Member of the Month
Rachael Bradley
We caught up with FRC member Rachael Bradley this month. Take a few minutes to learn more
about her and her horses!
If you could try any other discipline which would you choose?
Vaulting if I were even slightly coordinated enough!
Near future showing goals?
Hoping to take Joe to several events in 2020.
Best show memory?
Exactly a year after I got and trained my OTTB, winning our
hunter division with him when the odds were against us.
Horse that left the biggest impact?
My OTTB, Mister. He has taught me patience, responsibility,
dedication and perseverance. We have learned so much together.
What three items can usually be found in your refrigerator?
Lemonade, extra sharp cheddar cheese, Green onions.
What’s your favorite meal?
Honestly nothing beats pizza or nachos with a tall glass of super
sour lemonade.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Talking to animals-imagine the dressage test you could lay out
What’s your favorite item of clothing to wear?
Pajamas, hands down.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
Bit ‘o News
Don’t think your news is worthy of publication? Sure it is!! We are all interested in what
is happening with you and your horses.
Send your news to frcnewsletterads@gmail.com
The first weekend of November, two FRC members, Cathy Berlin and Sue Mullen, audited a trainer's symposium with clinicians
Charlotte Bredahl-Baker and Anne Gribbons, put on by the Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association and hosted by
Shannondale Farm near Alpharetta, GA.
Fourteen horse and rider combinations each rode two days under the astute and educated eyes of Gribbons and Bredahl-
Baker. Some were on their own horses, while others rode client horses.
Anne Gribbons is a former USEF technical advisor. She has trained and shown 16 of her own horses to Grand Prix - 9 of which
were long listed for the US Equestrian Team. Charlotte Bredahl-Baker is the US dressage developing coach, has been on US medal
winning teams two times, was a selector for two Olympics, and has been awarded the USEF gold medal of distinction.
A memorable saying from Anne: "now she has a nice melody to her trot".
And from Charlotte: "never get greedy - stop before you make a mistake".
It was a fun and inspirational weekend watching two renowned coaches help trainers train!
It’s okay to not compete.
I have a student that only rides her horse at the walk. In her lessons, we work on accurate figures, correctly
sized circles, body position and lateral work. We talk about terminology, arena rules, the history of dressage
and more.
I have a student that never canters. We work on transitions, geometry, suppleness and more. We have
lunge line lesson days where we focus on rider balance and exercises.
I have a student that has no desire to compete. We work on correct basics, different movements, work
over ground poles and more. We practice dressage tests as a way to mark progress and to set goals.
Other riders ask these students… Why don’t you trot? Why don’t you canter? When is your next show? All
of these are valid questions and I believe it’s important to challenge yourself, to push yourself outside of
your comfort zone to learn more and become a better rider.
However.
There is beauty and value in simplicity. If you find peace, happiness and fulfillment in only walking or only
brushing your horse right now, that is okay. Give yourself permission without feeling guilty or bad for not
doing what other equestrians are doing. You can do those other things, if you want, when you are ready.
Everyone has their own individual journey to follow, their own thoughts, feelings, reasons, insecurities
and desires and that is okay.
