PHARMACY IN THE MEDIA IPU Academy Spring Programme The IPU Academy Spring Programme 2017 is now online at www.ipuacademy.ie. As a member of the IPU, you are automatically a member of IPU Academy. This membership benefit entitles you to attend, without charge, live learning events in the IPU Academy Spring Programme. IPU Academy Webinar Series We issued a press release reminding patients to get the flu vaccination following reports that there had been an increase in influenza and influenza-like cases. There was a substantial amount of media coverage on this matter. IPU Executive Committee member Ann Marie Horan was interviewed for UTV Ireland and TV3’s News at 5.30 to highlight that the best way to prevent getting the flu is to get the flu vaccination. There was also coverage in national newspapers, including the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and Irish Examiner, as well as a significant amount of coverage in regional newspapers and online. A number of IPU spokespersons were was also interviewed on regional radio stations including Tipp FM, KFM, KCLR, Northern Sound and Ocean FM. The HSE’s website www.undertheweather. ie, supported by the IPU, was also in the media advising people on how to deal with minor ailments including cold, flu, earache and other common illnesses. There was coverage in the Irish Independent and Kilkenny People and also in regional newspapers. An article was published in the Sunday Independent which looked into the fees that are paid to pharmacists by the HSE. In response, the IPU pointed out that fees paid to pharmacists have significantly reduced in recent years and, with an increase in the level of items dispensed and a reduction in fees, pharmacies are now doing a lot more for less. The IPU Crime Survey, which was carried out at the beginning of January, revealed that crime against pharmacies was at crisis levels. IPU President Daragh Connolly commented on the survey results as “shocking” and he was particularly concerned at the level of violent crimes against pharmacy staff. The survey received a significant amount of media coverage on national and regional levels. Daragh Connolly and Ann Marie Horan were interviewed on RTÉ Radio 1’s The Sean O’Rourke Show and the topic was also covered on RTÉ Radio 1’s 7.00 News. There was also coverage in national newspapers including The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Irish Examiner and Irish Daily Mirror. Daragh was interviewed across numerous regional radio stations and there was also online media coverage in TheJournal.ie and BreakingNews.ie.
