55. Silver Medal Commemorat<strong>in</strong>g the First Major U-Boat Action <strong>in</strong> the World, attractive<br />
medal with Capta<strong>in</strong> Otto Weddigen and s<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g British ship portrayed, 1914, 35mm,<br />
attractive and scarce, sold with support<strong>in</strong>g books and contemporary illustration of the action.<br />
*Capta<strong>in</strong> Weddigen set off on the first ever submar<strong>in</strong>e patrol leav<strong>in</strong>g Heligoland <strong>in</strong> August 1914 with<br />
the express purpose of s<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g British warships. On 22 nd September U-9, his boat, found and sank three<br />
British armoured cruisers <strong>in</strong> less than an hour with m<strong>in</strong>imal torpedoes. HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy<br />
were sunk <strong>in</strong> quick succession with the loss of 1,459 British sailors. The action rema<strong>in</strong>s one of the most<br />
notable submar<strong>in</strong>e victories of all time.<br />
