Drifting: Year-End Report – Your Maverick Region

It has been another great year
for the Maverick Region, as
our membership ranks have
swollen to an all-time high (2,281
members and associate members
as of Oct. 31), and our treasury is
healthy at over $85,000 as of Oct. 1.
Officer elections were completed at our recent Founders’
Day event, with Jim Falgout returning as Treasurer,
Gareth Maurice as V.P., myself as President, and newlyelected
Wendy Shoffit joining us as Region Secretary.
Our Founders’ Day was great fun, with an insider’s
presentation from the Porsche Cars North
America Regional Manager Steve Krysil, who
shared some possibilities of new cars and models
coming down the line, along with some stunning
videos of Porsches in action on the track. In addition,
the silent auction was an overwhelming
success with exactly $3,500 raised for the benefit of
our charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House.
Also at Founders’ Day, we honored two of our
top contributors this year with awards. The Gregg
Murrell Driving Enthusiast award went to Lori
Mauthe for her outstanding contributions as Drivers’
Education Chair throughout the year. And the
Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award, to acknowledge
outstanding contributions to the Maverick Region,
was presented to Travis Howard, who has been
Chair of the Time Trial events as well as Gridmaster
at our Drivers’ Education events, and also took on
the responsibilities of Autocross Chair this year.
The Drivers’ Education program ended the year
on a high note: the November 9 one-day event had
well over 100 cars and drivers participating. And
there are more driving events still to
come before the year ends including
a Sunday Drive and two Time Trials.
I hope you’ve been able to find the
time to enjoy some of these great
events, in addition to benefiting from
your Porsche Club discount at the
Porsche dealers and many of our advertisers.
I also hope you receive enjoyment
and knowledge from each issue
of the Slipstream and Panorama magazines
that you receive every month.

Mav of the Month
It’s interesting to me how the skills that we’ve acquired
in our schooling and professional lives can so
often be applied to our volunteer endeavors. Such is
certainly the case with this month’s Mav of the Month
recipient, Tracy Robertson. Tracy has applied her
team-management and organizational skills to engineer
and deliver an outstanding Founders’ Day event
at the centrally-located NYLO hotel in
Irving. Tracy and her team found the
location, took care of all the decorations
and signage, acquired all the
donated products and services for the
silent auction, and did so many more
little things that made the program
such a success. So, congratulations,
Tracy, for once again (also earned
in March 2013) being our Mav of
the Month. Enjoy your gift to the
Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine
with our sincerest appreciation.

It doesn’t seem
possible, but
the year is
coming to a close,
and 2014 is right
around the corner.
It has been
a good year
for the Maverick Region, and
we hope you have been able
to come out to an event or two
to see what we’re all about.
If you haven’t, there’s still time
before the holidays! The final
Sunday Drive of the year, known
as the Frick’n Toy Run (because it
was thought up by members Dave
and Jean Frick), takes place on
Sunday, December 8. The price of
entry this time is a $25 Walmart
gift card, which will be donated to
our charity, the Huffaker-Hughes
Hope House, a shelter for battered
women and children in the wake of
domestic violence. As of this writing
in mid-November, a starting point
has not been finalized. Our website,
mav.pca.org, has that information.
Our Holiday Party this year returns
to a private home, this year hosted
by Linda and Lee Wilkins on Saturday,
December 14. For the nominal
fee of $15 per person, you get
dinner catered by Maggiano’s Little
Italy, as well as adult beverages and
soft drinks. If you want to help out
with hors d’oeuvres or dessert, you
are more than welcome to sign up
for that as well. We ask that you
bring a $25 Walmart gift card, again
to be donated to the Hope House.
If you still haven’t gotten enough
of our competitive driving
events, there is a double Time
Trial weekend at the Mineral-
Ring on December 7 and 8.
Our Maverick Social series (formerly
known as Happy Hour)
continues in December at Ruggeri’s
in Dallas, as do our informal
lunch gatherings in Lewisville,
Southlake, and Richardson, so
there are still plenty of opportunities
to get together with other
Mavericks before the year is out.
Our annual All Member Party is
coming up in January, the weekend
before the Super Bowl, so
make plans to be there for the
drawing for the one-year lease
on a new Porsche Macan! It’s not
too late to buy a ticket or ten!

