2019
2019 Year in Review
Over the last 12 months the Foothills Riding Club has sponsored four roadside cleanups,
installed permanent water stations at FENCE and held eight educational seminars
- donating $800 in honorariums with additional money raised for numerous local
charities. At the November Annual meeting, the FRC collected pet food to be donated
to P3. As voted by members attending the Annual Meeting, donations of $1,000 each
were made to Thermal Belt Outreach and FERA. In July, the FRC donated $1,000 to
FENCE from the July benefit show. Our club awarded a scholarship, put on a Hunter
Pace, held well-attended schooling shows, organized USDF continuing education, a
working equitation clinic, a fundraiser for an injured local community member, and put
on the Annual Winter Banquet, which is open to all FRC members! The FRC continues
to support local charities for both animals and humans and looks forward to a
great 2020!
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approveddon’t
worry! The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be
an influx of applicants at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current
and preceding membership year will be considered when awarding scholarships.
Application deadlines are April 1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending
on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to apply!
FERA was chosen by Foothills Riding Club as a recipient of
our annual donation to an animal charity.
FERA (Foothills Equine Rescue
Assistance) & FERA and Friends
For most of us our animals are our friends, they are our
companions, they are our partners and, as such, we take care of
them so that we can enjoy many years together. Unfortunately, not
everyone feels this way and some animals are neglected, abused or
even tortured by their owners.
The very first equine
taken in…Milton Burro
A few years ago one of the Humane Society Board members was
called upon by the Polk County Sheriff's Department to see if she
could take in a starving donkey that had been impounded. Of
course she said yes and with this experience she had her eyes
opened to a real need in Polk County. She learned that Polk
County Animal Control has no designated funds or resources for
caring for rescued equines. This is where FERA comes in... this is
the Foothills Equine Rescue Assistance program that was
established to take in impounded equines and to help neglected
equines get the care they need.
Animals that have been impounded are usually suffering from long term neglect and are in
need of immediate medical attention. FERA was set up to provide transportation, shelter and
needed medical attention so that the Animal Control Officer can instantly impound an equine
that is need of immediate attention in order to save it's life. FERA also helps owners with
emergency hay assistance, blanketing assistance and medical care when they need temporary
financial assistance.
FERA is a 501(c)(3) and made up entirely of volunteers. All donations go 100% to the care of
the animals. Several years ago an emergency shelter was built to house impounded animals so
that the Animal Control Officer or the Animal Cruelty Investigators could immediately take in
animals in critical condition.
The Foothills Humane Society has recently restricted their animal intake to dogs and cats only.
This means that larger animals (goats, cows, llamas, pigs, etc.) have no way to get help.
Because of this FERA has added “FERA and Friends” to their mission and will now help with
all animals that the Humane Society no longer accepts.
Please check us out on Facebook and visit our web site FERANCSC.org. Much information can
be found on this very worthy organization. Donations can be sent to FERA, P. O. Box 14,
Columbus, NC 28722.
We, the FERA group, would like to wish you all, and your animals a wonderful Holiday Season.
