President Hollande is First Head
of State to Open Vinexpo
President promises new measures to support
“showcase” wine industry
Marketing Innovation
is Key to Being Seen
You know what they say: “You can’t judge a
book, by its cover”, and the same goes for wine
and spirits, right? Well not quite, as while the
packaging and the marketing that goes along with
it can’t make a bad product good, it is increasingly
essential in today’s world of differentiation to come
up with clever ideas to get one’s message across.
A perfect example is that of Wente Family Estates
in California (see our interview in this edition with
Carolyn Wente, Chief Executive Officer and Fourth
Generation Winegrower). Years ago already the
Wente family realised that having an excellent
product was not enough, and went about looking
at ways of developing ideas and activities around
their property in order to create a “buzz”. And it
works wonders.
The same goes for innovation in packaging, and
the “story” that is conveyed by this. At this year’s
Vinexpo, Odevie is launching a new concept
in Gin – not only aiming for excellence with the
blend of flavours in the drink itself, but at the same
time in a beautifully designed bottle, relating the
philosophy of what’s inside (read page 11).
French President François Hollande
yesterday became the first head of
state to officially open what is the
18 th Vinexpo trade exhibition.
He marked the historic occasion
by announcing strong support for
the French wine industry. Hollande
promised new measures would be
introduced to help support what
is France’s second biggest export
market.
In a wide ranging talk to show
exhibitors and visitors at the
Palais des Congres de Bordeaux,
Hollande said: “Bordeaux is not
only a capital of a region, it is a
showcase for France, the world
capital of wines and spirits.” He
added: “We must support its
growth and its place in the world.”
He then went on a near two-hour
tour of the show’s exhibitors talking
to producers and visitors on the
opening morning on the show.
Guillaume Deglise, Chief
Executive of Vinexpo, said it
was a “great honour” to have
the president show his personal
support to Vinexpo and the overall
wine industry by opening the
show.
Sommelier Ludivine Castillo, Eric
Top Chefs and
Sommeliers Go
Into Action
Live food and wine matching
with Gault & Millau
Throughout Vinexpo you can experience
how leading chefs and sommeliers work
together in a series of live food and
wine demonstrations hosted by France’s
prominent restaurant and gourmet guide,
Gault & Millau.
The concept of the L’Atelier Food & Wine
facility, located at the top of Hall 1, is to
show how chefs and sommeliers work with
flavours and aromas to create food and
wine pairings. It is part of Vinexpo’s overall
ambition at this year’s show to highlight the
importance of cuisine and food relating to
wine which is reflected in the wide choice
of restaurants and eating outlets across the
exhibition. The majority of which exhibitors
can bring their own wine along to enjoy
without paying corkage.
We are also seeing some clever and beautiful
designs when in comes to wine bottles (some of
which you will also see in this edition). It’s all part
of capturing the imagination of the public, creating
a pull effect, and making it a true pleasure for
retailers to sell product.
There’s no doubt that one of the major keys to
success is not just having a great product, but
having a great marketing plan to go with it, and
Vinexpo 2015 is THE place to be inspired.
TRADE TALK
How to Connect with
Customers In-store
Interview: David Trone - President and Co-Owner
of USA drinks retailers Total Wine & More
PRESS CORNER
LAUNCH PAD
VINEXPO
The inaugural edition of
LE PAN sees the light of day…
David and Robert Trone, owners
of Total Wine & More, lead a
knowledgeable team focused on
executing Total Wine & More’s goal
of providing an excellent selection
of wines from around the world at
the lowest price possible. We asked
David what his key reasons are for
attending Vinexpo…
We see great business benefit in attending
Vinexpo. It allows us to do a large
amount of business in a short amount of
time. We use this time to visit with our
existing suppliers to discuss the state
of current business and talk about the
years ahead. We also use this time to
meet with prospective suppliers and help
broaden and strengthen our offering to our
consumer.
How do you evaluate the current state
of the wine and spirits market in your
country?