Maverick Minutes: November Board Meeting

began the meeting
at 7:10 by
acknowledging
the efforts around
and success of the
Founders’ Day event, held Saturday
night, November 2 at the NYLO
Hotel in Irving. He said he thought
the venue was great and gave kudos
to Social Chair Tracy Robertson on
a great job creating value for the
membership with visibility, charity,
fun gear to bid on, and an opportunity
to build the friendships part
of “It’s not just about the cars…”.
Hence, Tracy was selected as Maverick
of the Month! We all appreciate
your talents and hard work!
Tracy’s husband David helped
out at the event with the Porsche
presentation and was instrumental
in resolving some technical issues.
A lot of folks from Club Racing
were there; not our customary
social event attendees. Club Race
Registrar Wendy Shoffit said that,
in her efforts to let people know
about Founders’ Day, she discovered
that there were many previous
commitments, as she called
everyone she knew. Membership
Co-Chair Susan Froehlich said that
she believes it’s not the amount of
marketing, but how you publicize
it. Susan suggested “one really valuable
item” be offered at the auction
as more of a draw to create greater
interest. John said we will do an
“after-action” review and evaluation
on what improvements can be
made for next year, and asked that
all ideas be sent to him or Tracy.
John said two awards were given
at Founders’ Day. John presented
the Greg Murrell award for Driver
Enthusiasm to former DE chair
Lori Mauthe (in absentia), and
6 December
the Richard F. Selcer Award to
AX/TT chair Travis Howard. We
were all glad to see Robyn Howard
able to join the celebration,
despite her recent neck surgery.
Hoping you heal quickly, Robyn!
Next up was DE Equipment
Manager Luke Edson, who was
present to offer insights and
support, but did not have a
specific report this month.
Then Membership Co-Chairs
Susan and Tom Froehlich were
pleased to report another month’s
gain in new club sign-ups and
renewals, bringing us to yet
another all-time high of 2281
members, including affiliates! They
mentioned that PCA National
is still working on nailing down
the discount-program through
dealerships. Locally, Autobahn
Porsche is taking the lead. John
asked that a follow-up discussion
take place to ensure the program
is effectively positioned and
implemented for the Mavericks.
Social Chair Tracy Robertson
began her full report by mentioning
that we did well with the auction;
one of the main purposes of
the Founders’ Day event is charity.
Having had a great variety of over
100 auction items, we will be able
to remit $3,500 to our club charity
the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House!
Well done everyone! Also, Tracy
created some memento-worthy
Thank You cards that board members
signed to be sent to contributors.
Tracy reminded everyone that
there are Raffle tickets available
for sale for $50 each for the oneyear
lease of the newest Porsche
model, the 2014 Macan. A portion
of the proceeds goes to the Hope
Shelter. The drawing will take place
at the New/All Member Party on
Saturday, January 25 at Hackberry
Creek Country Club in Irving.

on coordinating their functions
for this upcoming year’s Calendar.

Holiday-inspired Porsche pictures
you posted, by the way! Glad I
have a convertible, to make the
Christmas tree transport, not
just less scratch-at-risk, but more
spectacular. Might very well add
some lights and a big bag of gifts
and make that my Christmas card!
John Hamilton then gave Vice
President Gareth Maurice’s report,
as he was unable to attend.
Insurance is all current, with the
exception of the “Frick’n Toy Run”
Sunday Drive on December 8,
which is also benefiting the Hope
House. This will be secured shortly.
Also, Treasurer Jim Falgout was not
present, but reported to John that
we are in excellent financial shape.
I could not help but think this is
an exciting trajectory continuing
by excellence in responsibility, as it
will help facilitate mobility on how
successfully we have the opportunity
to grow the club in valuable ways.
Our new Driver Education Chair,
Chris Tabor, has jumped in with
both feet and pulled together a pro
forma report on the November 9
one-day DE event, which will be the
last one of the season. Participation
remains strong, with 95 confirmed
(at this writing) and 118 registered.
Chris continued by saying that he is
working on 2014 dates and will get
with Travis Howard to ensure no
Autocross or Time Trial conflicts.
Chris is proposing eight DEs, up
from six this year, as demand is
increasing; three would be oneday
events, with a new option for

