Female Patenting is Very Low. While it is certainly not the only measure of innovation, patenting is
one measure that helps us understand the extent to which women are able to contribute to innovation
in meaningful ways.
As Figure 1.8 illustrates, an NCWIT study of all U.S. invented U.S. information technology patents
found that, depending on the subcategory, male-only teams account for 82-90 percent of all
information technology patents (Ashcraft & Breitzman, 2012). Female-only teams account for
approximately 2 percent while mixed-sex teams count for 8-15 percent. As a result, women are even
more underrepresented in technology patenting than they are in the technology workforce overall.
Importantly, female patenting has increased over time, from 1.7 percent in 1980 to 7.8 percent
in 2010. This is particularly noteworthy because, during the past twenty years, the percentage of
women employed in computing has declined from 32 percent in 1983 to 25 percent in 2009 (with a
high of 36 percent in 1990-1991).
