Camper Adventure Activities Require Safety Equipment FAREWAY STORES & CAMP
COURAGEOUS PRESENT:
Camp Courageous has been fortunate to
have a great adventure program since its
inception. The adventure program allows
special needs campers to participate in a
wide range of climbing activities such as
the Wall Climb, Zipline, Burma Bridge,
etc.
These activities give campers a sense
of normalcy that sometimes is not shown
to them in the real world. Here at Camp
Courageous it is felt that trying an activity
is its own reward. It does not matter if a
camper climbs all the way to the top of a
climbing activity or if you just work up
the nerve to put on the harness, it is all an
accomplishment.
Camp uses two types of seat harnesses.
One type of seat harness used is made by
Misty Mountain called the Challenge. It
is primarily used with campers who use
wheel chairs because they are easier to put
on, but ambulatory campers can wear it
as well. This gives camp great versatility.
The other seat harness used is made by
Adventure Experiences Inc. and comes in
three sizes. It is very convenient to have
sizes small, regular, and extra large to meet
a camper’s need.
Another important components at
an adventure activity are helmets and
carabiners. Not only does the camper or
participant wear a helmet while climbing,
the belayer (properly trained facilitator,
attached to climber via rope), the backup
belayer and anyone who is going to be
standing under the climbing element also
wears them to protect their heads from
falling objects. Carabiners are used to
clip in campers to the belay rope with the
belayer on the other end, keeping campers
safe.
Each of the climbing events use an average
of six helmets, six seat harnesses, six chest
harnesses, and seven to nine carabiners.
Currently, camp has ten climbing activities
available with a new one coming tentatively
by the summer of 2010.
Some of our equipment is getting older
and needs to be replaced within the next
year. Camp has begun the process of
replacing the worn out equipment with the
gear described above, however this can be
financially overwhelming in these difficult
times. Camp wants to reach out to you
for help in purchasing the best possible
equipment to continue providing the safest
possible adventure experience for the
campers.
