March
2017
.President’s Corner - March 2017
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
To spoil or not to spoil? We all recognize the horse that is truly spoiled - not in the good
way. I am talking about the one that takes control over his human, is pushy and demanding,
doesn’t respect space and is not dependable. Of course, we all know that this is a problem
that starts with the human in the relationship. Horses need structure and rules to live by -
the same type of hierarchical structure that they exhibit when living with other horses in a
herd. Horses feel better when they know “the rules” - which doesn’t mean that they won’t
take the opportunity to be the boss if you let them! I share these thoughts because I love my
horse almost beyond explanation. He is just so adorable and engaging and handsome and
cute and capable…. and he works his patootie off for me!!!!! His work ethic alone is enough
to make me want to feed him a bucket of carrots any time he might want them. But loving
my horse and doing right by him can be a tricky cliff walk. I want to smother him with my
love. In horse terms, that is different than how someone might spoil a grandchild. The right
kind of spoiling means he gets cooled down properly, blanketed properly and fed healthily in
a routine that creates comfort and regularity in his life. It means that he learns to stand in the
cross ties without angst because he is secure. It means that he is willing to climb into and
out of a trailer because he trusts me. It means that he doesn’t ever demand treats, but that
he is thrilled to be surprised with one. It means that he has variety in his work and his
environment. It means that he has respect for me because I have respect for him. It means I
have to be consistent and at times tough enough to keep the line drawn so that I feel safe
and he feels content with that line. With horses, our goal should be that “to spoil them”
means to provide them with routine, security, clarity, comfort, kindness and a mutual
respect. Once a horse is spoiled in the wrong way because there is no longer definition in
the relationship with his human, it is a difficult behavior to correct and maintain. I have rarely
seen a badly behaved horse that I felt was really content. Usually, that horse expresses fear
or belligerence as a defensive response to a lack of clarity regarding his place in the human
world. To spoil or not to spoil? It all comes down to how you define “spoiling” and that
makes all of the difference to your equine partner.
Dear FRC members ~
Happy New Year! Though it is just March, Spring will be upon us
before we know it. Spring means: FENCE Horse Trials, which this year
is April 15 and 16 - Easter weekend. Since the loss of so many horse
shows recently, FENCE depends on this Horse Trials as a major
source of revenue support for their operations. The Horse Trials are
also one of the most important ways for the Foothills Riding Club to
fulfill their Affiliate Status obligation to FENCE, so we may continue to
hold our events there.
Which is a long way of saying: We need volunteers! So many FRC
members have supported the FENCE Horse Trials in the past; we
appreciate and need your experience and expertise. There are many
places for those of you who are new to the sport as well, and volunteer
training is provided for some positions.
Please consider giving a day - or the weekend - to FENCE on April 15
and 16. If you can offer a day (or two!) we will need:
Your name
Phone number or e-mail address (or both)
Mailing address (for thank-yous, after)
Days you will be available to help
Volunteer position you would like
Any experience you already have
Send or call in this information to Tracie Hanson at
FENCE, admin@fence.org or 828.859.9021
Thank you!

A “Sold Out” Crowd greets our first Educational Seminar of 2017!
Our area pastures and fields should be in great shape in 2017 if the standing room only
crowd at FRC's first Educational Seminar was any indication. A packed house listened to Little
Mountain Farm Supply owner, Laura Backus, as she made pasture management simple. If you
want to plant grass seed, timing is
everything. For Coastal Bermuda plant in
mid spring. For Fescue plant in mid fall.
Get a soil sample (free during the winter
months from the NC Dept. of Agriculture)
and apply lime if needed. You also need
the sample to determine what, if any,
fertilizer to apply. Add some rain and
you've got grass!
Foothills Riding Club Educational Seminar coordinator
Kailey Parker was thrilled the turn out, "I am so thankful to all
those who came out to make our first seminar of the year a huge
success. Offering these educational seminars is just one of the
many things that FRC provides for our community and it was
wonderful to see not only familiar faces but many, many new
ones as well. Laura did a wonderful job of being light-hearted
and realistic about the challenges of pasture management and
everyone left with a wealth of knowledge to take back to the
fields!"
Ms. Backus also donated two door
prizes for FRC members. Jennifer Weaver
won the free FRC membership donated by
the club.
FRC puts on seminars throughout the year to educate all
equestrians from trail riders to dressage riders and much more.
Although the topic changes month to month, there is always a
social time prior to the presentation and FRC provides the
refreshments. For 2017, the FRC seminars will be held at the
Landrum Depot, 211 N. Trade St. in Landrum, SC beginning at 6:30pm for socializing.
The March Educational Seminar guest will be Dr. Mason Shelton, PT. He will tell us
how to take better care of ourselves from a physical therapist's perspective. Mark your
calendars for March 15, 2017 starting at 6:30pm.
For more information about Foothills Riding Club activities check the FRC website,
www.foothillsridingclub.org.

