63. Imperial British East Africa Company Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Founders Share Certificate, 1890,<br />

*Set up by Royal Charter <strong>in</strong> 1888 to adm<strong>in</strong>istrate the British East African territories follow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

“Scramble for Africa” Conference represented by the Berl<strong>in</strong> Treaty of 1885. The Company was based at<br />

Mombasa and adm<strong>in</strong>istered the coastal strip and Uganda. Generally it was <strong>in</strong>effective <strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the territories assigned and was absorbed <strong>in</strong>to the Foreign Office <strong>in</strong> 1895. It did, however, survey the<br />

railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria as well as the road. An <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g document from the British<br />

Empire.<br />