We spend a lot of time looking at macro
trends – what categories are performing,
what price segments are growing, and so
on. We also spend a lot of time focused
on our customers and what they are
doing. Does the red wine drinker also like
scotch? Does the person who purchases
an average bottle price of $15 splurge on
Mother’s Day for an expensive bottle of
Champagne? The more we understand
about our customers and how they behave
the more we will be able to ensure we are
meeting their needs.
PERHAPS
THE BIGGEST
TREND WE ARE
SEEING THOUGH
IS THE
“PREMIUMISATION”
OF WINE
Which producer region/ country/
category do you feel one should
keep an eye on?
Right now the two hot categories in
our stores are red blends and Rosé.
Customers really can’t seem to get
enough of them. Spanish wines are
also trending very strongly for us
right now. Perhaps the biggest trend we
are seeing though is the “premiumisation”
of wine. Customers continue to purchase
up in price point so our growth at the
higher price levels is very strong.
What is your “secret” to a successful
Vinexpo visit?
Plan ahead of time. My team spends
months understanding who is attending
and who we should be meeting with
to make sure we are maximizing our
schedule. It is also important not to overschedule
yourself but to allow time to walk
the floor and make sure you are seeing
what everyone has to offer. Finally, you
need to make sure to wear good walking
shoes.
David Trone
President and Co-Owner -
Total Wine & More
David Trone has been involved in the beer
retail business since 1984 and the wine
and spirits business since 1991, when he
and his brother Robert opened two wine
retail stores in Delaware. Over the years,
the brothers added a greater selection of
fine wine, spirits and beers and expanded
into many other states. Total Wine &
More is the largest independent alcoholic
beverage retailer in the USA.
Jeannie
Cho Lee
LE PAN
Editor-in-Chief
LE PAN is a new wine and lifestyle
magazine being launched at Vinexpo
this year. We asked editor-in-chief
Jeannie Cho Lee what the magazine
will be like …
With LE PAN, we ventured to become the
world’s leading voice in fine wine, covering
all the major wine regions of the world
and reviewing a vast array of fine wines,
including rare vintages not available to other
publications. LE PAN also offers readers a
broader perspective on their passions in life,
from food, art and fashion to collecting cars
and adventurous travel.
What are you most looking forward to at
Vinexpo this year?
Our grand launch party, where we’ll formally
debut LE PAN’s inaugural issue. It will take
place this evening at the Palais de la Bourse,
a by invitation-only event for winemakers,
merchants, members of the trade and selected
media. Guests will have the opportunity to
meet and enjoy a special performance by
renowned Beijing violinist Lu Siqing.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Wonderful Wine – But So Much More…
When clever ideas are added to an excellent product, the results can
be spectacular
Carolyn Wente
Chief Executive Officer,
Wente Family Estates
Carolyn Wente is one of the driving forces behind the
expansion and growth of Wente Family Estates’ portfolio
of wines. She was also instrumental in the development
of the Wente family’s lifestyle business, which has
brought Wente Vineyards worldwide renown and
attracted visitors from all over the world. Today, Carolyn
works with fourth and fifth generation family members
and company executives to continue the growth of
Wente Family Estates and their portfolio of wines. So
far reaching are Carolyn’s accomplishments that she
was chosen as one of the honorees for the Leading
Women Entrepreneurs of the World in 2002 in an event
sponsored by J.P. Morgan Private Banking, Bacarrat,
Hermes, among other leading luxury brands, receiving
her award in Paris in April of that year.
Carolyn Wente, Chief Executive Officer and Fourth Generation
Winegrower from the famed Wente Family Estates in California,
explains the importance of staying top of mind and relevant
in today’s changing wine industry and in particular not being
afraid to take on new challenges…
In 2014, we opened the one-of-akind
Winemakers Studio to educate
consumers on all things relating to
winemaking. We also announced
earlier this year the launch of our
single vineyard 2012 Riva Ranch
Pinot Noir. It joins the Riva Ranch
Chardonnay in the single vineyard
wine series - only the second wine
to come from this single vineyard
among the family’s portfolio of
wines.