We hope you can join us for the April 1st Dressage and Combined Test Schooling Show (with
stadium jumping schooling rounds) at FENCE! Closing date is March 25th (entries must be
received by this date, so send entries in early!). Be sure to become an FRC member before
the show in order to qualify for the FRC amazing year end awards! Show entry forms and
information is on the website at www.foothillsridingclub.org.
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!
Attention 2017 competitors:
FRC will set up a self (ie) serve photo booth at our shows this year!
Weather permitting, you will have the perfect spot to capture the day with your
ribbons, horses, friends, dogs, or all of the above! FUN!
In addition, we will have a competitor hospitality table with
light snacks for you and your horse.
Just look for the FRC banner.

In the Spotlight
If you have attended any FRC event that involved food in the last few years then you have
seen our March “Spotlight of our Members person, Kathy Korth. Kathy has been a fixture
at horse shows, educational seminars and many other FRC events. You have seen Kathy
around; now let's learn more about her in her own words!
A native of Michigan, I lived in California and Florida
before moving to WNC in 1983. With a bachelors in Public
Administration and Political Science, I worked for
congressional and senate campaigns before moving on to
various marketing jobs over the years. I was a “stay at home”
mom for many years. I have two kids and two grandchildren.
I moved to Polk County in 2007 from the Asheville area. It
was a move I wish I had done sooner….such a great place to
have my horses and so much easier. I have never looked
back! My horses love it, also.
I have loved horses since I was a small child. I rode a
mechanical horse when I was a toddler outside a Kroger store
in Saginaw, Michigan and never looked back! Seriously- I
took every opportunity to ride, groom and muck a stall, horse
camps, leasing, hanging out at barns until I was able to own
my own horse. I took time away during early years of raising my children and was
fortunate my daughter declared at five years of age that she loved horses. I currently own
one horse and board another.
I pleasure ride my twenty-year-old, sometimes lame, Irish Sport Horse mare,
Chloe. I have had her for sixteen years. Every time I ride her it is a wonderful “gift”. We
have been through a lot together and really appreciate each other.
Of course, volunteering for FRC has been my volunteer commitment for the last few
years. I love the outdoors and enjoy gardening, hiking and taking care of my small farm.
Also, reading, cooking and home decorating are things I try to make time for.
I have been an FRC member probably since 2005. I belonged when I lived up in the
Asheville area and came down to some of the shows and meetings. After moving here in
2007, FRC was a great way to meet fellow equestrians and make new friends. I joined
FRC for all the great benefits of shows, education and, as I mentioned before, meeting
fellow equestrians. I really like the great people and the niche FRC fills in the horse
community.
Caring for and riding horses is hard on your
body! Do you know any long term equestrians
that have not dealt with back, neck, hip, knee,
or some other pain?? Dr. Mason Shelton, PT
and owner of ALIGN Specialized Body Care in
Mills River, NC is married to one of those
equestrians…Susan Shelton. Over the years,
he has tailored techniques to help the issues
that commonly plague the equestrian
community. He is looking forward to sharing
methods for dealing with pain, as well as
exercises to help with strength and flexibility
to AVOID pain.
Educational Seminar is Wednesday, March 15 at the Landrum Depot beginning at 6:30
for socializing and 7:00pm for the program. The Landrum Depot is located at 211 N. Trade
Ave. in Landrum, South Carolina.
dressage and combined training, through sponsorship of educational and recreational activities.
