25. Early Railway Shareholders Silver Pass, engraved by Wyon, 1840, 50mm, Newcastle<br />
Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway, issued to the Company Secretary John Adamson, extremely<br />
f<strong>in</strong>e, boxed, very rare.<br />
*Adamson was typical of his class; an author, amateur antiquarian, co<strong>in</strong> collector, shell and fossil<br />
collector. The Newcastle Upon Tyne and Carlisle Railway was one of the earliest <strong>in</strong> the UK, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
formed <strong>in</strong> 1825 to l<strong>in</strong>k Newcastle and Carlisle for transport<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>erals. The first passengers were carried<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1835.<br />
26. Duke of Bedford’s Estate, Silver and Copper Passes (2), c. 1790s, 30mm, numbered and<br />
issued for entrance to the Duke of Bedford’s Estate, both used but otherwise very f<strong>in</strong>e and<br />
unusual.<br />
*The Bloomsbury Estate, <strong>in</strong> which Sp<strong>in</strong>k has its premises, came <strong>in</strong>to the Russell family <strong>in</strong> 1<strong>66</strong>9.<br />
The passes, silver for friends, copper for tenants, allowed visitors to use the private road on the Duke of<br />
Bedford’s Estate.<br />
