Member Memories
FRC Member Paula Rauscher shared this memory:
“I’m not going to buy another horse.” How often have we said that? And for most of us, a story
follows. Here is mine, all the way from 1981.
Soon to be forty years ago, I was working/riding at a small boarding facility in Pennsylvania,
whose owner/trainer was an eventer. Linda and her husband also ran horses at Keystone Race
Track and bred a few horses to their young TB stallion. I did the morning barn chores while they
were at the track, and rode the horses they brought home to re-purpose (i.e., the ones who didn’t
earn their keep at the track.) I was happy with this situation, having sold my first horse a few
years earlier and being busy with two preschool age daughters.
And then one beautiful day in May, the phone rang. Linda had been hired to transport a mare to
the killer auction. The mare had borne several winners at the track, but had been barren for the
last couple years and was supposedly “unrideable”. She was a beautiful dark bay mare with a
kind expression – so Linda did what any responsible person would do. Instead of going to the
auction, she brought her home – and called me. “I’m not going to buy a horse”, I stated emphatically.
“Just come and look at her”, Linda implored. A few hours and $500 later, “Manor Squaw”
was mine.
I started calling her “Mom” and it stuck. Her show name became “Mom’s Salvation”, but it was
always unclear which mother (she or I), was being saved. She was a lovely ride, willing and
honest. We were getting ready to go to our first Baby Novice event and just finishing up a dressage
lesson, when Linda asked if I would consider trying to breed her.
4

Member Memories
Normally, I am not an impulsive person. However! In short order, Mom was untacked and introduced
to the stallion. Nature took its course, and soon it was time to confirm if she was in foal.
Enter the veterinarian from UPenn, who was familiar with my mare and her case history. He (not
so kindly) told us that we were crazy and that the she would never carry to term.
Mom’s pregnancy was smooth and uneventful, right up to the end. A few days shy of her due
date, she began dripping colostrum, but showed no sign of going into labor. Nameless UPenn
vet came to visit on a Monday and advised that if the mare did not go into labor by noon
Wednesday, we were to transport her to New Bolton to be induced. So began a very nerve
wracking baby watch, with me sleeping in the car outside her stall. I had only been home for a
short time on Wednesday morning when Linda called to advise that Mom was in labor. That
morning, she delivered a healthy and perfect chestnut colt.
I ended up keeping the colt and transferring Mom back to Linda. She delivered a foal reliably
every year for the next several years, until it was deemed time for her to retire.
So what’s the moral of this story? Sometimes being impulsive is a good thing? Horses will always
surprise you? Knowledgeable authorities are occasionally wrong?
P.S. I wish Dr. “I Hate to Be Wrong” could have been happier with this result. He was kind
enough, however, to not charge me for any of his barn calls.
Meet the Board Members
We thought you might be interested to know who is running FRC behind the scenes to
make all our great events happen each year. So the next issues of the newsletter will
provide some brief bios of the 2020 Board of Directors.
Hospitality Chair Jane Lynch says -A relatively new resident in
Columbus, my husband, Terry, and I moved here from Cincinnati
in September of 2014, and we love it here. We are trail
riders and have no show experience though our older daughter
evented. I was a dentist for 33 years and am now retired. We
have 2 married daughters and a new granddaughter. I have
been helping with hospitality at the FRC horse shows and really
enjoy meeting and serving our volunteers.
Treasurer Natalie Schembra lives on a small farm in Gowensville,
SC. She grew up on Hilton Head Island, SC and came to the upstate
by way of UNC Chapel Hill to work as a tax accountant in Public Accounting.
Although not intending to buy a farm at the time, her
heart horse, Paris, needed her own farm, bringing Natalie to the
most wonderful neighborhood. Now retired, Paris supervises her
new little OTTB brother, Preston, who Natalie is working to bring
along in eventing. Natalie is looking forward to being a part of the
FRC Board and getting more involved in this great community.
Volunteer Chair Carole Foster lives in Fountain Inn, SC with her husband, son and
two dogs on a hobby farm. She began riding and competing in hunters at the age
of 8 in Blythewood, SC. For 10 years she trained and taught beginner riding lessons,
migrating to the Greenville area during this time. She now enjoys being an
amateur and has plans to further her education in Dressage with her Oldenburg
gelding, Hoover. Carole discovered FRC when she had the need to introduce an
OTTB to the show scene for the first time. The FRC shows are an excellent atmosphere
for both riders and horses and she happy to be on the board in a position
where she can meet so many people in the horse community.
Education Chair Natalie Bacon lives in Columbus, NC with her
husband, 3 small children, 2 Gypsy Vanner horses, and 2 Australian
Shepherds. Natalie retired from the North Carolina Attorney
General’s office as an Assistant Attorney General specializing in
child welfare law. These days you can find Natalie shuttling children
to and from school and activities and riding her gelding
Guinness. Natalie loves to trail ride and dabbles in Western
Dressage and trail obstacle competitions.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply
for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year.
Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to
defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be
considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and
you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience
with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee).
This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows,
newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership
year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April
1 st , July 1 st , October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member
is eligible to apply!
Have you ever wanted to volunteer at an FRC show but were not sure what
the different jobs entail?
The volunteer job descriptions are now up on the website!
Go to www.foothillsridingclub.com and look for the links to job descriptions
on the right hand side of the shows page.
Volunteers earn club bucks for their time which can be used like cash for
club events and merchandise. FRC also has a volunteer appreciation
program where hours served count towards great year-end awards!
Contact Carole at frcvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com if you are
Interested in learning more or would like to volunteer at any of our
upcoming shows.
