I
marvel at the fortuitous designation
of January as Florida Jewish History
Month. What a great way to start
each year for us all, isn’t it?!
The Society will begin the year
with its Annual Fundraising Event, the
premier of a new film in its Southwest
Florida Jewish Pioneers Series – “Stuart
Kaye, a Mensch for All Reasons.”
Stuart is a notable Collier County
developer and one of the contemporary
leaders of the Collier County Jewish
community, who has made Naples his
home since 1981. His story is loaded
with Collier County historical tidbits
and is a treasure trove for local history
buffs and sleuths.
Stuart’s journey from his arrival
here just after college is unique for those
who understand that in those long-ago
days of Naples history (1980s!), there
were only a few single young Jewish
men and no single young Jewish women
living in Collier County. To Stuart, who
was raised on Florida’s east coast and
experienced the thriving Jewish life
and culture it offered,
partaking in the creation
and shaping of the
Collier County Jewish
community was a given.
And his accomplishments
are many.
The Jewish Historical
Society of Southwest
Florida strives to
boost the current flow
of information about our
community’s founders and contemporaries.
We hope you will come to enjoy
the film, meet the Kaye family, and
experience the festive surprises the Society
has prepared. The event will take
place on Monday, January 16 at 5:00
p.m. at the Paragon Pavilion Theaters,
833 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples.
Tickets include the movie, a wine &
cheese reception, and optional new
Stuart Kaye
membership or renewal. Donations are
most welcomed and very much appreciated
to enable the Society to further its
mission of Jewish history preservation
in the region. To purchase tickets, please
email office@jhsswf.org or leave a message
at 239.566.1771.
Many interesting and important
Jews relocated or became seasonal
residents of Southwest Florida. Some
of them influenced their contemporaries
through their deeds, legacy, accomplishments,
stories, conversations or just
their very presence in same circles. Jews
of Southwest Florida used to be few, and
everyone knew everyone else even as
recently as just two decades ago.
Request for nominations for 21 st Annual
Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards
The Jewish Museum of Florida-
FIU is seeking nominations for
the 21 st Annual Breaking the
Glass Ceiling Awards to be presented
on Sunday, March 26 in Miami Beach.
From the submissions, the Breaking
the Glass Ceiling Committee will select
four women from around the state
to receive the annual award.
The award was established in 1995
by the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU
(JMOF-FIU) to honor Florida Jewish
professional women who have become
successful pioneers in fields generally
dominated by men. While this is
not an award for community service,
the honorees must have demonstrated
activities in the Jewish and civic community,
and served as role models or
mentors. More than 85 women have
received this prestigious award to date,
including women in medicine, banking,
accounting, academia, politics,
law, aviation, sports, journalism, arts,
entertainment and more.
If you know a woman who qualifies
for this award, please log onto
www.jewishmuseum.com, or contact
Nancy Cohen at 786.972.3164 or nan
cohen@fiu.edu to obtain a nomination
form. Nominations need to submitted
to JMOF-FIU by Friday, January 20 at
5:00 p.m. You may submit
more than one nominee.
Nomination is an honor,
but not a guarantee of final
selection. In order to
receive the award, recipients
must be able to take
part in the Glass Ceiling
Ceremony at JMOF-FIU
on March 26.
To enter a candidate for the Virtual
Museum, please send a one-page summary,
(handwritten is okay) by January
7. Include your contact information.
Winners will be announced on January
16.
The following volunteer opportunities
are still available for the 2017
season: researcher, data entry and correspondence
assistant.
