2009 Fruitcake are an early sell-out!
The Camp Courageous Fruitcake sales were a resounding success this
year. While the reputation of our delicacy is changing the perception of
fruitcakes, the continued success we enjoy is due in large part to the vast
network of promoters, delivery volunteers, and vendors/retailers who
believe in Camp Courageous and give so generously of their time, talent,
and resources. We wish you all the best in 2010!
Dr. John Haefner
was one of my
professors at
the University of
Iowa in the field
of education. He
was exceptional!
Along with
classroom work,
John oversaw my
student teaching
in Monticello, IA
and my fellowship
to teach in Exeter,
England. John and his wife Dorothy visited
me while teaching in England. We had a
wonderful time there and it was always a topic
of conversation for us the next 30+ years.
We stayed friends as I returned to teach in
Iowa and stayed active with the University of
Iowa. He was not a happy camper when I left
teaching and came to Camp Courageous, but
quickly fell in love with Camp Courageous, as I
did. John & Dorothy became loyal supporters.
Dr. Haefner, as a teacher, inspired me and he
helped me realize there isn’t a better profession
in the world than teaching. John asked that
his memorial’s go to Camp Courageous. We
will dearly miss John, but what an incredible
legacy he leaves behind in so many of us…
Some Things I Still Believe
The ultimate mission of instruction in the
social studies is, I think, the development of
informed and participating citizens capable
of understanding the major problems
confronting a democratic republic such as
ours. . . . It goes, almost without saying,
that it demands direct and frequent involvement
in the community on the part of both
teachers and students.
– Dr. John Haefner
Marginal Note: The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.
Connie (Naylor) Stephens
of Victorville, CA passed away at the age
of 90. She was the sister of
Jerry Naylor of Scotch Grove and
Jack Naylor of Burlington. Over the
years, Connie knitted hundreds and
hundreds of hats for the campers.
Celebrating Honorary Board Member Leo
Greco (Front & Center) 88th birthday include
his family Larry, Lisa, Lance, Linda, and
LuAnn. One will never meet a nicer family.
Leo and Louise did a beautiful job!
A big thank you to the Maquoketa Kiwanis for
inviting Camp Courageous to give a program
to them. Long time supporters of Camp
Courageous, we are grateful for their wonderful
check and year-round support! Great group!
Our dear friend, Ted Rittenmeyer of Iowa City,
along with Eldon Stutsman of Hills (Founder
of Stutsmans) always brought plastic ware
from the Old Capitol Kiwanis Club in Iowa
City to camp before each breakfast. Eldon
died, and Priscilla Wright, Ted's friend, began
to help. Ted has developed health concerns
and is no longer able to head-up this project.
Ted's Kiwanis Club honored him with a
special plaque for his years of dedication to
this project. With Ted's retirement, the reigns
have been turned over to Al & Jan Wicks of
Iowa City. We will miss Ted and Priscilla, but
will continue to look forward to seeing them at
breakfasts and other events! Special thanks
to the Old Capitol Kiwanis Club in Iowa City for
the wonderful check Al personally delivered...
great long time supporters! (L-R) Priscilla
Wright, Jan & Al Wicks.
