With Erin Stroud
A few weeks ago I got the opportunity
to compete in the
Blue Ridge Horse Trials at
Tryon International Equestrian
Center. Man O Man, the
whole weekend of competition
really tested us. But I can
now say that I and my 6-yearold
OTTB, who I've only had a
year and a half, got to ride on
one of the country's biggest
equestrian stages. We got to
run on the 2018 World Equestrian Games cross country course and jump in the infamous
Tryon Stadium, places where some of the best riders in the world had also ridden. It was a
kind of surreal feeling walking around the grounds thinking back on this very weekend 2
years ago that this was a place I saw Charlotte Dujardin, Laura Graves, Boyd Martin, and
Phillip Dutton bring home successes at the WEG.
I first visited TIEC when Annie Maunder asked me
to be in one of her herds of volunteers at the first
AEC's hosted by Tryon. It was there as I was at the
in-gate watching as some of my riding idols strolled
by on their way to jump a massive course in a
beautiful stadium. I vowed that I would ride in the
very same arena one day no matter what I did. The
2nd weekend of September is when the same
dream came true on an OTTB mare, Prim, that I
have trained myself.
We started the weekend off with Dressage, where she showed up like never before and had
a beautiful test. We are still working through with relaxation and suppleness but she was
obedient and responsive in all the right places. Sometimes I wish she would show up like for
practice every now and then, but I'll take it when I can
get it, LOL.
XC was the biggest course we have seen yet, it took us
out of comfort zones and pushed us to really ride. It
also didn't help that the skies opened up right before
our ride time and let down an unprecedented amount
of rain making everything just a bit more squishy. In
the warm-up, the hectic atmosphere was getting the
better of us, but after some thoughtful regathering and
some confidence-boosting jumps, we were on our way
over the bridge to the start box. The course was maxed
out for Beginner Novice and had some pretty complicated
questions for a BN course. But we came through
the finish flags clean and clear. Proud was an understatement.
Prim saved my rear in a few instances and
was in a beautiful rhythm as she took the course in
stride.
Watch my cross country run here (hold control and click link)
On Sunday in stadium jumping, we walked into an already large atmosphere, with butterflies
in both of our stomachs. There were 10 horses in warm-up all trying to jump the same
4 jumps, and poor Prim's little 6 y/o brain was having a hard time comprehending everything
happening. Luckily for us, there were no spectators crowding the stands around the
ring, and once we stepped out of the warm-up and into the ring we had a moment to
breathe before starting towards the first fence. Once we landed from the first jump it was
game on, Prim's ears pricked forward and she began looking for what was next. She took
to me to each fence and jumped with confidence. We had a single unlucky rail and a few
times faults but I was over the moon about it. I don't mind the time faults because I let her
trot many of the fences to help her balance and keep both of our confidences up.
Watch my stadium round here (hold control and click link)
We walked out the ring with smiles on cheers as we had just completed the hardest competition
we had faced yet. But she stepped up to the plate and we placed 9th out of 15 really
good pairs in a competitive open division. It was a good weekend to see where we are
at in our training and a great way to end our summer season.
Overall I am pretty dang proud of both myself and my mare. We had just accomplished
something that a lot of people haven't been able to do. With the best support system tuning
in over the live stream to the many "Good Luck" texts I received, I felt the nerves slip
away and the excitement take over.
Do you have a horse related memory to share with
us? We’d love to read it. Pictures are welcome!
Educational Seminar
How To Pull A Shoe
Our October Online Educational Seminar will feature local expert farrier Sean Gaul and his
associate Chaise Cantrall. "How To Pull A Shoe" has been a highly requested seminar topic
for years, however the logistics of one horse, one farrier and many sets of eyes has not
been a feasible live demonstration, so bonus of Covid we now have alternative ways to
reach the masses!
