2020
Our Halloween show was positively SPOOKTACULAR!! While we didn't have power or water,
everyone showed up and showed out! Thank you to the world's best volunteers, competitors,
and judges for braving the aftermath of Hurricane Zeta. We made the best of it all
and had loads of fun! The highlight of the day was the costume class. So much creativity
and amazing costumes!!
Thank you for everyone's patience in navigating the 2020 shows. Between COVID-19 issues
and changing over to new software, it has been a challenge, but we are looking forward to
a smooth, full show series in 2021! Stay tuned for show dates coming soon! Remember,
we are not doing show series awards for 2020, but your points will carry over to 2021's
show series!
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Annual Winter Banquet has been rescheduled to
1/22/22. All competitor and volunteer points accumulated through 2021 will roll over
to 2022, to be included with 2022 earned points. FRC looks forward to another great
Annual Winter Banquet, albeit a year away!
Daniela Moguel Clinic
During a crazy year like 2020, of course, our only clinic of the year was in the middle of
a hurricane! But a little rain never hurt anyone, and lots of fun was had! Massive
thank you to 5* International Eventer Daniela Moguel for weathering the storm and
teaching everyone. Riders went home with more tools in their tool belt and only a little
soggy!
Having this quality of trainer based right here in our Foothills neighborhood, and as a
FRC member, is so much fun and so valuable! Looking forward to working together
again for more clinics in the future.
Can we talk about the beautiful venue?! Big thank you to Kia and Michael from Long Shadows
Farm! The venue was picture perfect, the footing withstood lots of rain, and the barns were
beautiful. We would not have been able to pull this off without their help!
FRC member and a sponsor of Danny's, Science Supplements USA joined in on the fun and
even did a random drawing for a tub of their supplements! Thank you, Ryan and Jenna!
Some of the lovely pictures on the Facebook page were captured by
Morgan Patton.
She braved the rain and was able to memorialize a fun weekend!
As part of the Foothill's
Riding Club Community
Outreach, volunteers
participated in a road
cleanup on Moore Road
on November 7. FRC
would like to thank the volunteers
that helped pick up several
bags of trash.
My Life With Horses
My very first discovery of the world of horses happened innocently enough at 4 years old
when my grandmother took me to a horse show that her friend was holding at her barn.
One look at the horses jumping , the attire the riders wore and those amazing side saddle
ladies and I was hooked. From that point on I was always hounding my grandmother to go
see horses. She ran a resort in Flat Rock, NC nestled in the mountains and the woods. We
walked daily to the post office and my biggest thrill was to feed the palomino pony, Trigger,
and the percheron mare, Nell, a sugar cube as we passed their farm on the way. My
grandmother’s friend was Betty Marvin or “Miss Betty” as everyone called her. She ran
the Fleetfoot Pony Club in Hendersonville, NC. It wasn’t long before
she allowed me to ride there every once in awhile and participate
in a Pony Club meeting here and there.
I finally convinced my parents to let me take riding lessons at
Foxcroft Farms here in Greenville from the famous British horsemaster,
Jennifer Jones. My favorite school horse was a well mannered
paint named Apache. There were many fabulous school horses there but he had a
special place in my heart. It was there I learned a general distrust for small ponies having
several experiences where Champ, the small school pony,
would try to squirt out of the arena gate if I wasn’t paying
attention.
I got my own horse, a small quarter horse mare named Sue
Ellen (it was the late 70’s and I guess the t.v. show “Dallas” influenced
her name). I learned the ins and outs of horse care
with her and many a bareback adventure at a farm called the
“Hitching Post” on Congaree Rd in Greenville. I found a great
interest in participating in horse shows and eventually needed
a horse with a little more talent. Roustabout, or “Bo” as I
called him, was my soul horse. He came with many issues to overcome from a back-
In college I often taught Pony Clubbers on the weekends, but had my horse with me in
Spartanburg at school. Hitching Post was being sold as Haywood Mall and all the other
stores along Congaree Rd were being developed. I boarded at a place in Inman ran by a
Norwegian couple that were into hunters and jumpers. I did a little stint in show jumping
then because my horse was a talented jumper but I still really worked diligently on my dressage.