Located at the mouth of the Arroyo
Seco River Canyon, the Riva
Vineyard was Arroyo Seco’s first
vineyard planting in 1963, is a
special place to the Wente family.
And we just celebrated our third
annual National Chardonnay Day
at Wente Vineyards with a great
tasting of our Chardonnay portfolio
with media and consumers from the
Bay Area.
In past decade, you’ve opened a
number of high-profile peripheral
activities around the vineyard,
including the now famed golf
course and your restaurant and
visitors’ center. Please tell us more
about how these play in growing
brand awareness…
When I joined the family business
in the early 1980s, the family
was recognised for its leadership
in viticulture, oenology and the
world of wine business. But my
brothers and I knew there was
more to accomplish. We wanted
to provide quality experiences
that would exceed our guests’
expectations.
The opening of the Wente
Vineyards Restaurant and Visitors
Centre in 1986 was our first step in
the realisation of their dream for a
new appreciation of wine as a part
of culture in America. I have been
very passionate about opening a
restaurant and was thrilled when
my dream became a reality. The
Restaurant at Wente Vineyards
has become a culinary destination
continuously rated among the top
10 restaurants in the East Bay by a
number of leading publications. In
the summer of 1986, The Concerts
at Wente Vineyards followed,
featuring world-renowned artists
such as James Taylor, Elvis Costello,
Sheryl Crow and Diana Krall. Now
each summer, over 10,000 San
Francisco Bay Area concert goers
come to Wente Vineyards to enjoy
spectacular evenings of wine, food
and world-class entertainment.
In 1998, the Wente family created
an 18-hole championship golf
course designed by Australian
golfing great Greg Norman, which
is beautifully located in the midst of
the vineyards.
And in 2014, we opened The
Winemakers Studio as I mentioned
before. I like to think this proves
we are committed to become a
consumer destination and leader in
the Livermore Valley.
How do you make the most of
Vinexpo, and how does the event
fit into your overall marketing
plan? What will you primarily be
promoting at the show?
Vinexpo is an outstanding event
that allows us to meet with many
of our importers and business
partners from around the globe,
in an efficient and cost effective
way, to conduct business reviews
and discuss current market trends.
Most importantly we are able to
taste new vintages and highlight
new products from Wente Family
Estates. This year we are excited to
introduce our new Single Vineyard
wine to our importers: Wente
Vineyard Riva Ranch Pinot Noir
from our Estate Grown vineyards in
Arroyo, Seco, Monterey. We will
be featuring all our brands under
the Wente Family Estates portfolio:
Murrieta’s Well, The Nth Degree,
Hayes Ranch.
The California Wine Institute,
which you now preside, is a faithful
participant in Vinexpo. Please
tell us a bit more about the institute’s
activities and how visitors to
Wente Family Estates has
participated in almost every
SPECIAL FEATURE: SPIRITS & FORTIFIED WINES
New Design for Porto CRUZ
CRUZ, one of the biggest Port brands,
has unveiled a new and elegant design
for its classic range. A new look
designed to retain the elegant style of
CRUZ and to give better brand visibility.
The new packaging, with its distinctive bottle
shape, will be available worldwide and will
be rolled out on all quality levels: Tawny,
White, Ruby, Special Reserve and Pink.
With brand heritage dating back to 1887,
Porto CRUZ is an iconic brand proud of its
origins and expertise. Combining tradition
and innovation, the brand shares its vision
of Port by promoting a unique and creative
experience of tasting. GRAN CRUZ is one of
the world’s largest producer of Port. Based in
Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto, GRAN CRUZ
owns the cellars where over 65 million litres
of Ports are aged. Its production capacity of
25 million bottles a year makes it one of the
biggest production sites in Portugal.
With 7.5 million litres sold in more than 50
countries, CRUZ is a leading brand in France,
Portugal, Belgium, Spain and Russia.
Today, CRUZ stays true to its identity and
heritage while becoming more contemporary,
as the new packaging marries both the
traditional CRUZ’s attributes – elegance &
authenticity with modernity to create a look
with great stand out.
