I feel that we here at The Banner are so blessed to
have Brother Melvin Sisson to submit a message to
our paper and to the readers. He sent along a note with
his last submission stating “.. I am thrilled just to be a
small part, we get a lot of calls....”
With our (The Banner’s) humble help, we hope that he
is reaching many, touching many!
Tom
Tyler
Editor
Again from his note - “And we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Rom 8:28
Our thoughts and prayers are with Brother Melvin and his wife Mary as she
has had a second round of Kemo, “Doing Well” he has said in his note.
I understand how cancer can affect a family, and it can be difficult at times.
Thank you Brother Melvin & Sister Mary.
DID YOU KNOW?
During the Dust Bowl, people
sewed clothes out of flour sacks
when money was tight. When
flour distributers heard about
this, they made their bags more
colorful so the subsequent
clothing would be more attractive.
THE GREATEST SIN IN AMERICA TODAY
Luke 17:22-30
INTRODUCTION: Almost every place you travel today you will hear the
statement “I’ll tell you what is wrong with our country.” America with all her
faults is the greatest nation on earth, and I thank God for the privilege of
living in America. I thank God for the freedom of speech. I would like to
exercise this right today by discussing what I believe from the Word of God to
be America’s Greatest Sin.
One of the most unusual things I have ever seen in the scriptures is the cycle
of God. We have all heard the expression history will repeat itself. Whether
we realize it or not there is much truth in such an expression. As the end of
the age draws near many of the unusual things of the Bible will repeat
themselves.
1. The cycle of the Garden of Eden.
2. The cycle of man’s age.
3. The cycle of Noah and Lot.
According to these verses the same characteristics of the people in the days of Noah and Lot will characterize the
people upon the earth when Jesus comes the second time.
What is the greatest sin of America that was also the sin in Noah and Lot’s day?
MATERIALISM.
The doctrine of materialism is that of comfort, pleasure, and wealth.
These are the only or highest goals or values. They are more concerned with material than with spiritual goals or
values.
The problem with America is not an economic problem although America’s problems are the results of an inability
to handle material abundance.
This tells us of our basic problem -that it is a spiritual problem.
America like so many other nations in history has fallen victim to the Peril of
Prosperity.
I. MATERIALISM BRINGS THE SIN OF SELF GRATIFICATION - PLEASURE
A. Americans like those of Noah’s day are addicted to pleasure.
1. Americans spend $83 billion a year for leisure activities. Of this amount, “it is estimated that over $38
billion will be spent this year on recreational equipment and leisure-time pursuits other than travel”.
2. Americans will spend another $35 billion on vacations and travel within the U.S. Foreign travel chalks up
an additional $5 billion. Rome lost her soul in a saturnalia of “wine, women, and song”. America is doing
the same.
B. In Noah’s day they had no thought of God, the Bible, Church, heaven, hell, or their own soul. The need in
these latter days is a consciousness of God (Gal. 5:19-21 ).
C. There are the signs of the last days in our text verses.
(i) American culture has followed the rest of the world in turning their back on
God “Because that, when they knew God, (or knew about God) they glorified
him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.” (Rom. 1:21).
(ii) America has scoffed at God’s righteousness, rejected His-statutes and ridiculed and persecuted His
people. “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts”. (2 Peter
3:3).
(iii) America has become “lovers of their own selves” (2 Tim. 3: 1-4).
a. This is seen in the form of broken marriages, separated families, crime,
corruption, hatred, violence, sexual perversions, mass murders, and
suicides.
b. This is reflected in our mission giving vs. monies spent on chewing gum
and cat and dog food. “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the
Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” (Prov. 19:17).
“Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself,
but shall not be heard”. (Prov. 21 :13).
c. This generation knows everything about life except how to live it.

SUDOKU
The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into
nine 3-by-3 square blocks, with some of the
squares filled in for you. The object is to fill in
the blank squares in such a way that each
of the numbers1 to 9 appears exactly
once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly,
there should be only one way to complete the
diagram within the rules of the game.
