April
2017
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
I LOVE this time of year! There is always so much to look forward to
in our world of horses. The trail rides begin to be beautiful, warm,
and full of leaves and flowers. The show season gets rolling along
and brings with it that fun, anxious, thrilling feeling of going after your
goals. There are longer days and green grass for the horses
enjoying the sunshine. Doors and windows get opened. Screened
in porches become the hang out place at home. The bird life is noisy
and happy. I know the swallows will show up soon and there will be
fawns out with the deer in the evenings. Because of the longer
hours of sunlight, I can hike with my dog in the late afternoons or go
on a hack with my horse. Life seems full of options and we should
remember to take advantage of as much as we can, while we can
and because we can. I hope you are finding inspiration in the breath
of spring on the air. Happy Riding everyone!
Janet Stone and
Paula Rauscher
enjoy a ride out in
the fields.
In the Spotlight
Martha Kemmer
I have lived in the Tryon area since 1990. My business, Full Circle Farm, began when I leased
the stables at the Cotton Patch. My first visit to the Cotton Patch was magical. There was
tremendous history there. Stone walls+ privet hedges used by Olympic riders were still in the
Cotton Patch bottoms. I began my teaching/training business there. In 1992, my friend and
client, Alice Vaughan, built Still Creek Farm to enable the expanding needs of Full Circle Farm.
We were at Still Creek until 1999. Then I built my own facility on McEntire Rd. That farm is now
Sun Catcher Arabians. In 2006, Full Circle Farm moved to Burgundy Lane, downsizing and
concentrating more on equine rehabilitation, it is a very quiet, peaceful setting. I left a little
piece of my heart on all of those farms, which is why I love the Tryon area so much.
I was born and raised in West Lafayette, IN. I was the only person in my family to get the
horse “disease”. I loved horses from the very beginning. I started riding when I was 11 and
mucked stalls just to be able to get on a horse. After high school, I was a working student for 2
yrs with a wonderful dressage trainer, Miss Ann Ticehurst, in Tallahassee, FL. I went to
college at Purdue and graduated in Veterinary Technology. Eventually, job searches led me to
a Hanoverian breeding farm in South Carolina. I was hired as manager of Middlefield Farm, in
Blythewood, SC.
During my time in South Carolina I participated in the USDF
certification program and have instructor/trainer
certification through 4 th level. I have earned my USDF
Bronze and Silver medals. (Competition scores through
Prix St. Georges)
I still train horses and riders in dressage, but am doing
more rehabilitation work with our local veterinarians and
most recently, added equine massage/muscle therapy to
the services offered. In 2016, I became certified through
Mike Scott's Equine Massage/Muscle Therapy course. It
was a very intensive 6 month program, with 300 hours of
study required for completion. I am excited to add this
therapy to not only competing, athletic horses, but rehabilitating horses as well. The benefits
include higher quality healing, along with accelerated recovery time.
I have loved many horses over the years The one close to my heart was a German bred
Hanoverian gelding named Derring. I took care of him from 5 months old, bought him as a 4
year old and loved him all his life until he died at 30. He was a wonderful, brave horse with an
old soul. He would have carried me through a firestorm! Some years ago, we did a dressage
demonstration at the Green Creek Heritage Festival. I can't believe we did this now, looking
back! We rode along the busy road to the Heritage Festival into the police cars, sirens, pigs
and cows, mules pulling wagons and more! He was amazing. At home he was lazy but when

you took him somewhere he had such an adrenaline surge that he puffed up and performed
with ease. My current mare, Demeanor FCF, has somewhat the same personality. She has
similar Hanoverian bloodlines.
Equine rehabilitation is extremely time consuming, which doesn't leave much free time. I did
volunteer at the American Eventing Championships last year. I hope to volunteer for the World
Equestrian Games.
I have been an FRC member off and on for a long time. My long time friend, Sally Parkinson
conceived the idea of starting a horse club in our area in the early 1990s. That idea has grown
and evolved into the FRC we enjoy today.
FRC does a fantastic job of providing a venue for horses and riders to begin competition. FRC
is so incredibly good with rider and horse support, which is so helpful when we have a young
horse that needs extra time. I can't say enough good things about the FRC! One of my
students was amazed at the support shown to her green horse. At FRC shows everyone bent
over backward to support them. If it had not been for the FRC shows some of the horses I
have been involved with would not have had such good, beginning experiences to build their
future careers. Sally Parkinson would be proud of how the club has evolved.
the Spotlight”, please contact Carrie Knox at carrie.federici@gmail.com

FRC Educational Seminar April 19
Fires, wills, evacuations! Oh my!
On April 19th FRC will have a multi subject, multi presenter seminar.
The Polk County Animal Cruelty Investigators will
*tell you about their "job" and what you can do when you see an animal at
risk.
* present emergency evacuation preparedness for your animals ....be ready if
wildfires or other emergencies require you to evacuate
*suggest ways to protect and care for your animals in the event of your
death ....a subject we usually avoid but this year alone we had two situations
where there was no plan after the owners death....
*presentation of options available for the unwanted equine
You can join FRC in welcoming Margo Savage as she speaks about Equine Emergency
Preparedness on April 19 starting at 6:30 for socializing and 7pm for the program. For
more information check the FRC web site at www.foothillsridingclub.org or contact
FRC Educational Seminar March 15
Foothills Riding Club hosted another well attended and well liked Educational Seminar
March 15, 2017 at the Landrum Depot in Landrum, SC. FRC members and friends
gathered to hear Dr. Mason Shelton, PT - of Aligned Specialized Body Care, discuss
ways to keep your body healthy with exercise and other therapies specialized for
equestrians.
As always, folks mingled and munched before
the seminar then settled in to learn. And they
were not disappointed. Everyone left with a
better understanding of the way the body moves
while riding and working with horses and how
to deal with everyday aches and pains..
Some folks even won prizes. The one year free
FRC membership drawing for a non-member
was won by Barb Ketchum.
Margaret Freeman won
the member drawing.
She gets one free
therapy session with Dr.
Shelton.
The Educational Seminar for April will be Equine Emergency
Preparedness with Margo Savage. All Seminars are held at the
Landrum Depot, 211N. Trade Ave. in Landrum, SC. For more
information check the FRC web site at www.foothillsridingclub.org.
Educational Seminar is Wednesday, April 19 at the Landrum Depot beginning at 6:30 for
socializing and 7:00pm for the program. The Landrum Depot is located at 211 N. Trade
Ave. in Landrum, South Carolina.
Foothills Riding Club is organized for the purpose of promoting equestrian interests for all horse lovers, including
dressage and combined training, through sponsorship of educational and recreational activities.
