An Exact Surveigh of the Streets, Lanes, and Churches follow<strong>in</strong>g the Great Fire of London, 10 th December <strong>1<strong>66</strong>6</strong>, by Order of the Lord Mayor, John Leake, coloured <strong>in</strong> two parts, each 78 x 59cms, mounted on card, very clean and f<strong>in</strong>e, scarce; together with token co<strong>in</strong>s that can be placed on the map: a) William Adley, Bride Lane (Fleet Street), half penny, 1<strong>66</strong>3, very f<strong>in</strong>e. b) The Seven Stars, Cornhill, farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1648, very f<strong>in</strong>e. c) Will Hearne at Y Whit (the Bear), Bride Lane (Fleet Street), farth<strong>in</strong>g, f<strong>in</strong>e. d) Boars Head Tavern, Gt. Eastcheap, farth<strong>in</strong>g, f<strong>in</strong>e. Shakespeare, Burbage and Ben Jonson are all supposed to have frequented this tavern. It was totally destroyed <strong>in</strong> the Great Fire and subsequently rebuilt <strong>in</strong> 1<strong>66</strong>8. e) Edward Harris, Drury Lane, half penny, <strong>1<strong>66</strong>6</strong>, about very f<strong>in</strong>e. f) Anthony Clarke at Ye (Horseshoe Inn), Drury Lane, half penny, <strong>1<strong>66</strong>6</strong>, very f<strong>in</strong>e. g) Rose Tavern, Fleet Street, farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1649, very f<strong>in</strong>e. h) Robert Thody, Holborn, half penny, 1<strong>66</strong>7, f<strong>in</strong>e. i) Thomas Chapman, Bloomsbury, half penny, 1<strong>66</strong>4, very f<strong>in</strong>e. j) Blake Boy, Cheapside, farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1652, f<strong>in</strong>e. k) Jonathan Redock, Sharp’s Alley (Cow Cross), farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1<strong>66</strong>3, about very f<strong>in</strong>e. l) John Hall, New Exchange (Strand), farth<strong>in</strong>g, very f<strong>in</strong>e. m) Black Bell, Themes Street, farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1652, f<strong>in</strong>e. n) The Ship Without, Temple Bar, farth<strong>in</strong>g, 1649, f<strong>in</strong>e. The Ship Inn near Temple Bar goes back to the 1570s and was <strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous use until reign of Queen Anne. o) The K<strong>in</strong>gs Tavern, Chancery Lane, farth<strong>in</strong>g, f<strong>in</strong>e. The K<strong>in</strong>g’s Head Tavern, its sign as on the token a bust of Henry VIII was the house of John Oldcastle, Baron Cobham (Shakespeare’s Sir John Falstaff). The Popish Plot was launched from here. The build<strong>in</strong>g was pulled down <strong>in</strong> 1799. *This beautiful survey is reduced and engraved by Vertue <strong>in</strong> 1723 for the Society of Antiquaries. It is a derivative of Leake’s 1<strong>66</strong>7 map of London after the Fire. The accompany<strong>in</strong>g tokens can be placed on the streets as they are contemporary. Tokens issued <strong>in</strong> the 17 th century were struck to provide sufficient small denom<strong>in</strong>ation co<strong>in</strong>age as Parliament cont<strong>in</strong>ually failed to do so. Struck <strong>in</strong> copper or brass, often poorly and crudely they provide a wonderful social history of London at this time.
