* We have had thirty-five Presidents,
many repeating the job for
multiple years: James Shoffit a
record four times, and two females:
Joan Gibbs and Fran Ussery.
* We have hosted the Porsche
Parade twice, in 1987 and 2004
-- BOTH times with a female Chair.
Teri Davis was the first female to
ever lead a Parade in 32 years; and
Jan Mayo was the 2004 Chair. We
also had five Parade Chairs at the
San Antonio Parade in 1997 and
provided many teams to help out.
* Charlie Davis, Joel Nannis and
James Shoffit have all performed
the Maverick “Hat Trick” -→been
President, Slipstream Editor,
and received the Selcer Award.
* Slipstream Editor is by far the
most demanding of all volunteer
jobs in the club. Several saints have
stepped up and done it multiple
years: Fran Ussery and Richard
Bradley - three years each; Jan
Mayo - four years; Teri Davis - five
years; and Wendy Shoffit - six years!
* Maverick Region has been a
leader, instigator, forerunner, and
trendsetter for many things that
have been copied or adopted by
other regions or at the National
level. Among those things have
been “Charlie’s Charts” (classifying
cars for autocross), the first
Parade (1987) that used computers
not only for registration, but for
ALL competitive events (again, a
Charlie-plan.) We held the first
R.C. car Parade event (indoors!);
put on the first dual-course Parade
Autocross; hosted the first Ice
Cream Social after the Rally; it
was the first time that Children’s
and Family Events were incorporated
into the Parade schedule
(all 1987); and the first Parade
Costume Concours (1997). In
addition, PCA National many years
ago adopted our phrase “It’s Not
Just the Cars, It’s the People” from
Alan Bambina’s President’s column
and Teri Davis’s Parade T-shirts.
* And I predict that our 50th
Anniversary tagline (thank you
again, Fran!), “Driving Friendships
for 50 Years” will also
get adopted by National!