Sabah Bouaka, brand manager, says:
“Our objective with this new look is to
combine tradition, status and modernity and
I’m delighted with the result. A new range as
distinctive in the packaging as it is in taste!”
A New Vision of Gin
Visitors to Vinexpo will be able to discover Generous Gin – a new product
differentiated not only thanks to its spectacular bottle design, but also due to the
balance of its flavours and aromas.
The producers of Generous Gin say “it all
started with a dream – the dream of creating
a spirit that would resemble a tree of life,
creating the best flavour match that nature can
offer in one single spirit.”
It was the idea of playing with aromas like
playing the keys of a pipe organ, or the vision
of an extraordinary garden, a Garden of
Eden.
The idea behind Generous Gin was to create
an original, but simple product, easy to drink
and appreciate, and which could give the
best gin and tonic. It was to use the best of
what French tradition can offer: great natural
ingredients, in a small batch production.
The result is a bit like a perfume: a very well
balanced, elegant and surprisingly smooth
and aromatic gin. The special touch, say
its makers, comes from the perfect match
between citrus and floral flavours.
The bottle shape is inspired by traditional
botanist bottles, but with a real innovation: the
bottle is made of plain silky white glass. It’s the
first time this type of glass has been used for
a spirit bottle. The printed design conveys the
feeling of the gin in tasting: an experience of
refinement and generosity.
FRENCH PROVINCE: PROVENCE & CORSE
PROVENCE
Provence is known primarily for its excellent
Rosé wines, and they make up the greater
part of the region’s exports. This said, one
should not neglect the rising quality of
red and white varieties coming from the
region, despite their small quantities.
Provence is the global leader in high
quality Rosés, and thanks to a good
harvest in 2014, stocks can be built back
up and prices will remain accessible.
Overall, Provence produces 40% of all
France’s AOP Rosé.
Overall wine production is increasing,
and the sales value of Provence wines has
CORSICAN WINES
- A PROMISING
2014 VINTAGE AT
VINEXPO
With production down
slightly in 2014 in Corsica
due to inclement weather
during summer, the vintage is
nevertheless promising.
Corsican wines are represented at
Vinexpo by CIV Corse, the interprofessional
council formed in 2008,
including a total of 264 producers,
110 of which are private, and four
Château de Berne
Chosen by Apicius
Moulin des Costes 2014
Scoops Silver
Château de Berne received a boost this month when its
high-end rosés were chosen by the select Apicius Restaurant
in Paris as this month’s “wine of honour”.
The famed Michelin starred restaurant
of chef Jean-Pierre Vigato is renowned
for its relaxed and pleasurable
ambiance, and is to be found just a
stone’s throw from the Arc de Triomphe
in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
Bathed in country perfumes and
instilled with a time-honoured passion
for wine growing, les Vignobles
de Berne are three vineyards flying
the flag of the Côtes de Provence
appellation: Château de Berne,
Château des Bertrands and Ludovic
de Beauséjour. Three terroirs with
different climatic and geological
characters, offer up a varied and
colourful palette of Côtes
de Provence wines.
A key differentiator is
the elegant square
engraved bottle, as
the Vignobles de
Berne continue to
invest in top-of-the
range packaging such
as glass stoppers,
printed bottles,
black-tinted bottles,
designer labels and
cases created by their
own wine teams.
Bandol-based Domaines Bunan
has been scooping the prize
pool this year with its Moulin des
Costes Rosé 2014.
This very pale, light AOP Bandol Rosé
won the Concours Général Agricole
(general agricultural competition) silver
medal in Paris earlier this year, as well
as the ELLE silver medal.
Bottled in March this year, this
organically certified wine will keep
for two to three years, and matches
wonderfully with Mediterranean cuisine
or sushi. It is a complex blend of:
38% Mourvèdre, 39% Cinsault, 21%
Grenache and 2% Syrah, resulting in
a full-bodied dry wine – expressive,
elegant and fruity.
REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT: FRANCE
JB Audy Comes Recommended
The various properties of the JB Audy family
are hoping impress visitors at Vinexpo 2015.
