TAKING AN ECOSYSTEM APPROACH: Overview of the NCWIT Industry Systemic
Change Model
Creating an Ecosystem
To realize the benefits of diverse talent, companies need to employ a multi-pronged approach.
Instituting piecemeal practices may be helpful in some cases but will not result in sustained,
systemic change. Drawing from the latest research, NCWIT Senior Research Scientist Catherine
Ashcraft developed the following model for how companies can effectively address key factors
that affect women’s participation in information technology. The two elements at the center of the
model are vital for the sustained success of all other efforts: 1) establishing top leadership support
and institutional accountability and 2) improving the managerial relationship. Without these
foundational efforts, other reforms are less likely to have the desired impact.