instructed students (Green and
non-solo Blue groups) to register
for Saturday only. I can hardly wait
for next year! So glad more dates
will be offered. Stay tuned!! Details
TBD. Chris has some additional
proposed changes. For example,
through his interest in designing
a new HPDE logo, he discovered
that there is a national contest;
Chris asked me to submit a design,
and I am honored to be recruited
to help with this opportunity.
Chris then mentioned that we are
in need of new radios, as our communications
systems are crucial to
our safety. In his fiscally responsible
due-diligence, he has three bids
out. Twenty-four to thirty Motorola
CP2s are his preference; they go
for about $200 each plus accoutrements,
although some cost can be
recovered from selling our current
radio gear. He is pulling a formal
proposal together for board review
at the December board meeting.
Chris asked for help from everyone
on his next agenda item; he wants
to create a greater level of support
and camaraderie between the drivers
and the teams. We are glad you
are here, Chris, and look forward
to more great member-benefiting,
goal-accomplishing, servantleadership
from you and all who
get to help with contributing to
actualizing that vision for our club.
Sunday Drive Tourmeister John
Harvey expressed how much he
was looking forward to the Fort
Richardson Drive on November
17, as he will be sporting period
attire (looking forward to the
photo op on that event!). He and
his team finished mapping the
route for the aforementioned
Toy Run on December 8 as well.
We will have the opportunity to
give $25 gift cards, in addition to
bringing an unwrapped toy. Please
check the Calendar for details.
Prospective Rally Co-Chair Don
Sebert is working on developing a
Rally group, and plans to meet with
former Rally Chair Carey Spreen
as well as George Luxbacher and
Tracy Robertson, both of whom
also have expressed interest in
reviving Rallying in our region.
My Secretary report was next:

was able to be at Founders’ Day!
We had a great time. I noted that
By-law change/update proposals
will be ready at the December
meeting; I mentioned my offer
to help with the DE group, developing
Sunday Drive visibility/
interest/participation, and gave
congratulations in welcoming
our 2014 Secretary, Wendy Shoffit.

folks who have stepped up and really
enjoy helping lead the drive groups,
which we have re-sized from about
15 down to 10 or under. The San
Martiño Drive on some spirited outer
routes was a blast! It was at this point
that John Hamilton recommended
an excellent book called The Goal,
which is about process management.
I plan to read that, and will come back with applicable,
executable highlights! Thank you, John!
Time Trial and Autocross Czar Travis Howard gave
his report next and said that the MSR Time Trial filled
up at 48 drivers. Also, that the annual Zims Swap Meet
had low attendance because of forecasted rain. The
November 17 Autocross will be in Mineral Wells, as
will the final Time Trial weekend, December 7-8.
Club Registrar Wendy Shoffit said that the October
Club Race went well, but that attendance
was lower because of possible schedule conflicts.
Also, she heard some complaints about suboptimal
track surface quality.
Award-winning Slipstream Editor
Carey Spreen noted that several members
received their October issues
later than usual. Our mailer followed
up with the USPS and received an
apology from them, but they insist
that they have up to nine days to deliver
second class mail, which is how
Slipstream is delivered. Our regrets
also go out to anyone who received
their October issue later than usual.

Five Speed Chatter: 21st Century Tool Kit

Times are a
changing.
Our cars
are becoming
more complex
with the release of
each new model
year. It is a “no
brainer” to stick to the warranties
provided on our newly purchased
vehicles, but what about when
the warranty expires? What about
the brutal repair costs at import
shops? For those of you who find
yourselves in this situation, or for
those who enjoy tinkering under
the hood, I have compiled a list of
basic tools you will need to service
your car. The tools listed will not
only help in the garage, but will be
very useful out on the open road.
Right off the line, most of our cars
came with some sort of factory tool
kit, although the older Porsches or
restored ones rarely have this tool
kit intact. Purchasing an authentic
numbers-matching tool kit for
your car can get expensive, and
more than likely you won’t need
everything that comes with it. So
what do you need? To answer this
puzzling question, let’s look at what
Zuffenhausen sent over with our
cars and then add on from there.
Typically an early 911 kit came
with the bare essentials an owner
would need to perform basic
maintenance on the vehicle: a
spark plug wrench, a Tommy
bar for that wrench, a 19mm lug
wrench, a red-handled combo
screwdriver set, a set of open-ended
wrenches ranging from 8mm to
17mm, a 10mm Allen wrench, a
fan belt wrench with fan belt, a tow
hook, and a set of pliers. Early 914s

had these items plus a tool, code
P208, which was the wrench used
to hold the engine pulley in place.
As model years became newer
and mechanically more complex,
the tool kits did the opposite and
got smaller. With all the “bells and
whistles” that came with a standard
997, the only thing Porsche wanted
the home mechanic to mess around