I married after college and moved to Raleigh, NC where I did some teaching and training
at some local barns. I was known as a dressage teacher even though I did jumping too. I
was honored to be a student of Kay Meredith during this period and learned a lot about real
dressage training. I cherish the time I trained with her. She was wonderful to me.
A few years later I was divorced and moved myself, Bo and my English bulldog back to
Greenville. I was able to find a few training jobs but with no connections anymore and no
internet, jobs were hard to find. I supplemented horse work with my hobby in fitness. I
met and married Kyle Gibson during this time and started a new life.
We started a family and the horse trainer life was no longer possible. I still rode but stayed
mainly in the fitness business. I formerly competed in bodybuilding competitions and fitness
competitions , earned many respected educational certifications and had a life long
connection from my dad to weight lifting. I taught group fitness, did personal training, nutritional
counseling and taught yoga. My horse Roustabout passed away soon after my 4th
child was born in 1998. I was so heartbroken, I took a little reprieve from horses for a short
time until my older kids showed an interest in horses. I then took lessons from local trainers
that my kids took from just to keep in “horse shape”.
After my 5 th child got well into elementary
school, I finally bought another horse, Summer
Blast. She was a young thoroughbred mare
and just had the basics. I brought her along in
dressage and jumping and participated in a
wide range of horse activities. My 3 rd child,
Coley, was very active as well and she got her
own horse. She also Joined Greenville Foothills
Pony Club and here I was again, full circle.
In the meantime,
I started working with Carolyn West. I am forever
grateful to her for teaching me, supporting me and
holding my hand through good times and bad. I
learned so much from her that I will never forget.
With her help, I climbed the levels and earned my
bronze medal , got my pro card, started teaching and
training again, thanks to Kimberly Carter at Bramblewood
Stables for the foot-in the-door opportunity, and
I did the USDF L Grad program.
In 2015 I had a bilateral hip replacement but was back at it in a couple of months. I was
travel teaching and training from Gray Court, SC to Arden, NC though I had my horse at Janet
Stone’s Flying Changes Farm in Marietta, SC. It was there I met Gandolf who had some
issues Janet wanted me to help her with. He was basically a big 17.2 hd scaredy cat that
liked to take off when triggered. He is really a great horse with a
big heart. He was just bad to take off when he felt afraid.
Horse shows were a very scarey place for him, especially the
warm up arena. It took A LOT of desensitizing and many a test
with a take off or big spook to
get him comfortable in a show
setting. I worked with him for a
year or so before he went for
sale and I knew despite his nuances
he was the horse for me.
I also began working with Julio
Mendoza who took all the great
things I had learned with Carolyn to the next level. I was
offered a job by Joyce Vassalo, who is now my partner in
crime, at Wolf Creek Farm Dressage in Pickens, SC not too long after that. I still travel
taught, but was getting more and more horses at Wolf Creek and it was getting overwhelming.
I moved from Janet’s to Wolf Creek to have them with me. I have a few outside clients
that are near by so I don’t travel much these days. A covered arena keeps me working
even on rainy days.
I continued to work with Julio earning my silver medal.
However in 2019, my husband was diagnosed with throat
cancer and started treatment in June. It was a very difficult
summer and I was unable to show that year but I was able to
work in a reduced capacity. He is now cancer free and I am
half way to my gold. We are working on grand prix right now
thanks to Julio. Summer is pretty much retired and living a
relaxed life. I ride her a few times a week. I have 11 horses in
training with me now, including a new Brazilian import we got last year, Lares Interagro
who will be 6 in December. Julio has been helping me with him and we hope to be in
the show ring next year.
was newsworthy. This is my daughter’s Christmas
There was a telephone,
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
Have you ever wanted to volunteer at an FRC show but were not sure what
the different jobs entail?
The volunteer job descriptions are now up on the website!
Go to www.foothillsridingclub.com and look for the links to job descriptions
on the right hand side of the shows page.
Volunteers earn club bucks for their time which can be used like cash for
club events and merchandise. FRC also has a volunteer appreciation
program where hours served count towards great year-end awards!
Contact Carole at frcvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com if you are
Interested in learning more or would like to volunteer at any of our
upcoming shows.
