7. Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank<strong>in</strong>g Corporation, Specimen $100, 1 st Jan. 1921,<br />
perforated, red SPECIMEN overpr<strong>in</strong>t, good extremely f<strong>in</strong>e, attractive and extremely rare.<br />
*The <strong>in</strong>spiration for the bank came from Thomas Sutherland, a Scot, who was work<strong>in</strong>g for the Pen<strong>in</strong>sula<br />
and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. He recognized the need for a commercial bank <strong>in</strong> Asia. The<br />
Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank<strong>in</strong>g Corporation Ltd opened <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong on 3 rd March 1865 and <strong>in</strong><br />
Shanghai one month later. It was the first locally owned and locally managed bank. Trade featured<br />
strongly <strong>in</strong> the bank’s operations; bullion, exchange, merchant bank<strong>in</strong>g and note issue. In 1874 the bank<br />
handled Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s first public loan and all the others thereafter.<br />
