Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the photo rally that was scheduled to be held on March 26th had to be postponed.We’re hoping that the weather will be nicer on July 23rd. Please mark your calendars to participate in this extremely fun event. Typically, Porsche Club events get scarcer as the temperature rises during the summer months. You won’t find many driving events at this time. This event promises to be interesting and fun. At the end, we’ll even stop for ice cream! For those of you who don’t know what a photo rally is, it’s basically a scavenger hunt. The objective is to find objects shown in a bunch of photos and answer a question about it or something very nearby (behind it, next to it, etc.). You’ll need a keen eye as some items will be a little harder than others to find. You’ll get to know the Las Colinas area really well while having fun with your friends. Hope to see you on July 23rd! Happy Hour at The Sea Grill by Dennis Chamberlain Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Monda Degan and Mike Lockas We had a moderate but festive crowd for our first happy hour at Cantina Laredo. New attendees included Mike Sliva (1983 911 SC), who has been a member for some time but was attending his first function, and Phil Childrey (2002 911 Targa), who had just joined the club two weeks earlier. We also had two visitors and potential members. Johnny Wallace is a Porsche owner and a friend of Clarence Wyatt’s, along with Gisselle Miranda, who has been a 1987 Targa owner for some time. Gisselle explained that she found out about PCA activities in general from a friend in Los Angeles and more about our club from searching the Internet.
