Benefits of gifting of cash, stocks, and other
assets to Camp Courageous
Finding the “Best” Asset to Give
Have you been considering making a gift to Camp Courageous?
Oftentimes the decision to give is easier than the decision of what
to give.
If you have appreciated stock in your portfolio, consider giving
the shares directly to Camp Courageous. Giving stock directly to a
qualified 501(c)(3) organization typically results in a larger donation for the organization, a
greater charitable tax deduction for you and the avoidance of tax liability for capital gains.
Selling your shares to give a gift
If you sell your shares in order to make a donation, you will pay long-term capital gain
on the growth of the shares. For example, if you hold 100 shares of Public Company with a
cost basis (purchase price) of $10 per share and if those shares have a current value of $30
per share, then the capital gain upon selling them would be: $20 per share ($30 per share
current value - $10 per share cost basis) multiplied by 100 shares totaling $2,000 of taxable
gain. Likely, your gift will be net of the tax liability and will total the current value ($30 per
share x 100 shares = $3,000) minus the tax liability ($2,000) and equal $1,000. Likewise,
your charitable tax deduction will equal $1,000.
Giving your shares directly
Alternatively, if you donate your shares directly to Camp Courageous, you will avoid
capital gains, donate a larger amount to the camp and receive a greater charitable tax
deduction. Because the shares are given to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, no capital
gains tax is due. As such, your gift will constitute the full value of the shares totaling $3,000
from our example above. Your charitable tax deduction will also be $3,000.
Taking the time to analyze your assets and to choose the “best” asset to give benefits not
only Camp Courageous, but may also reduce your tax liability. Should you need assistance
reviewing your assets and structuring a charitable gift, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We would be happy to assist you.
