14A Federation Star January 2017 Astonishing stories now being told Ida Margolis GenShoah President After many sold-out events and programs last season, GenShoah SWFL formed focus groups to do an evaluation and to plan future programs. It was determined that the most popular and significant programs were those that were inspirational or told stories that were unfamiliar. The audiences for GenShoah programs are generally knowledgeable about the history of the Holocaust, are aware of the importance of continuing to tell stories about this unique event, and that there are many stories that are recently coming to light. Screening and presentation “Just when you thought you’d heard every vital story about the Holocaust, along comes the stirring documentary No Asylum: The Untold Chapter of Anne Frank’s Story to shine further light on one of history’s darkest periods,” wrote Gary Goldstein of the LA Times. This award-winning film will be presented at Temple Shalom on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Jonathan Brent, the executive director of New York’s YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, will join us and explain about YIVO and how the cache of letters written in 1941 by Anne Frank’s father, Otto, was recently found there. Brent will also be available for a Q&A. Jewish Book Festival event Two little-known Holocaust stories are told in the books The Nazi Titanic: The Incredible Untold Story of a Doomed Ship in WWII by Robert Watson, and C’est La Vie: An Afternoon in France By Arlene Yedid What would lead a family of six children to flee their home and remain in hiding for four years? The members of the Catholic Gaillet family were forced to leave their comfortable home located in the path of the German invasion of France. They were part of a mass exodus of the French fleeing barbarous Nazi troops grabbing France as their dominion. In 2014, Hélène Gaillet de Neergard wrote a childhood memoir called I Was a War Child. She was only four at the outbreak of the war. Fortunately, her father had kept a diary of their harrowing war years. Her childhood molded her determined personality. She sought and led a golden life with the rich and famous. She was a noted photographer of celebrities Muhammad Ali and David Frost. Hélène captured nighttime New York Hélène Gaillet de Neergard Sam and Rene Geist at Beth Tikvah – Sam facilitated the GenShoah fi lm presentation of The People vs. Fritz Bauer in photographs of Harlem jazz greats. Interestingly, Hélène’s friendship with Jackie and Aristotle Onassis is revealed in their biographies. Hélène, a fascinating speaker, will recount memories of her exciting life at a special event, C’est La Vie: An Afternoon in France, a Temple Shalom Sisterhood benefit. It will be held at the Hilton Naples on Tuesday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. The luncheon features signature French cuisine. Harpist Laura Lou Roth will enhance the afternoon with delicate French music. Evelyn and Arthur’s Promenade store will give an informal look at chic new fashions. Orchestra of Exiles: The Story of Bronislaw Huberman, the Israel Philharmonic, and the One Thousand Jews He Saved from Nazi Horrors by Josh Aronson. Shelley Lieb will lead a discussion of The Nazi Titanic on Wednesday, January 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. Authors Watson and Aronson, who are part of the Collier County Jewish Book Festival, will be speaking on Monday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah, 1459 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. These two stories are more than interesting – they are astonishing. Information about purchasing tickets to Jewish Book Festival events can be found in the four-page pullout section in this issue of the Federation Star. Two guest speakers On Sunday, February 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Holocaust Museum, there will be an opportunity to hear two extraordinary stories from two outstanding COMMUNITY FOCUS speakers. Holocaust survivor Steen Metz will relate his personal story of being transported to TheresienstadtF Concentration Camp. Filmmaker and author Marina Berkovich will tell her story about interviewing a well-known Holocaust denier. What a great way to start each year for us all, isn’t it?! The Society will begin the year with its Annual Fundraising Event, the premier of a new film in its Southwest Florida Jewish Pioneers Series – “Stuart Kaye, a Mensch for All Reasons.” Stuart is a notable Collier County developer and one of the contemporary leaders of the Collier County Jewish community, who has made Naples his home since 1981. His story is loaded with Collier County historical tidbits and is a treasure trove for local history buffs and sleuths. Stuart’s journey from his arrival here just after college is unique for those who understand that in those long-ago days of Naples history (1980s!), there were only a few single young Jewish men and no single young Jewish women living in Collier County. To Stuart, who was raised on Florida’s east coast and experienced the thriving Jewish life and culture it offered, partaking in the creation and shaping of the Collier County Jewish community was a given. And his accomplishments are many. The Jewish Historical Society of Southwest Florida strives to boost the current flow of information about our community’s founders and contemporaries. We hope you will come to enjoy the film, meet the Kaye family, and experience the festive surprises the Society has prepared. The event will take place on Monday, January 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the Paragon Pavilion Theaters, 833 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples. Jews of Southwest Florida used to be few, and everyone knew everyone else even as recently as just two decades ago. Request for nominations for 21 st Annual Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards The Jewish Museum of Florida- FIU is seeking nominations for the 21 st Annual Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards to be presented on Sunday, March 26 in Miami Beach. From the submissions, the Breaking the Glass Ceiling Committee will select four women from around the state to receive the annual award. The award was established in 1995 by the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU (JMOF-FIU) to honor Florida Jewish professional women who have become successful pioneers in fields generally dominated by men. While this is not an award for community service, the honorees must have demonstrated activities in the Jewish and civic community, and served as role models or mentors. More than 85 women have received this prestigious award to date, including women in medicine, banking, accounting, academia, politics, law, aviation, sports, journalism, arts, entertainment and more.