Despite this apparent simplicity,
solving some sudoku puzzles
can be complicated indeed.
SORRY, WRONG
NUMBERS!
ALAS, we have the right answer to
the subtraction problem provided
at left, but we do not have the right
subtractable amounts. Indeed,
what's wrong is that four of the
numbers are upside down.
Simply invert three nines in
the top row and one nine in the
middle row (that is to say, make
them sixes), and alakazam, the
answer is correct.
How long will it take you to
up-end the nines?
Time limit is three minutes.
Top row: Nine, six, six, nine, six. Middle
row: Nine, six, nine, nine.
You draw them close to the
Obscure (Yet Interesting) Bible Characters and Their Stories
1. Ehud
The story of Ehud comes right out of Judges 3, but would fit in nicely to the plot of a James Bond movie.
Israel was under the oppressive rule of Eglon the king of Moab and cried out to the Lord for deliverance. The
Moabites were idol worshipers who did evil in the sight of the Lord. God sent Ehud and his cubit-long (about a
foot and a half) sword to assassinate the king and liberate God’s people from his rule.
Ehud must have been a smooth talker, because when he told the servants of the king that he had a “secret
message” for him (Judges 3:19), they left Ehud all alone with the king. Ehud’s “secret message” was the
sword that he brought — and the “special delivery” was a stab to the belly of the grossly-overweight king
which killed him! Then Ehud quietly locked the doors to the roof to keep the guards out and made a quick
getaway. When Ehud returned to the people of Israel, he led Israel in conquering their enemies the
Moabites.
2. Korah
Korah’s legacy is not a positive one. Numbers 16 describes his story.
Tools ♦ Equipment Parts ♦ Hyd. Hoses
Hardware ♦ Plumbing ♦ Electrical
2707 S. Fork Creek Rd. ♦ Liberty, KY 42539
To make a long story short, Korah raises up a mob of Israelites to oppose Moses’ leadership and questioned
the idea that he (Moses) was God’s only spokesperson. God didn’t take too kindly to Korah and the rebels and
causes the earth to swallow them up (Numbers 16:32). Opposing God’s anointed is insulting to God.
As bad as that situation may seem, this is a hopeful story because we know the end. God, in his great mercy,
used descendents of Korah to write some of the Psalms.
3. Jethro
Jethro was the father-in-law of Moses. In Exodus 18, Moses was overwhelmed with his task to lead Israel.
It seemed like everyone who had a problem came to Moses to mediate!
Exodus 18:13-27 describes Jethro’s wise suggestion for Moses to divide his labor into tens, fifties,
hundreds, and thousands to reduce his leadership burden and delegate responsibility to the people of Israel.
Jethro said if Moses followed his suggestion, “God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this
people also will go to their place in peace” (Exodus 18:23). Like a good son-in-law, Moses obeyed! This
allowed Moses not to be held up with trivial matters but rather have a better
system where they work themselves out.
This is a leadership structure followed by most business and governments!
4. Elishama
The thing that makes Elishama interesting is not actually because he is
interesting. In fact, we do not know a lot about Elishama, who was a scribe
/secretary mentioned by name briefly in scripture (Jeremiah 36:12).
What makes this obscure Bible character interesting is the extra-biblical
evidence that we have for him —and in turn, the historical reliability of
Scripture.
In 1986 outside of Jerusalem a clay seal was found that says “Elishama,
servant of the king,” proving that he was indeed a scribe in the exact time
setting and situation that Scripture describes. That is true evidence that all
of scripture is God-breathed, even down to the most tiny detail and seemingly
insignificant person!
5. Baalam
Balaam the Prophet is best known as “The Donkey Guy” for having his donkey
speak to him (see Numbers 22). He was sent by Balak, king of Moab, to
pronounce curses upon Israel. God had other ideas. He told Balaam to pronounce
blessings upon Israel and not return to Balak.
As well as being known as “The Donkey Guy,” Balaam is known for
“Balaam’s error.” In case you didn’t know, anytime your actions make your
name a new phrase describing a stupid action is a bad sign!
