Tire Rack Street Survival: Performance Drivers’ Ed for Teens By Gareth Maurice, Region Vice President Photos by the Author Over 200,000 kids are hurt in car accidents each year, and more than 5,000 of them will be killed. There is a good chance one or the other will happen to someone we know. Accidents can become mere incidents if those involved are educated on what to do. Recently PCA became involved with the Tire Rack Street Survival program for teenagers. Aligning themselves with Michelin, other sponsors, and local volunteers, the program educates teens aged 15-21 on how to handle their vehicle during emergency situations. Wanting to learn more, I reached out to PCA National and the local BMW Car Club of America. My goal was to learn about the program and how to host one of our own, so Bruce McQuaid and I attended the event in Mesquite on Sunday, September 28. What a truly fantastic group of people, who are all donating the day in order to help teenagers become better drivers. The day begins with a classroom session explaining what to expect, followed by hours behind the wheel of THEIR car with an instructor by their side. The kids learn what it feels like to control a slide on the watered down skid-pad! They learn emergency lane change maneuvers at speed, as well as when and when not to brake! The slalom course is always a favorite as they learn about weight transfer and how to safely pilot the huge 4,000- to 5,000-pound weapons under their control. Teens are funny. I think they all believed they knew how to drive before the day started. I mean, they have a license, right? My daughter was no different. She attended this course in 2013 when it was put on by the local BMW CCA in Fort Worth. The morning started as, “Why do I have to go to this?” and ended with, “Is there a second day?” I know she is now a better driver as a result, and told me over dinner one night how she actually had to use the emergency lane change maneuver one day. She was proud and is now confident in her abilities. With this in mind, our local Maverick Region is interested is hosting an event or two in 2015, and you will be hearing more about the specific events as they approach. The success of the class is determined by the volunteers. Getting the kids to attend is easy.
