to the sugar mill where the liquid is extracted. <strong>The</strong> liquid is then poured into vases that are<br />

placed in the sun to dry. <strong>The</strong> illustration depicts the sixteenth-century practice before the<br />

Portuguese innovations that changed the Brazilian sugar industry in the 1610s and 1620s.<br />

mills which became common features <strong>of</strong> Portuguese plantations in Brazil several years<br />
