Rally at the Nasher
by Wayne Elliott
Rain was in the forecast, but it didn’t ruin our time
at the Nasher Sculpture Garden. It may have been
the beautiful “Walking to the Sky” exhibit that held
an invisible umbrella, but we were spared the rain and 15
club members enjoyed an afternoon searching the beautiful
objets d’art for rally clues.
This was
not your normal
rally. There were
no hard to follow
instructions, no
tire warm ups, no
odometer check,
in fact, there
weren’t any cars
involved at all.
This was a walking
rally.
When each
of us arrived, we
were greeted by
Teri Davis, the
event organizer,
and her husband,
James joins the sculpture walkers Charlie, the photographer.
She
walking to the sky
simply gave us a piece of paper with 20 pictures and 20
clues and told to match them up. Everyone soon discovered
that we had to find the subject of the photograph, and then
match it to the correct clue. Not as easy as it sounds! Many
of the photographs were taken from unusual angles, including
from the back, so just finding the subject was sometimes
difficult, but forced us to look closely at each piece.
Then, determining the proper clue forced us to read the
informational plaque. Imagine – it’s like they wanted us
to learn something! Well, no harm done and everyone enjoyed
themselves and the friendly competition.
As with all competitions, there were some winners, but
there were no
losers on this
day. Everyone
got all the
right answers,
some were
just a little
faster than
others.
There was
Linda Bamina and Dee Lersch
a three-way tie
for first place at 36 minutes between our president, James
Shoffit, his daughter Jasmine, and Kevan Davis. Wendy
Shoffit came in at fourth place and let’s say everyone else
tied for fifth.
Trophy winners goofing off after being so serious for so long
I think it’s safe to say we all enjoyed both the inside
artwork and sculptures, as well as the larger, sometimes
thought provoking outdoor presentations. Mr. and Mrs.
Nasher have given the City of Dallas a world-class gift and
I would encourage everyone to visit the Garden and take
a few hours to enjoy the beauty. Thanks to Teri and Charlie
for their efforts to organize this event and for choosing
such a wonderful location.
Let’s hope the weather holds for the next DE event – I
made it to Blue Solo!
Even in the rain the Nasher was a beautiful place
