Community commemorates “Night of Broken Glass”
By Jeff Margolis
It is called Kristallnacht, “The Night
of Broken Glass. On the night of
November 9, 1938, the Nazi leadership
in Germany orchestrated pogroms
in Germany and Austria that led to the
destruction of over 1,000 synagogues
and 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses.
Over 25,000 Jewish men and youths
were arrested and sent to concentration
camps. By most accounts, this event
signaled the beginning of the Holocaust
and the eventual systematic murder of
six million Jews and millions of others
in Europe.
On Sunday, November 13, the
Naples community gathered at Temple
Shalom to commemorate the 78 th Anniversary
of this tragic and horrific
event. The Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of
Collier County, the Diocese of Venice
in Florida, the Holocaust Museum &
Education Center of Southwest Florida,
and the Jewish Community Relations
Council of the Jewish Federation of
Shalom Gardens
at Palm
Royale
Cemetery
Collier County, jointly sponsored the
program.
Holocaust survivors and children
of survivors lit memorial candles, and
prayers were recited for the victims.
The program featured a multi-media
presentation entitled “Shattered and
Broken,” which was prepared by Amy
Snyder, Executive Director of the Holocaust
Museum, and was read by area
school students. Speakers included
Rabbi Adam Miller of Temple Shalom
and the Very Reverend Robert Kantor
of St. Agnes Catholic Church.
