Swaffham Rotary Club President’s Corner Part of Swaffham’s contribution to the six million purple crocuses that have been planted throughout the country to publicise Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign to eliminate poliomyelitis from the world. The purple crocus symbolises the purple dye on the fingers of children who have received the vaccination. Since 1987 the number of annual cases worldwide has dropped from 350,000 to 35 - all in war-torn countries with remote areas. For certain eradication there must be no cases for three years. The end is tantalisingly close but difficult and expensive to achieve, requiring real tenacity. ‘Pride in Your Community’ Having ourselves initiated and undertaken limited litter-picking in patches in Swaffham, we are delighted that the Town Team is launching its ‘Pride in Your Community’ initiative with the meeting in the Assembly Rooms on the morning of Wednesday 29th March. A very worthwhile initiative which the Rotary Club will certainly support – and you get hot drinks and beans-on-toast! ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ On Monday 13th March we had a speaker from the ‘far east’ - next year’s Rotary District Governor for East Anglia, Robert Lovick whose home club is Great Yarmouth Haven. Robert eloquently reminded us that, while the pursuit of peace, international health, disaster relief and freedom from oppression are essential and worthwhile aims, there are issues of equivalent importance closer to home. Two are homelessness and loneliness. As with all difficult issues no single organisation, voluntary or governmental, has a complete answer. Partnerships and joint approaches between organisations that talk to each other are often more effective. We need volunteers who can offer a couple of hours of their time each week to mentor the young people as they make choices about their futures, raising aspirations by exploring together the young person’s skills, interests and abilities. What does a Volunteer Mentor do? Mentors provide support to a young person with SEND to help them develop a personal profile of their skills and interests, their likes and dislikes and their future goals. The Mentor can then support the young person to start working towards these; this can include accessing volunteering, work experience and training opportunities, or social activities such as drama groups, sporting activities, shopping and eating out. Who can become a Volunteer Mentor? Mentors come from all walks of life. We need people aged 16+. No experience is needed but patience, the ability to listen and a sense of humour are all useful skills. What support does a Volunteer Mentor get? Mentors receive full training and support; out of pocket expenses are paid. This can be a very rewarding role and also offers the chance to gain experience in the care sector. Wissey U3A Although most members of the U3A have retired from full-time gainful employment, others still work part time. The talk on Cerebral Palsey by Joan Latta in March was most informative and well received by those present at the monthly meeting. A lively presentation about the life of Oliver Cromwell with sound effects follows on 6th April with the AGM being held on Thursday 4th May. Members interested in writing prose, plays or poetry will be offered the chance of attending a Creative Writing Study Day in June. The Annual Archery event restarts in April and this year there will be an opportunity for members to participate in a Clay-shooting event at Chalk Farm near Swaffham. The Bridge for Beginners activity group is increasing in popularity and the Table Tennis group travel to Thetford in April to take part in a friendly U3A tournament.
