The Nicholas Hamond Academy<br />

Leanne Smart who is a student at The Nicholas<br />

Hamond Academy was recently invited to the House<br />

of Commons as a representative of the Iceni Youth<br />

Members Committee. Awards were presented by<br />

Rob Wilson, MP, which celebrated and publically<br />

recognised the contribution of individual young<br />

people and member organisations of the British<br />

Youth Council for their work throughout 2016. The<br />

day also presented an opportunity to bring together<br />

young people and decision makers to engage in<br />

dialogue on decisions that they care about.<br />

Students spent a day preparing and learning ‘all things<br />

Greek’ about the country’s cuisine at The Nicholas<br />

Hamond Academy recently. They tackled all sorts of<br />

dishes such as moussaka, tzatziki, Greek salad and<br />

souvlakia. Once their hard work was finished all that<br />

was left was to tuck in for the ‘taste test’.<br />

The Nicholas Hamond Academy hosted its annual<br />

Sports Awards Evening on the 8th March. Students<br />

were recognised for either progress or exceptional<br />

performance in a wide range of sports over the past<br />

year. As part of the evening the academy welcomed<br />

guest speaker ex-British No.3 tennis player, Jade<br />

Windley. Jade, who has won 3 singles and 16 doubles<br />

titles on the ITF tour during her career, presented<br />

the awards to the students and shared her journey<br />

in becoming a professional tennis player. The overall<br />

TNHA Sports Person of the Year 2017 was awarded to<br />

Year 11 student Owen Williams. This was not only for<br />

his ability in a range of sports but also his exceptional<br />

attitude towards learning.<br />

Students in the Iceni Class students at The Nicholas<br />

Hamond Academy have been busy assembling<br />

robots out of packing from Fairtrade products. They<br />

researched how our choices in the UK can make a<br />

difference around the world helping promote better<br />

prices and working conditions for farmers and workers.
