The 1st Annual Walkin’ & Wheelin’ for Camp Courageous a Big Success The first annual “Walkin’ & Wheelin’ for Camp Courageous” was held on Sat. November 14, 2009 at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids and was a big success. It was a fun-filled event with plenty of food, music and socializing. Walkers could stop for water, juice, a cookie or granola bar, or try their hand at the “Wheel of Fortune” sponsored by the Chick-fil-A and win food coupons. Thank you to Jules Bormet, Marketing Director for Chick-fil-A at Westdale Mall for being a huge help and donor. Pictured above is “Team Weekenders,” made up of respite campers, family, and staff. The event was open to everyone and it was exciting to see so many campers, their families, and friends take part. Many of the teams created a unique look with their own T-shirt design! Camp t-shirts were given to each participant donating at least $10. It was fun to have so many of the past and present counselors who worked or work at camp walking and interacting with the campers and other walkers. Camp would like to thank all who took part, donated to, or volunteered, especially the Soroptimist Club of Cedar Rapids who helped set up the evening before and worked the day of the event. Many thanks to Troy Munger, manager at Westdale Mall, and Westdale Mall for allowing camp to have the walk at their facility. Visit the‑ camp’s web site at: www.campcourageous.org Participants did the hour long walk at their own pace on both floors of the mall and were treated to the sounds of the Pandemonium Steel Drum Ensemble, who traveled that morning to the walk from Dubuque to entertain. The morning ended with awards given to the individual and group who raised the most money for the event. Pictured above is Rachel Sunne, a camper from Dundee IA, surrounded by her team. She won the individual category and received an iPod for her efforts. The team prize went to the group from Starmont High School. Far left is past Camp Courageous Board Member, Jim Klinger with the board of directors of the Parrot Heads. This group has a lot of fun helping others. Great Group! Thank you to Sherri Thurstan and Alicia Burnett for providing Camp Courageous the opportunity to give a program to their Insurance Associates of Cedar Rapids group. This group had wonderful questions and many had been involved in a variety of projects at camp. Let's get HANDS-ON! With the more than 5,000 individuals with disabilities served annually at Camp Courageous, staff use about 65,000 gloves for personal care and camper needs. The camp would not be the safe, healthy place it is today without the counselor’s ability to be “hands-on” with these amazing individuals. On average, camp uses 65 cases of gloves, each case costing $30. It is a substantial cost for the camp, but well worth the investment of caring for these special campers. Would you consider giving a gift of $30 for a case of gloves as a hands-on way of meeting the camper's needs? All at Camp Courageous thank you! Thank you to the Iowa Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation for their donation to Camp Courageous. The presentation was made during the Fall Reunion Banquet at the Scottish Rite Temple, Cedar Rapids Consistory in Cedar Rapids. Presenting the check from left to right are Gary Sissel, Sovereign Grand Inspector General 33° from Bettendorf ; Honorary Board Member Tom Eggleston 33° from Cedar Rapids, Charles K. Ford, president of his class; and Bill Jacobson, 33° from Cedar Rapids. A group of individuals with unswerving integrity. Thank you to Bob Hatcher for having the Jones County Annual Tourism Meeting at Camp Courageous in the Sill Barn. Great group! Congratulations to Bob and Doris Hatcher who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this night. Campers enjoy a spooky night at annual Halloween Dance On October 27th Camp Courageous held it’s annual Halloween Dance. Campers and staff danced the night away in the camp lodge while enjoying refreshments and great music. During the event a costume contest was held. The winners are pictured. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped to put on this free event for campers, including the Cornell basketball team from Mt. Vernon and the West Delaware High School students. (L-R) Pete Reinertsen, CEO of Consolidated Energy in Jesup, IA presents Honorary Board Member Norb Bahl a beautifully framed cover of the Iowa Oil Spout which featured a story on Norb Bahl and the beginnings of a 30-year relationship between the Petroluem Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa and Camp Courageous. We can't thank Norb and Consolidated Energy enough for leading the charge in this relationship. Norb and Pete are surrounded by the Consolidated Energy staff. A wonderful group! Had the pleasure of spending the majority of a day with Honorary Board Member Norb Bahl of Jesup. Norb was the key person to introduce Camp Courageous to the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa in 1981. That relationship helped the camp grow from a fledgling facility serving a few hundred campers with special needs to a facility today that serves thousands of campers annually. It was a true joy to visit with Norb about the past 30-years. Norb is a wonderful person! Marginal Note: Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. Food & beverages are available all day, including pie & ice cream. Admission is $3.00 and parking is free. All proceeds benefit the over 5,000 campers with special needs that visit Camp Courageous each year.
