Drifting Mik e Brodig an, Pr eside nt As I write this, Porsche Parade has just ended. As always, we had a bunch of trophy winners. <strong>Slipstream</strong> received 2nd in class for the largest regions, and our members had a great showing in several areas, including cars going fast, and cars looking beautiful. Look for more stories in this issue... The cars looking beautiful (Concours d’Elegance) is the competition that gets me. Now don’t get me wrong, I like a clean car as much as the next guy, but these guys go crazy. One time I asked Ed Mayo how long it took to prep a car. I thought maybe a day or two. Wrong! Some guys take several months to prepare their cars. I think the real fanatics wrap them in cellophane and place them in an airtight containers. At last year’s Parade, I watched the judges do their thing. I think they are darn near as crazy as the contestants. They can find nooks and crannies that even Porsche AG doesn’t know exist. Anyway, those are some CLEAN cars. I hear a lot of members discussing what their favorite model Porsche is. Lets take a poll. What is your favorite model Porsche? Mine is a 1987 Porsche 911. Zap me an e-mail at president@mavpca.org and let me know yours. I will report the results next month. This is Mike’s “get your money’s worth” advice. There are a lot of folks out there who have not yet taken an opportunity to take part in our events. We are one of the most active PCA regions in the country. Take a minute to look at our calendar of events and pick one. Our event chairs go to great lengths to provide our members with fun, well-run events. So whether you like driving, showing your car, or having fun at a social, we have something for you. Come join in. Every year about this time the region starts the process of election of officers. The first step is to appoint a nomination committee. This year James Shoffit is the chairman. If you are interested in running for an office or know someone you think would be interested, let James know at james@shoffit.com. Mav of the Month This month’s Mav of the month is a couple. Charlie and Teri Davis have been active Mavs for years. Charlie is everywhere taking pictures. He also takes care of the “Truckster” (our autocross storage and timing truck), and is an active part of our autocross team. Teri ran our rally program, and is very involved with PCA on the national level. The Davises are at most of our monthly meetings, giving us their valuable insights. For being the Mavericks of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Charlie & Teri dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Charlie & Teri, thanks for all you do. Mike 2
A Brief Look Back at the “Backyard Project” By Linda Bambina It was the end of October, 2009 when Prez Mike approached me about being the “project manager” for a big plan that he and Clara Lewis had come up with: a major renovation for the backyard at the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, Maverick Region’s chosen charity for close to two decades. Some of you might have seen the “From the Regions” article in Panorama with an excellent picture of Mike and Joel Nannis (thanks, Charlie!) assembling a section of the playground equipment that took more than 10 hours to complete. They ran the picture, but not the caption: “Check out the fine effort from President Mike Brodigan and long-time Membership Chair, Joel Nannis as they assemble one of the 2,000 parts on this playset with the infamous Star Wrench!” And like so many aspects of big projects, there are 857 stories behind the scenes….. just ask James or Wendy Shoffit about that wrench! Getting the playground equipment delivered, unloaded and installed was just one piece of the Big Picture. There was also drainage issues, sprinkler system re-routes, flagstone fitting, cement patio design and implementation as well as landscaping design, prep and planting, plus the infamous Kiddie Cushion requirements. To quote myself in the Pano article: “While Mavericks have donated clothing, appliances, furniture, toys and more for more than a decade now, this project would require cash and physical labor to bring it up to our Porsche Excellence is Expected standards!” Yep! The project was scaled back to “just” $14,361. Once again, there are MANY stories behind the fund-raising for this much money in the short amount of time I had to get it done. With Parade in early July, I knew that the middle of June was my absolute deadline to be finished. Somehow it happened. Special thanks to Wendy, Jan Mayo, Lisa Steele and Christy Payne for their hard work. Bit by bit, piece by piece, 31 Mavericks came through. That’s right. 31 people stepped up and made it all possible. Eight couples even gave $1,000 each, joining the Millennium Club that Mike created. (Those generous folks will be getting their names on the bricks outside the Hope House, joining the few who were the builders and the shakers for building the Hope House 3 ½ years ago.) Another miracle happened. An “old Maverick,” landscape artist Eric Devonport, proposed driving out to Mineral Wells and spending two 12 hour days with one of his landscape design workers and stone fitters to get the rest of the job DONE. And we did. Lisa Huffaker stepped up, put in at least 10 hours a day on this project, got her husband to do the cement work, took down part of the fence to increase access, invited Eric and his worker to stay at her home, saving money for the project in that way, even fed us as part of her contribution! May 18th … Mission Impossible… was completed. About a month later, Prez Mike and wife, Judy, had a wonderful celebration for everyone who contributed their time, energy or money to the successful outcome of this amazing event. Once again, Charlie took some fantastic pictures at the party. He also took the most beautiful sunset view of the entire backyard with a fabulous wide angle lens. They even presented an engraved rock to add to the Hope House’s backyard ambiance in honor of Clara Lewis and me. It says, “The foundation for HOPE is built one rock at a time.” Jan Mayo encouraged me to come up with an alliteration to explain my passion for this Hope House Transformation: From Down and Dirty ~ To Positively Pleasant Hugs to all of you who helped.
