Maverick Minutes By Gareth Maurice, Guest Scribe August 1, 2012 Dear Mavericks, I’d like to thank Gareth Maurice for attending this meeting and typing up the following notes. Merci! - Madhu Rao Our August Board Meeting was back in full swing after taking the month of July off, since many members Not Gareth Maurice attended the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City. Region President John Hamilton was unable to attend but was able to find someone with the same initials to take his place, and so John Harvey presided over the meeting. Madhu Rao, our Region Secretary, was enjoying some time off and so I have attempted to fill his place. The meeting began just after 7pm and lasted for approximately an hour and forty minutes. We had a great turnout with twenty-five people showing up, but best of all we had three new members attend for the first time. Marlee and Craig Shaw, who have been with various Porsche Clubs for years and are former DE Instructors, joined Shaina Drummond who recently moved here from the Carolinas as our three first time guests. Wendy Shoffit kicked off the meeting with a very special award to Richard Bradley, the previous Managing Editor of our monthly newsletter, Slipstream. His wife Robin and son Ethan were in attendance for Richard to receive the inaugural Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence, recognizing his work in making this the #1 Regional newsletter in the land. Great job, Richard! Christy Payne, filling in for 8 Membership Chair Lisa Steele, informed us of how well we are growing. The Maverick Region now has a total of 2,164 members, which is up almost twenty members since May. Keep inviting your Porsche friends to join. While the membership is up, the number of raffle tickets to Germany is down. WOOOHOOO! They now stand at less than (100) tickets for the One Week Trip for Two! Let Christy know if you have changed your mind, but you had better hurry. Marlee Shaw, our new member from Idaho, then informed us the Lions Club in Keller will be hosting a special benefit for a friend with cancer on Saturday, August 25. Please watch for additional details in the President’s email. Webmaster Denny Payne said many of us have mentioned how frustrating it is to go through the classified ad placement process, but he hears us and is working on a fix with the National office to automate the process and hopefully feed the National system as well. Treasurer Jim Falgout stated that the Maverick Region has a positive cash position and Pat Friend mentioned the Advertising renewals for Slipstream are about to go out. The annual advertisements are a great way to reach over 2,164 members both in print and on-line and so if you know any businesses looking to reach a new audience, please let Pat know. Not to let the boys share all of the good news, Drivers’ Ed Chair Lori Mauthe casually let it slip that all Driver’s Education events (DE’s) this year have been cash-positive. We all especially seemed to like the June one-day event as well! Speaking of the DE events, Lori confirmed that in the July 18 DE Committee meeting it was determined that Big Brothers Big Sisters will return for the next DE event at MotorSport Ranch in September. (I personally attended the June DE and it was a great experience to share my car with a child as we drove the Charity Laps during lunch. Apparently he did not like the No Passing rule though. Hehehe). The September DE will have all sorts of extras too: an instructor led Track Walk teaching the finer points of how to attack the track, and Boardwalk will be bringing a new 2013 Boxster for everyone to see, along with hosting a BBQ dinner. Our Nominating Committee informed everyone there will be a few positions opening up for next year and so if you want to take a more prominent role within the Club please reach out to Lori Mauthe, Bruce McQuaid or Luke Edson. After showing off Richard Bradley’s trophy to everyone, Wendy Shoffit informed us that thirty-eight Mavericks attended the Salt Lake City Porsche Parade. Way to represent the Club, everyone! Seeing you liked Salt Lake so much, get ready because the 2013 Parade is in Traverse City, Michigan, and the 2014 edition will be in Monterey, California. (Strange that no one plans anything for Texas in July… oh well, maybe 2015.) Registration for Escape to the Ozarks will open August 13, and the event will be held November 8-11. Driving School Chair Robyn Howard and Time Trial Chair Travis Howard, along with Autocross Chair Al Silva, gave us a great update on the Time Trial and Autocross events that were held June 16 and 17. They had a fantastic turnout, and several new
attendees came out to learn how to handle their car better. As usual everyone loved it. Also, Robyn and Travis both competed in the Parade Autocross, with Robyn winning her class. (Now I am not saying she beat Travis, but he is no longer undefeated.) Happy Hour Chair Mike Farrar is looking forward to everyone joining him for the next Happy Hour at the Fox & the Hound in Lewisville on Thursday, August 16 at 6:30pm. PR Assistant Renee Farinella attended the Autos in the Park event and reiterated that it went very well. See her article in the August Slipstream for details. She is going to begin taking on a bigger role in promoting the Club from a PR perspective and will be working more with Linda Bambina. Carey “the Kilt Wearing” Spreen (see the August Slipstream cover) is going to resurrect a “Hare and Hound” Rally in parallel with the upcoming September 29 Wine Tasting Drive. The Hare takes off ahead of the others, leaving markers as he drives his route. The Hounds follow later and the closest to the Hare’s final mileage wins. This can be a lot of fun for the kids, too, to help the driver spot the markers! John Harvey wrapped up the meeting by inviting everyone to attend the Bartonville Wine Tasting Drive. There will likely be four groups going for an afternoon drive ending at Grapes to Wine in Bartonville, with Italian food from Carraba’s. They have a large back room reserved for our group and you are guaranteed to have a GRAPE time. And on that note the meeting closed! Parts or Service, We Deliver Excellence.
