25. Early Railway Shareholders Silver Pass, engraved by Wyon, 1840, 50mm, Newcastle
Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway, issued to the Company Secretary John Adamson, extremely
fine, boxed, very rare.
*Adamson was typical of his class; an author, amateur antiquarian, coin collector, shell and fossil
collector. The Newcastle Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway was one of the earliest in the UK, being
formed in 1825 to link Newcastle and Carlisle for transporting minerals. The first passengers were carried
in 1835.
26. Duke of Bedford’s Estate, Silver and Copper Passes (2), c. 1790s, 30mm, numbered and
issued for entrance to the Duke of Bedford’s Estate, both used but otherwise very fine and
unusual.
*The Bloomsbury Estate, in which Spink has its premises, came into the Russell family in 1669.
The passes, silver for friends, copper for tenants, allowed visitors to use the private road on the Duke of
Bedford’s Estate.
