31 Johan Maurits’s personal negative attitude toward the Jews is suggested in the
anti-Semitic remarks of the former Spanish priest turned Calvinist minister Vicente
Joaquin Soler. See his correspondence edited by B. N. Teensma, Dutch Brazil: Vincent
Joachim Soler’s Seventeen Letters (Rio de Janeiro 1999) 74. Johan Maurits responded to the
intransigence of the Catholic clergy by expelling first the Jesuits and later members of
the other missionary orders. These actions and the hostility of some of the Calvinist
clergy was used by Mário Neme, Fórmulas Políticas no Brasil Holandês (São Paulo 1971)
to question the scope and sincerity of Johan Maurits’s toleration.
