2020 Goals
We asked our members what their goals were for 2020 while competitions and trails are shut
down.
We are all interested in what you are up to. Please send a quick post (or longer) to:
frcnewsletterads@gmail.com
Debbie Franklin—Working on ground work and I am continually training in dressage. Focus on
seat, impulsion, transitions
Pat Melton— Ride in my first rated Working Equitation competitions this summer (at Biltmore,
FENCE, Harriman TN, and Virginia Horse Park).
Natalie Schembra - Preston (aka The Flying Tomato) and I are taking this break in the show
season to hone our skills in all three eventing phases.
Building on a foundation of solid dressage work
from the last two years, the jumping phases are coming
together positively. We will be better prepared when
shows are able to start again, having had this additional
time to school cross country and work on technical
jumping. Our 2020 goals include a recognized event
and increased confidence in all three phases.
Erin Stroud— 2020, was supposed to my big year. But after realizing
that I am a fare-weather rider, something my mares and I realized
coming into Spring. We didn't work as hard as we should have in the
colder months and really became feral in our training. But now that
Spring has arrived and the sun sinks behind the horizon a bit later I
am finding that saddle-time is easier to achieve. My young OTTB
mare, Prim, and I are hoping to take on a few Beginner Novice
events later this year (fingers-crossed the show season jump-starts
back soon). Right now we are working our hardest to become soft,
quiet, and relaxed on the flat. We are quite the firecracker over
jumps; XC and stadium are our strong suits. But dressage has been
proving to be a challenge. We want to improve our flat so that all the
pieces fall into place for cleaner stadium rounds, and smoother XC
runs. Once the shows come back on the calendar we hope to have a
few tries at the Starter level, and by the fall look for the perfect Beginner Novice to try our hands
at.
2020 Goals
Carole Foster—Finding myself with now two full time jobs (Stay at home mom and the one that
actually pays for hay) my goal during this time is to continue to carve out time to ride. I am finding
that it is usually late at night but 30 minutes at 9 pm is better than no riding at all!
Meet the Board Members
We thought you might be interested to know who is running FRC behind the scenes to
make all our great events happen each year. So the next issues of the newsletter will
provide some brief bios of the 2020 Board of Directors.
President Cathy Schwartz lives in Landrum, SC where she owns and runs
Smokey Hollow Farm. She grew up in Ohio, then lived in Asheville for 7
years before purchasing Smokey Hollow Farm in 2007. She focuses on the
training, showing, & selling dressage, event, and hunter/jumper horses.
Cathy enjoys the FRC board for incredible members and it's involvement in
so many aspects of the equestrian community.
Vice President KC Betzel rediscovered riding after a long hiatus thru high school and college. After discovering
eventing and the value of giving back to your sport, she volunteered
as the Secretary for Silk Purse Ranch 3-Day Event & Horse Trials and
later helped form LVEE (Las Vegas Equestrian Events) and organized Horse
Trials. Upon moving to Landrum in 2006 she served on the board of FRC for 2
years and has been secretary for FENCE Horse Trials. On a more personal
note, although an event rider at heart, she has turned her focus to dressage.
On her daughter’s ex-event/Pony Club mount – a registered Mustang - KC
has earned her USDF Bronze and Silver Medals and is half way toward the
Gold medal. With kids no longer the central focus of daily life it is time to
once again become more involved in the horse community we call home.
Secretary Bri Ambrosic lives in Asheville where she has a small boarding
& lesson facility for hunt seat, eventing, and dressage called Blackberry
Stables. She started showing hunt seat as a college student on the BGSU
Equestrian team. Following college, she decided to branch out to dressage
and eventing by taking a working student job with Cathy Schwartz.
Shortly after heading out on her own, she began running and building a
successful lesson program and training business. Currently, Bri has the
honor of coaching the UNC Asheville equestrian team and teaching lessons
to her own students as well as showing both training and personal
horses. To find out more about Bri, her farm, and horses visit
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
Have you ever wanted to volunteer at an FRC show but were not sure what
the different jobs entail?
The volunteer job descriptions are now up on the website!
Go to www.foothillsridingclub.com and look for the links to job descriptions
on the right hand side of the shows page.
Volunteers earn club bucks for their time which can be used like cash for
club events and merchandise. FRC also has a volunteer appreciation
program where hours served count towards great year-end awards!
Contact Carole at frcvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com if you are
Interested in learning more or would like to volunteer at any of our
upcoming shows.
