intransigence <strong>of</strong> the Catholic clergy by expelling first the Jesuits and later members <strong>of</strong><br />

the other missionary orders. <strong>The</strong>se actions and the hostility <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the Calvinist<br />

clergy was used by Mário Neme, Fórmulas Políticas no Brasil Holandês (São Paulo 1971)<br />

to question the scope and sincerity <strong>of</strong> Johan Maurits’s toleration.<br />
