assets to <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Courageous</strong><br />

Finding the “Best” Asset to Give<br />

Have you been considering making a gift to <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Courageous</strong>?<br />

Oftentimes the decision to give is easier than the decision of what<br />

to give.<br />

If you have appreciated stock in your portfolio, consider giving<br />

the shares directly to <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Courageous</strong>. Giving stock directly to a<br />

qualified 501(c)(3) organization typically results in a larger donation for the organization, a<br />

greater charitable tax deduction for you and the avoidance of tax liability for capital gains.<br />

Selling your shares to give a gift<br />

If you sell your shares in order to make a donation, you will pay long-term capital gain<br />

on the growth of the shares. For example, if you hold 100 shares of Public Company with a<br />

cost basis (purchase price) of $10 per share and if those shares have a current value of $30<br />

per share, then the capital gain upon selling them would be: $20 per share ($30 per share<br />

current value - $10 per share cost basis) multiplied by 100 shares totaling $2,000 of taxable<br />

gain. Likely, your gift will be net of the tax liability and will total the current value ($30 per<br />

share x 100 shares = $3,000) minus the tax liability ($2,000) and equal $1,000. Likewise,<br />

your charitable tax deduction will equal $1,000.<br />

Giving your shares directly<br />

Alternatively, if you donate your shares directly to <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Courageous</strong>, you will avoid<br />

capital gains, donate a larger amount to the camp and receive a greater charitable tax<br />

deduction. Because the shares are given to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, no capital<br />

gains tax is due. As such, your gift will constitute the full value of the shares totaling $3,000<br />

from our example above. Your charitable tax deduction will also be $3,000.<br />

Taking the time to analyze your assets and to choose the “best” asset to give benefits not<br />

only <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Courageous</strong>, but may also reduce your tax liability. Should you need assistance<br />

to provide camp with a huge selection of<br />

items the year-round. From trees, to flowers,<br />

to a wide variety of products, Lynn has been<br />

wonderful!<br />

Jared Pirkl and Jeff Furler, teachers with the<br />

Benton Community School District, Norway<br />

Elementary, delivered a large donation of<br />

canned goods, food and paper products.<br />

These items were collected by their generous<br />

students. Thank you Norway Students, the<br />

campers will really enjoy your gifts!<br />

Kristen Farrar of Bangor, ME is seated with<br />

attending camp since 1985. She is well<br />

known among the staff for her bright smile and<br />