Balaam disobeyed the Lord by returning to the king Balak, the king who
wanted to curse God’s people. Balaam, riding his donkey, is confronted by
an angel of the Lord.
The irony in this story is that the donkey can see the angel of the Lord but
Balaam is unable to, one might say Balaam is spiritually blind so he cannot
see the angel. This is ironic because Balaam is a prophet, and prophets
were to receive direct communication with God!
The donkey is understandably startled to see the angel of the Lord on the
road and stops several times out of fear. Thinking his donkey had gone mad,
Balaam started to beat his donkey until the donkey asks, “Why have you
beat me these three times?” and then Balaam’s eyes are opened to the
angel of the Lord and his sin.
Look Out For Liens
(NAPSI)—When buying a
used car, it's important to
look for problems that aren't
readily apparent. You might
think of damage or fraud,
but this includes any
financial issues as well.
What To Watch For
For starters, make sure any
unpaid liens have been resolved
before buying the car.
A lien is "a legal right to the
vehicle by a third party to
ensure the repayment of a
debt or other financial obligation."
CAR FACTS
This is a larger issue than
many people realize. According
to researchers from the
Federal Reserve Bank, about
6 million Americans are at
least 90 days late on their
payments. If you buy a vehicle
with a lien on its title,
you become legally obligated
to pay off the debts. The lien
can also prevent you from
registering the car until the
lien is paid off.
Buying a used car with
a lien on it can keep you
from registering the vehicle
until the debt (that's not even
yours) is paid or otherwise resolved.
Your local county court
clerks office can tell if
there is a lien on a vehicle
with its vin #. They may
not be able to disclose any
information other than it
has a lien against it.
We live in a busy world. Days
are crowded with more things
to do than time allows. Instant
texting and rapid responses to
anything and everything,
whether accurate or not, crown
every moment of our lives.
Everyone seems to have an
opinion we need to hear on
every subject - from the
mundane to the insane, from
the very important to “stuff’
that does not matter. We have
become conditioned to listen
for something to listen to
whether it matters or not.
Psalm 75 explodes with an
important reminder. “We give
thanks to You, O God, we give
thanks for Your Name is near!
Men tell of your wondrous
works!” The fact that the word
thanks appears twice in one
sentence makes it intense and
dramatic. But we should not be
surprised. We are to thank God
not only for His wondrous
works but because He is near!
God Himself, our God Who
created everything and is in
everything and sustains
everything is close by.
Jesus once commanded Peter
to cast his net into the water to
catch some fish. He did and was
amazed at the results. The
disciple falls at His feet in fear
and wonder. What a miracle!
Jesus spoke and things
happened. God’s presence and
power came to life instantly.
The same is true for us today.
While we may not see many
extreme displays of His power,
nonetheless He is at work. The
little gifts in our lives as well as
the immense miracles in our
lives prove that He is near us and
caring for us. We must always
be aware of His presence.
Bothersome Calls
If you have gotten a strange phone
call lately and you feel that it may
be a scam, it has been advised to
just hang up. Some calls will give
you an option to have the call put
on a “do not call” list by entering a
keypad number, but experts say this
will only show the line is active and
you will likely still get unwanted
calls. To check on or report scams,
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
10 chicken wings
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup hot sauce
1 dash ground black pepper
1 dash garlic powder
In a small bowl mix together the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt. Place chicken
wings in a large nonporous glass dish or bowl and sprinkle flour mixture over them until
they are evenly coated. Cover dish or bowl and refrigerate for 60 to 90 minutes.
Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees F. The oil should be just enough to cover wings
entirely, an inch or so deep. Combine the butter, hot sauce, pepper and garlic powder in a
small saucepan over low heat. Stir together and heat until butter is melted and mixture is
well blended. Remove from heat and reserve for serving.
Fry coated wings in hot oil for 10 to 15 minutes, or until parts of wings begin to turn
brown. Remove from heat, place wings in serving bowl, add hot sauce mixture and stir
together. Serve.
The nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking.
The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density,
and the specific type of oil used.
