We took a test drive and ended
up buying the very Cayman at
Boardwalk Porsche that popped
up on the Internet search. We
were fortunate to score the very
enthusiastic Mark Laurenzi as our
salesman. Mark took each of us
out for a “spirited” test drive that
demonstrated the Cayman perfectly
and we were hooked. We bought
our first Porsche, never having
considered a Porsche before. We
did so spur of the moment without
the usual agonizing and research
we normally would have done.
I posted a thread on a Porsche-related
chat board that the response
to our purchase was a mixed bag at
best. The responses ranged from
dead silence, to those similar to
my son’s. The thread exploded in
twelve hours to ten pages long. The
responses ranged along the lines of
“I don’t care what anyone thinks” to
“We just ordered our first Porsche
and my wife has already given me
the list of people who can and can’t
see it.” My personal favorite was
“I hate it when my boss sees me
driving the Porsche. (It) makes it
difficult to whine about my salary.”
Good to know I was not alone.
The point of my story is this:
there is a place to enjoy your
vehicle among those who own
Porsches and share your enthusiasm.
Activities of all kinds and
interests abound. You can partake
of a few, or fill your calendar.
We joined PCA to learn more
about our purchase and to get
the most out of owning the vehicle.
We started reading about
all of the activities in Slipstream. It
took us a little while to “get out
on the dance floor” so to speak,
but we are so happy we did.
Our first Maverick function was
a Thursday evening social. We
have already met many wonderful,
open and welcoming people.
There are socials, rallies, Sunday
drives, car shows, Autocross,
and the list goes and on.
We plan to register for the Driver
Education events this fall. Did you
know that you can visit the track
without being registered for the
event, or waiting for an “Intro
to DE” drive to be scheduled?
You can show up, watch, listen,
and learn a lot about DEs. You
can purchase a lunch at a low
cost while there. And, for a small
donation to the club charity, you
can drive your car out on the
track for several parade laps during
the lunch break either day.
We have driven the parade laps
at both Eagles Canyon and Motorsport
Ranch. They were more
spirited, the time on the track
was longer, and they were more
fun than we imagined possible.
A visit to the track during a DE
gives you an excellent opportunity
