Member of the Month
Linda Williams
FRC membership is very diverse and this month it was so interesting to learn about
Linda Williams’ passion for Morgans! Ironically, Denny Emerson just touted the versatility of
the breed in a recent post!
Favorite horse memory? My favorite horse memory would probably be when my first foal
was born. I bought a Morgan mare that I showed in English Pleasure and Pleasure
Driving for a couple of years and then bred her. This was my first baby so it was very
special. I had him for 32 years, showed him in English Pleasure and Pleasure Driving
and he was the best horse I ever had. I still have 4 Morgans, 2 mares out of my original
broodmare, a show gelding I bought, and a gelding that my trainer gave me.
Why you chose your riding discipline and favorite thing about your discipline. I chose my
riding discipline (English Pleasure and Pleasure Driving) because I fell in love with Morgans
and wanted to learn to ride Saddle Seat and drive. It was quite a challenge but it
was fun. My favorite thing about it was winning a class and making a victory pass.
Favorite thing about your horse. My favorite thing about my Morgans is their versatility.
From the show ring to the trails I can always have fun with them.
What are three things that can usually be found in your refrigerator? The 3 things that are
usually in my refrigerator are chocolate milk, granola bars, and Esbilac (replacement
milk for raising baby wildlife).
Do you have a personal motto or catchphrase? I don’t really have a favorite motto but my
favorite word is WHY. I always like to know why something happens or doesn’t happen.
It drives my horse vet crazy!
This is a picture of Noah (the
show gelding I bought) and me
winning the reserve championship
in Amateur Pleasure Driving at a
Morgan show in Illinois in 2014.
Educational Seminar
Christina Reynolds of Triple Crown Horse Feeds
discussed “Leaky Gut” and the horse’s GI tract.
Wednesday, 18-Sept-2019
Christina identified that there are numerous impacts to a horses GI tract: changes in feed, changes
in environment, stress and illness. Of the things that can cause stress – and in particular impact
the GI tract are: heat, competition, trailering, etc. Literally any event that can be considered
something “stressful” can provide an impact to the equine GI tract. Stress response starts an inflammatory
process in the GI tract and those inflammatory cells then change the “intestinal lumen.”
Those lumen essentially “hold things together” and keep nutritional matter flowing and outside
of the bloodstream. The stress resonse causes inflammation to develop gaps or “leaks” In
the intestinal lumen. Since the lumen provide a smooth, gap-free passage of nutrients along the
digestive tract, when there are gaps from an inflammatory response, both good and back bacteria
can leak into the bloodstream. Imbalances in bacteria populations occur.
Researchers have applied and extended their research from large scale porcine (hog) studies to
the equine field (limited scope/population.)
Leaky Gut Leaky Brain: the leaks in the intestinal lumen from the stress response can further lead
to blood-brain barrier infiltration. Gut Disbiosis: in humans this is called gut biome remodeling
which induces anxiety and depression. Similarly, in horses a Leaky Gut (when the gut is essentially
leaking bacteria through the loosened intestinal lumen) this crossing of the blood-brain barrier
results in altered behaviour. Where does this mostly occur? In the HINDGUT where leaky gut
is most likely to occur.
Conditions when a horse may develop leaky gut – aside from stressful situations such as competition,
trailering, heat, etc. include administration of antibiotics. Suggestion and common prophylactic
protocol is to also provide probiotics while the horse is on antibiotics, to offset the undesired
elimination of all gut bacteria. Probiotics help replenish the beneficial bacteria that are often impacted
by antibiotics.
Common signs and symptoms: resistance to leg aids, particularly on the right side, funny odor to
the manure, slow eating, picking eating, girthing, diarrhea, changes in skin or musculature.
4
Two ways to treat leaky gut:
1. Through prevention: put on omeprazole to slow
the release of acid during times of stress – manage
stress levels of the animal.
2. Curative medications to stop the diarrhea (if present)
and then fix the problem
Management and Dietary Guidelines:
Less stress (may be easier said than done)
More Grazing, less acetate, add “Dr Green”
Change feed gradually
Utilize probiotics (the number and types of bacteria matter)
Utilize butyrate as noted in The Horse “Butyrate is a preferred energy source for the cells lining
the intestinal tract. Studies in several species have shown that providing supplemental
butyrate positively impacts tissue development and repair, strengthens the tight junctions
that hold the cells together and reduces inflammation that can cause additional injury to
the lining of the gut.” (Peng, 2009; Ma, 2012).
Casein Protein
Glutamine
Lipids
Mycotoxin management: low levels of mycotoxins will cause leaky gut.
Reduce grain intake, reduce high starch diet. No more than 20% NSCs.
Fish oil can increase insulin sensitivity.
Consult your vet on all of the above protocols and discuss which may be beneficial to your particular
horse based on his overall health profile.
Feed Considerations:
A low starch, beet pulp base of
Supplements which can aid in reparation of Leaky Gut:
ADR powder
Fish Oil Factor (Equivision / Stride Animal Health Inc.)
GI Calm supplement
**Consult your vet on all of the above protocols and discuss which may be beneficial to your particular
horse, based on his overall health profile. Always follow the advice of your veterinarian.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
