8A Federation Star January 2017 Campaign Chairs and Directors Mission to Paris and Israel, July 2016 – Part 5 Phyllis Seaman Federation Vice Chair Israel’s challenges Our first morning in Israel, we were briefed on challenges facing Israel, with Alon Ben-David, an Israeli news journalist covering major events in Israel for over 30 years. Ben-David is a senior defense correspondent and anchors a television news magazine. He feels postponing Iran’s nuclear deal would have helped Israel since Iran has an eye on the entire Middle East area. Iran, Syria, Libya and Yemen are so divided that they are not recognizable as the countries they were. He feels there are future opportunities with our “frenemies.” Is there a new intifada? 310 terrorists in 10 months, 90 caught alive. Who are they? They all have disappointments Alon Ben-David with Israel. Most of the content of the terrorist information comes from Syria/ ISIS. Isis is appealing to educated Muslims, not only in Israel, but around the world. Parents of young boys say they would like to lock them up. They have lost control. The mothers’ voices are small and they try to work quietly behind the scene. In the prisons, the terrorists are divided up with their own organizations, since they all hate each other. They don’t want a Palestinian state – they want their own rights and rules. Families in the West Bank are divided between Fatah and Hamas. The West Bank population is 2.6 million people. Egypt, says terrorists are digging tunnels at their borders and entering Egypt. Gaza has 1.8 million people. They are starving. Young boys sneak into Israel to get caught and then fed in prison. Some will sneak into Israel with a grenade to ensure being sent to prison, and not to kill anyone. Israel’s reconciliation with Turkey is a great move. Turkey will always hate Israel, but they could work together in the common goal to rid the world of ISIS. They hate Israel, but hate ISIS more. Another frenemy! Israeli hospitals have treated 2,900 Syrians injured during their war and will likely treat many more. There is a shared interest and goal with all the Mediterranean Arab countries to get rid of the extremists. Together they can heal the wounds of this region that is home to all of them. Israel is a home worth fighting for. It wishes the West would wake up to these facts. Our afternoon was going to be spent visiting some programs of our overseas partner agencies. Our 112-person mission was broken up into many smaller groups. My group was off to Bat Yam, outside of Tel Aviv, to visit a Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) program. JDC was established in 1914 to provide assistance to the elderly, families and youth for social problems in partnership with governments around the world. Bat Yam has a large Russian immigrant population. We were visiting with recipients, program directors and social workers in the “Families First Program.” Our meeting was with Sheila and Ivetta, participants and single mothers in this year-old program. Ivetta, 39, has a 6-yearold and 18-month-old. She made aliyah 20 years ago from Russia. Her dream has been to start her own business. She is an artist, and last year she started hand crafting, knitting and crocheting baby things. She is in a course that teaches her how to run and market a business and price products. She also receives parenting program support and psychological support for her 6-year-old son. Ivetta proudly shared that she has also become an assistant, teaching an art course. Sheila, 38, a single mom of children ages 6 and 8, works in customer service. She had to go to the Welfare Department for services and is now taking a course to work in social service for special-needs students. Sheila became so emotional as she told her story and how grateful she is for what she has received, we all wanted to jump up and hug her. She was finishing her studies and had sent resumes to schools for early childhood development. Sheila has gained so much from this program that she is now earning more in her training job than at her customer service job. We also got to hear from the mentors who are volunteers and so selfless and caring. Eliahu, worked in education and is working in this program providing guidance and computer training. He is a special liaison with the Ethiopian community since he speaks their language. Tal was a high-end party planner who wanted to give back and help There are now 70 families in this JEWISH FEDERATION Phyllis, Ivetta, Sheila program in Bat Yam. Family mentors train in teaching how to handle family debt and coping with personal issues. The mentors are volunteers and the programs are in groups or one on one. JDC’s expertise and reputation bring in other partners. The best and most spontaneous part of the program was after we were shown Ivetta’s hand-crocheted “nursing necklace,” a few of us asked if we could buy one. I encouraged more people to do so and she made over $300. As you see, our Federation Mission days are quite long, exceptionally full and very educational. We had dinner and an evening program with Birthright, Masa and Onward Israel participants at Eretz Israel Museum ahead of us. Being with all these young energetic people would certainly get our batteries charged. It definitely makes you feel great about our next generation and the Jewish future. As Jews we have a covenant to take care and save our people around the world. I have witnessed and shared how our dollars nurture and support people. She has also received two Emmy Award nominations for her performance as Helena Slonova in the mini-series Holocaust and for her recurring role as defense attorney Danielle Melnick on Law & Order. In addition, she has appeared in such films as A Walk on the Moon, She’s Funny Th a t W a yand Kissing Jessica Stein. Currently, she portrays Naomi Bunch, an overbearing Jewish mother, on The CW television series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. JEWISH FEDERATION January 2017 Federation Star Documentary film chronicles Israel’s successes By Jeff Margolis Would you like to hear some good news about Israel? The Israel Advocacy Committee of Collier County cordially invites the community to a screening of the film Inside Israel: How a Small Nation Makes a Big Difference on Sunday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah, 1459 Pine Ridge Road. The award-wining documentary, narrated by Harvard University professor Tal Ben Shahar, will look at the inner strength of the 68-year-old nation that has enabled it to overcome many challenges and develop into an agricultural and technological success. Mr. Gabriel Baredes, Director of Hispanic and Interfaith Affairs from the Israel Consul General’s Office in Miami, has been invited to attend and facilitate the post-film discussion. Tickets for this event are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. In an effort to promote Muslim- Jewish dialogue and offer divergent views and opinions, the IAC is pleased to announce a program featuring Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road. Dr. Jasser is the president and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy. He also currently serves as a member of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. In this role, he briefs members of Congress on Homeland Security issues. Dr. Jasser is the author of A Battle for the Soul of Islam: An American Patriot’s Fight to Save His Faith. Tickets for this event are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