The 2012 Clos du Clocher has received
excellent reviews, including recently in the
Wine Advocate Robert Parker, who said:
“This wine is impressive, and may be one of
the Clos du Clocher cuvées that lives up to its
great terroir and potential. It is a beauty and
still somewhat under the radar.”
Château Monregard La Croix / Pomerol is
described in Decanter as “Long, elegant,
mineral. Very Pomerol”. While the Guide
Hachette describes the wine as “a fruity, spicy,
supple and round pure Merlot with soft and
velvety tanins”.
Château du Courlat is described
by Robert Parker as “always
among the best in the appellation”.
Meanwhile another of Audy’s
top wines – Château les
Hauts-Conseillants / Lalande
de Pomerol is described in the
Wine Spectator as “full and
ripe”.
At Vinexpo 2015, you will
have the chance to give these
wines your own rating, and
chances are they will be very
high on the list.
CAMILLE DE LABRIE
LEADS NEW LINE UP
AT WINE PARTNERS
Camille de Labrie is a new wine
being promoted for the first time
on the Wine Partners stand.
Emanating from the “garage
wine” Château Croix de Labrie,
Saint-Emilion Grand Cru –
described by Robert Parker
as “always one of the sexiest
wines from Bordeaux” – this
“juicy, drinkable, friendly” wine
is a touching celebration by
winemakers Axelle and Pierre
Courdurié of their 7-year-old
daughter, who also designed
the label!
“We want to reach more
customers from France, UK,
Europe, US, Asia and Brazil,
to offer them the nature of Croix
de Labrie, but with a more
approachable, friendly wine”,
says Pierre Courdurié.
Another exciting new range
100% Chardonnay, Grenache
(gris and red) or Pinot Noir –
from where comes the name!
There are also new varieties
from Rhone valley, Alsace,
Burgundy and more.
WHERE
TO GO
IN
Bordeaux
CLUBS / EVENTS / SHOPPING / CULTURE
The Sweet Air of The Southwest
One of the most typical local specialities in Bordeaux is known as the Cannelé – delicious little
cake-like sweets that are a favourite for tourists. Perhaps the most famous are made by the House
of Baillardran. We thought it would be interesting to ask Madame Angèle Baillardran herself to
tell us a little more about her city and what makes it so special…
Angèle Baillardran
House of Baillardran
The beauty of the place and its history, the old
Bordeaux that has such incredible charm and the new
town that is increasingly dynamic, with the beautiful
quays, the gardens, the waters mirrors, and the trams.
Do you have a favourite restaurant and/or wine bar?
The Brasserie Bordelaise in Rue St Rémy, run by
Nicolas Lascombe. It’s very typical of the southwest
with a good atmosphere and delicious food. There are
numerous local specialties, including, of course, foie
gras, delicious red meats, fresh fish and above all, a
style of cuisine that one only finds here. The dishes are
simple, but cooked to perfection with quality products.
Visitors from abroad will adore this place because not
only is the food good, but the place itself is attractive
while also being simple. In terms of wine, I have a
preference for Pessac-Léognan red, from the Graves
region.
Can you suggest a ‘must’ for those on a first visit to
the city?
La Place de la Comédie with the Grand Théâtre, built
in the later part of the 18th century and now home
to the national Opera of Bordeaux. The square was
recently renovated when the tramway was launched
in the city around five years ago. Facing the theatre,
is the Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux, which has beautiful
terraces: a wonderful place to stop and refresh oneself.
IN TERMS OF
WINE, I HAVE A
PREFERENCE FOR
PESSAC-LÉOGNAN
RED, FROM THE
GRAVES REGION
Can you recommend an unusual place for the visitor
to discover?
The water mirror on the docks of Bordeaux. This is
a new feature here, as while the quays are from the
18 th century, the entire area was recently restored to
perfection, in the style of yesteryear, with beautiful
gardens and open spaces, and in particular this
extraordinary water feature that gives the illusion of
having deep water, but on which the visitor can stroll
as though walking on its surface. The perspective is
magnificent.
