The Saul I. Stern Cultural Series
By Sue R. Baum, President
This series is one of the calling
cards of our synagogue. Established
23 years ago, the series
has made a contribution to the cultural
life of the greater Marco Island community
and beyond. This year, the program
is both informative and musical.
On Saturday, January 21, we will
revisit Fiddler on the Roof, in an interesting
and informative manner by
Ellen Katz, of Baltimore, Maryland, a
presenter of super musicals. A graduate
of the University of Maryland, she is
Co-President
I
just read a letter that National
President Ellen Hershkin sent to
the women of Hadassah. She states
“that now more than ever we need
to take stock and replenish our inner
strengths, because Hadassah needs you
in the days, weeks and months ahead to
work together for women’s health, gender
equity and, most definitely, Israel.”
Since our founding, Hadassah
members have joined together in communities
around the country to achieve
our mission. We do this across lines
of geography, across political aisles,
and across generations – l’dor v’dor.
Together we will build on this legacy.
President-elect Donald Trump
chose to focus on uniting the American
people. Hadassah is looking forward
to working with him and his staff to
strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship,
promote gender equity, and address the
issues important to us as Zionists and
women.
We definitely are not ready to compromise
our rights. Hopefully, he and
leaders around the world will work to
achieve these goals.
On Sunday, January 15, Rev.
Tony Fisher will discuss the
ramifications of the 1993 Religious
Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)
in the light of recent U.S. Supreme
Court decisions and the prospect of the
newly-elected Trump Administration
a teacher and performer. With videos,
a live performance and colorful costumes,
she tells the story of Fiddler’s
creation, the fascinating history of the
unforgettable music. She has received
rave reviews at Chautauqua, Peabody
Institute, FGCU and more.
On Saturday, March 4, we will have
a Chocolate Fantasy. Retired Rabbi
Deborah R. Prinz has spent the last
decade studying the link between Jewish
history and the history of chocolate.
a short “coffee and chat” prior to the
beginning of the program at 2:00 p.m.
The public is invited to attend
this timely program. Reservations are
After a successful 35-year career in
educational publishing, where he served
most recently as CEO for a successful
Boston area development house, Tony
changed course and went back to school
to earn his Masters of Divinity at Andover
Newton Theological School and was
its third printing and will be available
for purchase. She will weave the story
of Jews and chocolate. The recipes in
the book will be offered following the
presentation.
On Saturday, March 18, for the 11 th
season performing at the Cultural Series,
the Naples Philharmonic Brass Quintet
returns with outstanding musicians for
classic and modern music and commentary.
ordained into the Unitarian Universalist
ministry in 2014. A lifelong Unitarian
Universalist, Rev Fisher sees his faith
tradition as living on the boundary
between the sacred and the secular, the
faithful and the skeptic, the believer and
the doubter. Religious freedom is thus
both at the core of this tradition and essential
for its existence.
We cannot assume that the buttresses
of law and precedent will hold
firm. Acts of intolerance have risen since
the election and we can only expect
that well-supported attacks on religious
freedom will continue as well. Issues
of governmental entanglement with
religion have undergone a considerable
shift over the last few decades. The religious
right has created a new definition
of religious liberty that now includes
the rights of corporations to withhold
birth control in insurance plans and
threatens to discriminate against samesex
couples. And this is just the tip of
an iceberg of demands that also includes
the degradation of science education, the
“war” on Christmas, prayer in school
and much more.
JEWISH WAR VETERANS 239-261-3270
Jewish War Veterans update
By Harve Sturm, Commander Post #202
Wow! November 2016 was an
exciting month packed with
patriotism and politics. On
the political side, the presidential election
was an extraordinary event. We take
no sides, but finally we have a presidentelect
to bring the country together.
On November 11, Veterans Day,
JWV members attended and participated
in several veteran celebrations in Naples
beginning with the Collier County Veterans
Council celebration at Cambier
Park with a presentation of the flags.
The JWV Post 202 flag was presented
with the Naples High School JROTC
Honor Guard.
The Pine Ridge Middle School
Band honored the veterans with patriotic
music throughout the event attended by
veterans, residents and visitors.
Temple Shalom Veterans Shabbat:
JWV members participated in the
service in dress uniform in a Shabbat
service honoring all veterans.
The Palmetto Ridge
High School JROTC presented
the colors, with the
Pledge of Allegiance from
the congregation. During
the service, the chorus sang
patriotic songs beginning
with “America the Beautiful” and the
congregation joined in. The service
concluded with everyone singing “God
Bless America.”
JWV Special Event: Our annual
fundraiser at the Vineyards Country
Club included a buffet breakfast. Guest
speaker Max Rabinovits presented
“The Story of My Life and Music.” He
has spent his life as an internationallyrenowned
violinist, concert master of
the St. Louis and Cincinnati Orchestras,
and the Naples Orchestra and Chorus.
Max’s early studies of the violin began
while he and his family were in hiding
from the Nazis in Belgium.
Max, an amazing storyteller,
shared memories of
his childhood and lifetime
experiences in Europe and
America. He concluded his
visit by honoring us with a
violin concert. The entire
audience sang “God Bless America.”
The day concluded with an outstanding
concert at the Cambier Park band shell
featuring the Naples Concert Band.
Wishing everyone a Happy Chanukah
and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
We stand for Jewish pride, identity
and American military service to our
nation.