only a screwdriver or a few select
wrenches. All of the special tools
your car needed, though you could
find them online, were swiftly
stowed away at the dealerships
and special maintenance shops.
My tool kit requires a little more
than just wrenches and screwdrivers,
because I have been known to
break down on the side of the open
road, often! Along with everything
that came in the original tool kit,
I have an extra set of spark plugs,
a small screwdriver set (for those
hard-to-reach places), a wire crimping
set with a box of connectors and
female ends, a socket wrench with
10mm, 13mm, 15mm, and 17mm
sockets, and a tire iron. Extra items
I have acquired, as needed, include
a magnetic flashlight (for light,
and those pesky washers), electrical
tape, zip ties (though I don’t condone
the use of them as a permanent
fix), a tube of grease, a quart

of 20W-50 non-synthetic oil, and
a first aid kit. For my water-cooled
Porsche, I carry all this and a bottle
of quick-seal head gasket repair --
again just in case. I know, it’s a long
list, but with the right sized bag,
you can fit it all, and still make the
interior space of the trunk look big
enough to fit a full set of golf clubs.
Another item that I don’t necessarily
take out with me daily, but
that I do use while working on my
cars, is my Kindle Fire. Surprisingly,
the tablet, whether you
prefer Apple, Google, or Amazon,
has snuck its way into the garage
of many mechanics. Having the
device nearby lets me easily look up
problems, questions, and technical
articles found on the various
internet forums and websites. This
not only saves paper, but means
that I can connect with millions
of people, and can troubleshoot
the exact issues my cars are facing
with the touch of a finger, in real
time! There are even downloadable
software programs (for example,
one known as Porsche Pet) that tear
apart every aspect of your vehicle;
giving you dimensions, sizes, and
even the part numbers of everything,
all the way down to the individual
nuts and bolts of the engine.

Founders’ Day 2013: A Night at the NYLO

annual banquet
was a return to
our more typical
end-of-the-year
celebration
after last year’s 50th Anniversary
blowout at Texas Motor Speedway.
But it was no less enjoyable! This
year, Founders’ Day was held at
the NYLO Hotel in Las Colinas.
I personally had never heard of
the NYLO Hotel franchise (yeah,
I need to get out more), and
was pleasantly surprised by its
distinctly non-traditional take on
how a hotel should look and feel.
It was an excellent location for
Founders’ Day 2013. Credit goes
to Maverick Region Social Chair
Tracy Robertson and her team for
choosing this venue, which, among
other things, offered free coned-off
parking for our prized vehicles.

Maverick Region Club Race: Texas Showdown at Eagles Canyon

In 1994, Maverick
Region
hosted its first
Club Race event at
the Hallett Motor
Racing Circuit in
Hallett, Oklahoma.
It wasn’t until
2001 that we had
our own track locally to have a race.
That was when Texas Motor Speedway
came along with their road
course, utilizing most of the oval as
well. We held the event there for
four years until MotorSport Ranch
came along, which proved to be a
safer and more interesting track
for drivers. Then, it became really
exciting when Eagles Canyon Raceway
opened in 2007 and gave us a
new sandbox to play in for 2008.
We stayed there for a few years and
then flipped back and forth to MotorSport
Ranch. It’s been great to
have a choice of venues to entertain
racers from around the country.
This year’s event was at Eagles
Canyon on October 26-27. Despite
some grumbling about track
bumpiness, we had nearly 50 racers
in attendance from as far as Kansas,
Colorado, and Las Vegas, Nevada!
They all came to compete in one of
the last races of the year for points.

races and assign national winners.
In 2012 we had four Mavericks win
national championships (out of
39 classes) and a total of 9 podium
finishers. Not too shabby! Go Mavs!
It was a soggy Saturday start
but the weather improved
as the weekend went on
In addition to the Club Race, we
had a solo-only Drivers’ Education
event with just over 50 participants.
Everyone seemed to have a great
time and enjoyed tons of driving
time. The weather cooperated
with us for the most part, with
only a few sprinkles on Saturday.
Temperatures were near perfect,
which our German cars absolutely
loved! Everyone behaved themselves
and we only had a very few
incidents on track. Some people,
who will remain nameless, tried
to help the track by mowing some
of the tall grass, but we assured
them it wasn’t necessary. Others
thought the track could use some
extra oil, but again . . . no need! It
had plenty, thank you. Generally,
though, it was just great racing
in a very gentlemanly sport.

podium finishes nationally for
2013, including four class winners!
The Gearhead Award is presented
to someone faced with adversity,
such as major mechanical failure,
and persevered through it. This
year it was awarded to a reportedly