Sean and Chaise (pictured Sean on the right, Chaise
left) will show us the proper array of tools every
horse owner should have handy (whether at home or
on the road) in order to safely and effectively pull a
shoe in an emergency situation..... because who hasn't
had THAT horrifying moment when your horse
comes limping 3-legged lame to you with a shoe
smeared sideways on their hoof, often with a side clip
shoved up into the hoof wall!!!
Naturally in a scenario like this we all want our farrier
or vet to immediately magically appear in our barn to
remedy the situation, however that is not always possible,
so it is therefore important for us horse owners
to know how to safely pull a shoe and keep our trusty
steed comfortable until professional help can arrive!
The Solution???? Master Farrier Sean Gaul and his assistant
Chaise Cantrell have put together a quick informative
YouTube video detailing how to pull a shoe and the
tools you will need!
Here's the link..
Very Rewarding Ride
By Annie Maunder
I have a dilemma! My brain is saying that I am 15 years old, but my body is not listening.
A
I have a super Connemara mare that has been (not so) patiently waiting for her chance to
show off her talents and so far has not really been given the opportunity – even though she
has clearly been showing me how talented she is!!
I had begun to take lessons (those of you who know me, know what a rarity THAT is!) with
Daniela Moguel and was actually having a tremendous amount of fun! Danny rides for
Mexico and she and her husband, Zully, teach and train from their barn in Shelby, NC. I run
out of steam quite quickly these days, so I asked Danny if she would like to ride Nessie for
the rest of the lesson. Watching the two of them actually reduced this old fossil to tears!
Danny is about the same size as me and I saw myself 30 years ago (only MUCH better!). It
was at that moment that I realized my dilemma could easily be resolved, which was reinforced
when Danny refused to get off of Nessie because
she was enjoying her so much!
We have forged a wonderful relationship where I am
privileged to live vicariously through a kind, talented
rider and her lovely supportive team. If you had told
me that I would enjoy seeing someone else ride my
horse, frankly, I would have been insulted – but I
would have been wrong. Danny took Nessie Training
level at Windridge in October and proved to all watching
that a thoughtful and confident Cross Country ride
could be spectacular. Both horse and rider finished
sporting huge grins – oh yes, AND so did the OWNER!
Rider Review
Remember when you could submit a picture of your
position to the Practical Horseman for a chance to
be reviewed by George Morris?
We all would sit on the edge of our seats to see what he
thought about someone's position and eagerly read for
whether his comments were nice or not so nice. Does the
rider pictured look familiar? That would be our own FRC
president, Cathy Schwartz, who was the lucky recipient of
an almost glowing review from George himself!
We have decided to host our own Rider Position Review! One lucky rider will have their
position critiqued by a local FRC member trainer to be featured in our next newsletter and
social media! All rider identities will remain anonymous and our trainer's name will only be
released when the critique is published. Each month we will have a different trainer review a
different position. So keep an eye on our newsletter and social media sites to see what kind
of position we are requesting.
Thank you everyone for participating in our rider review. We loved seeing everyone's jumping
position. For next month we want to see everyone's flat/dressage position.
We welcome all disciplines. So if you happen to be sitting in a western saddle, send us your picture!
The classical dressage position is very similar to how you sit in a Western saddle.
Please send all entries to Social Media Coordinator, Erin Stroud,
at erin.e.stroud@gmail.com. All Entries are Due November 4th!
Get Ready.., Get Set.., Go!!!
We have a program in place that allows Volunteers to rack up
hours to win an embroidered FRC Polo shirt, an embroidered FRC
jacket or an embroidered FRC coat.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
Have you ever wanted to volunteer at an FRC show but were not sure what
the different jobs entail?
The volunteer job descriptions are now up on the website!
Go to www.foothillsridingclub.com and look for the links to job descriptions
on the right hand side of the shows page.
Volunteers earn club bucks for their time which can be used like cash for
club events and merchandise. FRC also has a volunteer appreciation
program where hours served count towards great year-end awards!
Contact Carole at frcvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com if you are
Interested in learning more or would like to volunteer at any of our
upcoming shows.
