2A Federation Star January 2017 Renee’s community program & events corner Renee’ Bialek Community Program Coordinator Please join us on Sunday, January 8 for an enlightening movie about Israel. Mr. Gabriel Baredes, Director of Hispanic and Interfaith Affairs, will be speaking at this event. Please see the advertisement in this issue on how to make a reservation. On Monday, January 16 we need walkers for the MLK Jr. parade. Please join us in this parade starting at 10:00 a.m. and help us out at our booth from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. If you can’t volunteer, then please stop by our booth and say hello. This event is free. Please email me at rbialek@jewishnaples.org to let me know you can join us. If you are unable to attend, let me know so that your seat can be given to someone else. Tickets will be mailed in early February. Deadline for Youth Leadership Award application extended Application deadline is now Monday, January 9 The Jewish Federation of Collier County Youth Leadership Awards will be given to honor the achievements of Greater Collier County high school seniors demonstrating leadership in their activities at their respective congregation and/or BBYO youth group. They will be recognized for their successful balancing of Jewish leadership, high school academics, athletics and clubs, and community service. A one-time award of $2,000 each will be given to two deserving seniors. This scholarship will be used to further their education at an accredited college, university or vocational school. Applicant qualifications: Jewish youth in their senior year of high school Residents of the Greater Collier County Area (Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero) Actively involved in respective congregation and/or BBYO youth group Strong academic record Leadership in both high school and Jewish related activities Application forms may be picked up at the Federation office or downloaded at www.jewishnaples.org/scholarships. All scholarship application data is strictly confidential and will be reviewed without any identifying information using established selection criteria. All applications are due by Monday, January 9. The award recipients will be notified by February 1, 2017. Both award recipients will be required to be present at the annual Power of Community Celebration dinner on Saturday, February 11 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. Senior Housing Solutions presents the Alvin Becker Federation Board Chair JEWISH FEDERATION Here’s a resolution you can make…and keep A number of local organizations promote Jewish continuity by providing a Jewish education and experience for our young people. Other groups seek to keep Israel safe, strong and prosperous. Still others support Jewish practices and perspectives that enrich our lives and draw us closer to family, friends and community. Other organizations seek to support the most vulnerable people in our community – children and the aged and those suffering humanitarian emergencies. Finally, some promote advocacy to ensure that our voices are a prominent force in policy decisions. But ONLY the Jewish Federation of Collier County includes ALL of these priorities in its work as an important force in our community – creating, building, supporting and strengthening much needed groups here and abroad. On page 15B in this issue is a list of those organizations and programs that were supported, in part or in whole, by Federation dollars last year. I am confident that you will find one or more groups or programs that strike a responsive chord in your supportive thoughts. Note that the list is long, but so are the needs – and those needs are immediate and continue to grow. Don’t wait to make a contribution to the Jewish Federation of Collier County until later in 2017. The beginning of the year is a wonderful time to be part of a caring community that gives back. Donate now. Volunteer now. Resolve to make a difference now. You’ll have the whole year to feel good about what you’ve done. Happy New Year! Cardozo Legal Society The Cardozo Legal Society is off to a great new start. We had a great showing at the November Cardozo Torah Study led by Rabbi Fishel Zaklos, and the December Meet and Greet at Paradise Wine. Cardozo Torah Study Our second Cardozo Torah Study meeting will be held on Thursday, January 19 at noon at Porter Wright offices in Mercato. Again, we will ask that each participant bring $10 for lunch. A kosher dairy lunch will be brought by Rabbi Fishel. RSVP by January 12 to Joshua Bialek at jbialek@porterwright.com. Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event Author Scott Turow will be speaking at Temple Shalom on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. This is a Jewish Federation of Collier County event. JEWISH FEDERATION January 2017 Federation Star An up-close and personal interview with Tovah Feldshuh Six-time Tony & Emmy-nominated Tovah Feldshuh will be performing her concert, Tovah: Out of Her Mind!, at the Power of Community Celebration on Saturday, February 11 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. I have had the honor of doing fundraising for Jewish charities here and abroad for 40 years. I was asked to become part of the Professional Speakers Bureau for the UJA many years ago, and now I also fundraise for international charities such as Seeds of Peace. The show I will be performing in Naples, Tovah: Out of Her Mind!, was created for just this kind of event, where funds are being raised to support missing” – at prep school, then Harvard and then Harvard Law School. But on February 16, 1976, he came backstage after he saw a matinee of Yentl, and he took my breath away. One year later, we were married, and that’s 40 years ago. Visiting his family totally felt like a warm bath. He was a young man with whom I had “cellular coincidence.” His mother was a pianist, my mother was a pianist and I was a pianist – so Andy and I happened to be brought up with the same music. How effortlessly wonderful. My father went to Harvard, Andrew’s father went to Harvard and so did Andy, and all three were lawyers. We were blessed with a lot of common ground, which has made our long-lasting relationship flow. Has there