Touring the Texas Hill Country: Boxstoberfest 2013

This was my first year at
Boxstoberfest and it had
me regretting not having
attended until now. Fredericksburg
is quite a unique town, and even
without the Porsche weekend,
is worth the trip down there.
For me, the big draw was the National
Museum of the Pacific War. The entrance to the
museum is through the former Nimitz Hotel, named
All lined up at the Hangar Hotel
after Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was actually
born in Fredericksburg in 1885, and who, of course,
became the Fleet Admiral of the Pacific in World
War II. By the end of the war, the US had the largest
and greatest Navy that the world had ever seen.
The Harveys, Froehlichs, and
Bischoffs head for the hills.
On to the drive. We had over a hundred Porsches
on the Saturday drive, which began at 10am. We
were split into small groups to keep the number of
cars manageable. The tour was over 200 miles long
and took us over some amazing Texas Hill Country
roads. It was very weird to be zooming by cattle that
were grazing just a few feet from the edge of the road,
completely unconcerned by the rush of Porsches going
past them. We crossed over various grates that I was
told later kept the cattle from roaming into the next
pasture. Halfway through the drive, on the Twisted
Sisters, we stopped and had a good BBQ lunch.
The banquet that night was at the Hangar Hotel. I
felt like I had returned back in time to the 1940s and
been transported to Hawaii. They invited everyone to

given out, we had a surprise marriage proposal, with
the lady accepting, which led to a lot of applause.
The great thing about Boxstoberfest is not only
driving our cars but the opportunity to meet new
people and share our love for the Porsche marque.

A Note from Tourmeister
John Harvey
This is B.J.’s and my sixth year
to be involved with Boxstoberfest,
and we look forward to reuniting
with our friends from past
events as well as meeting new,
first-time participants. This year
was exceptional. We had 213 registrants
and 118 cars gathered
for a fun filled weekend.
As one of four route leaders
for the regular drive, I assembled
my group of 50 participants and,
as I do with each Sunday Drive,
recognized the “Newbies” to the
event. One couple stood out in
particular. Suravee Suthikulpanit
and his wife were there for their
very first Boxstoberfest, and as I
found out, first ever organized
drive and first ever PCA event.
The Suthikulpanits and the
Harveys enjoy a lunch
stop in Leakey.
I asked how they learned about
Boxstoberfest and they replied “it
came with the car”.
Now they really had me going. It
turns out that the previous owner
had registered for Boxstoberfest,
and since he sold the car to
Suravee, he had nothing to drive
to Boxstoberfest, so he included
his registration in the deal!
“OK” I said “so, how long have you
had your Boxster?” They replied
“since yesterday afternoon”. I
tucked them in towards the front
of my run group and they had an
absolute blast.
Lesson to be learned: anyone
who has owned their Porsche for
over 24 hours before one of our
Sunday Drive Tours and is concerned
as to whether they will be
able to keep up and not get lost
has nothing to worry about. The
first chance you get, come out
and join the fun!

Tech Corner: To Be (Blue) or Not to Be (Blue)

Super Blue brake fluid from my
supplier and was told that our
beloved DOT, the U.S. Department
of Transportation, has decided
that all brake fluid used, sold, or
produced in the U.S. MUST be
amber in color. I ranted on the club
Facebook page about my discovery.
Once upon a time, all German cars
came with blue brake fluid. Not
sure of the brand of the fluid, but
it allowed technicians to determine
if the fluid had ever been changed
or flushed. If it was still blue,
even though it turns darker with

coolant under the name “Dexcool”.
Automatic transmission fluid is
red in color. Windshield washer
fluid is blue. There must be
a lot of confusion among the
general public about what fluid
goes where. Chemical companies
complicate everyone’s life by
dying fluids the wrong color.
“Lubrication Engineers” in Fort
Worth has a line of engine oil
that is dyed red and looks just like
auto transmission fluid. “Brad
Penn” makes green engine oil
that looks just like “Swepco” gear
oil. “Royal Purple” is a purpledyed
engine oil that looks like
DOT-5 silicone brake fluid.
There is no rhyme or reason for
any particular color to be assigned
to any type of fluid. My guess is that
the DOT is trying to address the
issue of vastly different products
all being the same color. Not sure
if forcing all of the fluids to be
amber instead of blue is any better.
When a customer used to bring a
car in for repair of a fluid leak, we
used to ask what was the color of
the fluid on their garage floor. No
one asks that question now. In spite
of our Government denying me the
right to buy Super Blue brake fluid,
I can find solace in the fact that
ATE 200 is the same premium
grade DOT-4 brake fluid as Super
Blue, just without the dye.
