CAMP COURAGEOUS’ ADVENTURE PROGRAM
Camp Courageous is known throughout the
country for its well developed high and low ropes
adventure program. I receive calls regularly about
which activities we offer, what strategies we use
to include as many participants as possible, who
inspects our courses and how we implement the
staff training. It all started in the late 1970s with
what was then called the 'Confidence Course'. The
adventure program has now grown to ten separate
high ropes events and two low ropes courses. It
is no exaggeration to say there is something for
everyone with the adventure activities.
Several years ago I was giving a talk to a Brain
Injury Support Group about camp. After everyone
saw the slide show it was time for questions. Patty
was in the audience and shared with pride, “ I may
not be able to walk, but I can climb a tree at Camp
Courageous!” With the pulley system, Patty and
hundreds of others who use wheelchairs can climb
the tree or Angle Dangle or PlayPen or more. One
can only imagine how truly exhilarating it must
be to leave the chair on the ground and check out
a bird's eye view of the camp.
I remember once a few years ago facilitating
the burma bridge. Martha was nervous about
taking a step on the aircraft cable and walking
across while holding on to the side cables; yet
she hesitantly put on the harnesses and helmet,
listened closely to the instructions and not only
took a step or two, but walked all the way across
the Burma Bridge and back. I will never forget
what she said once she was on solid ground. “ You
know, Jeanne after tackling the Burma Bridge I
think I can do just about anything!”
Martha verbalized what I could only hope each
and every camper feels as they climb the wall in
the gym or swing across the cable on the super zip.
It is our goal that each camper finds that internal
strength to try something new, perhaps overcome
Congratulations to
Brianne Hupke &
Adam Tremmel of
Ames who were
married in the Sill
Barn at Camp
Courageous, with
the reception in the
lodge, and overnight
guests stayed in the
dorms and used the
gym and pool.
a fear or hesitancy and discover their abilities. It
is our goal that this new found confidence will
carry over to other settings, be it school, home,
relationships or work. Camp gives campers
the opportunity to say to themselves long after
leaving Camp Courageous,” I think I can do just
about anything that comes my way!”
The Centipede is located behind the swimming
pool. One of the trees has died and we are in
the process of replacing that event with newly
acquired donated utility poles. The new event
will be called the Jungle Gym and will include 5
different climbing, walking and swinging events.
The Team Beam will be one of the activities
where campers on the ground hold onto ropes
to help their teammate on the event walk from
one swinging beam to the other. The campers
and staff are excited about this new addition and
we are asking for any financial help possible to
cover the cost of building the event, training the
staff, inspection of all the courses and equipment
needed. The total cost is estimated at $10,000. All
gifts for this exciting new adventure activity are
most appreciated.
The Super Zip is
a favorite activity
for many campers
although it can be
challenging to take
the first step off the
platform. Camper,
John Davison from
Davenport, IA,
stepped up to the
challenge and had a
smile on his face the
whole time! It was
his first time on the
Super Zip.
Marginal Note: You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was.
Dave and Carolyn
Mason from Bettendorf
traveled to camp in
early October to deliver
some much needed
supplies for camp and
the campers. They are
constantly on the look
out for good buys for
items on camp's needs
list. On this date they
brought fitted sheets, cases of bleach and
games and toys for the campers. Many thanks
to the Masons and their dedication to camp!
The Loyal Workers & Friends from the
Stanwood and Clarence area once again
came to camp to volunteer for a morning.
Before beginning their work, they had to
deliver several beautiful quilts made by
the ladies and some much needed paper
products to the office. These ladies are such
fantastic volunteers and are always willing to
try new things from mailings, cleaning, etc.
This year their project was wrapping gifts for
the camper's holiday parties. Shown above
are the ladies and the mountain of gifts they
wrapped. We look forward to seeing them
again next year. Thank you!
The ladies with the Rachel Circle and Friends
from Brandon made their annual trip to Camp
Courageous to volunteer for the day working
on the PMCI Cent-a-Gallon mailing. They also
brought along a large donation of food, paper,
craft supplies, paper products and other much
needed items. It's always a great time working
with this group. After finishing the mailing they
shopped in the camp store, purchased some
fruitcake and scheduled a date to return next
year. We can't wait! Thanks ladies.
