JEWISH FEDERATION January 2017 Federation Star Jewish Community Relations Council update By Betty Schwartz, Chair The Jewish Community Relations Council was formed in order to further our mission of strengthening ties to our community. Our Black Community Outreach Committee is dedicated to increasing our efforts this year. The chair of this subcommittee is Goldye Meyer, and she is perfect for this leadership role. She is an experienced mediator who is enthusiastic about helping us make progress with our cooperative activities with the Black community. Meetings with Collier County NAACP representatives have been very positive, and we look forward to a rewarding relationship. This year, we will again participate in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade on Monday, January 16. The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and will begin on Broad Avenue, proceed north on 3 rd Street South, then right on 5 th Avenue South, and end on 8 th Street South. The Jewish Federation of Collier County has a terrific banner which we will carry, and we hope to have a larger contingent than last year. We invite you to join us for fresh air, fun and a show of support. The parade will last about an hour, followed by a celebration. On Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m., a Criminal Justice Reform Forum will be held at the Universalist Unitarian Congregation, 6340 Napa Woods Way. The JCRC will be a cosponsor of this non-partisan panel discussion. The panelists include Deborrah Brodsky of Florida State University; Adam Bates, J.D. of the Cato Institute’s Project on Criminal Justice; Raymer Maguire, Director of Criminal Justice Reform of the Florida ACLU; and moderator Reverend Allison DeFoor. Reverend DeFoor is the former Sheriff of Madison County, attorney, former judge, former candidate for Lt. Governor of Florida, an official in the Episcopal Church of Florida, and mentor to prisoners in Florida prisons. Mass incarceration and other issues related to racial equality need to be addressed on local, state and federal levels. The Jewish community has a history dating back to the early 1930s of fighting for racial equality and civil rights. More than 50 years later, there is still work to be done. The statistics of imprisonment are alarming, and the whole community needs to find a solution.