been someone in theatre that you admire as a role model? Uta Hagen, my superb first professional acting life, I believe I have the knowledge and wisdom to be very respectful of nature. I am very alert, and I listen to what the ocean in which I swim or the hills on which I ski are telling me. I am very respectful of nature. I am not a literal believer in G-d, but I love nature and feel the presence of forces stronger than myself. I know you are very proud of your children. Yes, I am a very satisfied mother. I have a married daughter and a son. How will you be as a grandmother? I will be the grandmother who will be able to take her grandchildren to the soccer field, train them to ride a horse, teach them to fully participate in their beautiful lives and show them the value of DEAR time: Drop Everything And Read! I imagine I will not be baking cookies for my grandchildren. I do not believe in sugar. When I have sugar, my the community. Given that you Tovah Feldshuh are riding your bike on your way to the swimming pool in Manhattan as we speak, are you always so high energy? You have been described as “indefatigable.” Does this apply to every aspect of your life? Well, I believe in LWL – “live while living.” The truth is, we never know when this journey is going to end, so I say live every day to its fullest. You have had some exciting adventures over and above your theatrical career. Recently, you climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ice Glaciers in Iceland, and Wayna Picchu to look down upon the spectacular ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, among others. What’s next? I want to see as much of the world as I can before I leave this earth, and I want to see it while I still have my athletic faculties and mental acuity. I hope to live to 104. My mother lived until over 103, and walked until the end – no wheelchair. I want to take advantage of my time on this earth, so my current bucket list is Mongolia and Siberia in one trip, and then Borneo and New Guinea in another. Can you describe yourself in one sentence? I continue to follow the advice of my grandmother Ada. To reach for the stars, for if you reach for the stars, you may land on the roof. Reach for the roof, you never get off the ground. What or who have been the strongest influences in your life choices? I would say my parents. My father Sidney taught me the value of courage and fortitude. Dad was an avid horseman and trained me to ride. One summer as we were leaving the stable, my horse bucked me (and my white summer hacking jacket) into a pile of horse manure. My father yelled to me, “Terri Sue, Terri Sue (my birth name), are you alright?” I said “Yes, Daddy but I’m covered in horse $&!#.” Dad replied, “Everybody is, get back on your horse.” That wise answer has stayed with me all my life. My mother was an incredibly wise and practical woman. She showed me through her example what it means to have good common sense. She used to say, “If you are serious about a man, run, don’t walk to his house to meet his parents. If it doesn’t feel like a warm bath, it’s a red flag.” Fortunately, I knew my husband’s family since I was 13 and a classical pianist at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Andy’s teacher was a beacon in my life. I never saw her tear apart or even criticize a student. Rather, she would redirect them. Uta taught me not only how to act, but how to teach. I coached soccer for five years as my father and brother did before me. I try never to criticize the player but rather to redirect them. To me, blame is the lowest form of consciousness. I sometimes teach “The Actor’s Approach to a Song” at Yale and I always redirect and refocus my students when needed. If something goes awry, I say, “That’s an interesting choice. Can we also try this now?” You have played so many women. Is there one character that is your favorite? Each role is like a different child. I love them all, and playing them affords me the opportunity to do what I was meant to do in this life. Like any artist, some roles I have played have been more successful than others, but each was an enriching experience. I have been fortunate to continue to work in film, television and on stage. I have played roles from Juliet, to Golda Meir to three Queens of Henry VIII. I have several one-woman shows which I continue to develop and perform. These shows give me great artistic freedom. I am currently working on a new act called Aging is Optional: ’cause God I Hope it is!. I do believe that aging is optional and there are ways to remain young long past your prime. I still want to stay in the artistic arena, and explore male as well as female parts in this age of gender bending. My brother, Dr. David Feldshuh, has written a new play in which I would play a man, a boxing manager of the great German prize fighter, Max Schmeling. Collaborating with my brother to make this part sing would be a joy. Your character on The Walking Dead, Deanna Monroe, has died. How did you react? Everyone comes on The Walking Dead to die. That is the nature of the show from your first day on the set. For me, finishing this part was difficult. No one wants to lose a great job. My death on screen compelled me to explore what it really means to die, what it feels like to be dying, and how the body knows when it’s time. The Walking Dead was a joy to be part of. Are you still filming Crazy Ex- Girlfriend? Yes. I am doing the season finale this week. It is a joyous, crazy role and I get to sing and dance, which is lots of fun. I love doing it and it’s a wonderful piece. 3A joints hurt. I feel the United States is a pre-diabetic population and suffers from an obsession with food. I am definitely a foodie, addicted to the pleasure of eating, which is why it’s so important that I keep exercising…not just to stay trim but to stay healthy. They say “a lean horse runs a long race.” You have traveled to so many Jewish communities to perform throughout the world. Have you noticed any similarities? Yes. They are very generous, and the more isolated they are, the more their pocketbooks are open. I love everybody. I hope for Middle East peace. It’s a difficult situation now, but I try my best, one hug at a time, and I won’t give up.
