PRESIDENT’S CORNER
I do have to admit that I was a bit disappointed when I was approached by a
few of the volunteers at one of our FRC shows and told that the competitors
had been quite rude to them that day. More than once and by different people
during the day. I have been a competitor myself, I have coached competitors
and I have judged competitors. I know that when competing, nerves can get
frayed and anxiety can get the best of anyone. It can be hard to remember that
EVERYONE helping at the FRC shows (and most shows for that matter) are
VOLUNTEERS. They are there to help the show run as smoothly as possible.
Often standing in the rain or the wind or the freezing cold or the burning sun -
just to help out. Most club organizations literally survive on volunteers. FRC is
a common example. All of the Board members are volunteers. The newsletter
is put together by a volunteer. The educational seminars are organized by
volunteers. The shows are run by volunteers. You get the point. Please try to
remember when you are showing or your kids are showing or your students
are showing, that the people around you are trying to help you and to aid the
progress of the show. They are doing their best and should be thanked at
every opportunity possible. When they don’t have the answers, it is probably
because someone hasn’t been able to provide them with the information you
are looking for. If you really do have an issue that needs addressing regarding
a volunteer, please take it respectfully to the office and let the show manager
find a solution. And ALSO - please volunteer whenever you can! It spreads the
work load and is such a welcome relief to those who are trying to put on a
super show for the competitors and spectators. FRC offers great care and
appreciation of our volunteers. We have all kinds of awards for volunteers and
we pay for time in FRC Club Bucks. Join us whenever you can!

In order to qualify for an FRC Rider Scholarship, you must be a current FRC member at
the time of your application. Additionally, your request must be for a rare educational
opportunity or clinic or a championship competition directly related to your riding
discipline. In exchange, scholarship recipients must give back to the club in some

Mix together:
1 1/2 QT whole oats
2 cups cracked corn
2/3 cup flour
1 bottle GRAND MA's molasses
Spray cookie sheet with "Pam".
Drop 1 tbs per cookie
Bake 20 minutes at 350* (ovens differ...335* - 340* may work better.)
Cool and bang pan bottom .
Store in airtight container.

Spotlight On Our Members
Betty Hill lives in the Green Creek area of Polk County,
NC with her husband, Dennis. She has been riding all
her adult life. She is an avid endurance rider and can be
seen riding the CETA trails. :Let's meet Foothills Riding
Club member Betty Hill – in her own words.
After living in 21 different places, I got to live on a
fruit farm east of Rochester, NY for 27 years. Snow
drove my husband, Denny, and I to this heavenly place
to enjoy miles of trails and golf (for him) all year around. Both our children and five grands live
in the south now too. My 16 year old granddaughter has inherited my love of horses, She has
done a 25 mile endurance ride with me and she wants to do more.
Horses have been my passion ever since I could think for myself, drawing and
dreaming of them until I bought my first Appaloosa at the age of 28. I longed to be a
veterinarian but settled for a career in math education. The farm in NY allowed me to have
several horses, do a little breeding and a lot of riding through the orchards.
I did lots of endurance and competitive trail riding; so, I wanted a place like this (Tryon
area) to do even more riding. Denny has been very supportive of my horse love. He thought it
was gonna be a fad, but 41 years later he is still waiting for me to get over it!
I have been fortunate to have 3 outstanding horses among many in my life- but Eclipse, a
half-Arabian palomino, was gorgeous inside and out and my prize long distance horse. An
accident with her, which caused chronic lameness, led me to my career now in equine and
human massage therapy. I spent two years curing her lameness. Massage therapy was one of
the alternative methods I used. Later that led to my current passion of human massage, which
has pushed riding into a close second, although I am conditioning for a limited distance ride at
Biltmore in May.
Massage therapy seems to fit nicely into my life and our environment. I can effectively
treat riders because I know how they feel.
When I'm not riding or massaging, I paint portraits of animals. I specialize in custom
pastel portraits. Some are hanging at the hospital, at Tryon Health and Fitness Club and
Western Carolina Veterinary Emergency Hospital and, at times, at the Tryon Painters and
Sculptures exhibits.
I am in the Polk County Community Chorus. This upcoming Spring Concert will be my
4 th performance. I am also in the Presbyterian Church choir in Tryon.
I joined FRC when we first moved here 12 years ago to meet people with the same passion
for their horses. I have stayed with FRC for the educational talks. They have been wonderful.

April FRC Seminar
Animal Welfare Topics
On April 19th, a large group of FRC members and several new faces gathered at the Landrum
Depot for a night jam-packed full of insightful information and helpful ideas. From 6:30 to 7:00
the group gathered to enjoy the scrumptious spread of finger foods and beverages provided by
our FRC Hospitality Committee. Community and conversation abounded as people shared
news, made plans, and chatted about the upcoming topics of the evening.
At 7:00 the ”Animal Welfare Topics” program began with Margo Savage speaking on behalf of
FERA (Foothills Equine Rescue Association), which is an invaluable branch of the Foothills
Humane Society that serves our community. She introduced FERA’s purpose and mission.
She shared many stories and startling statistics with the group. FERA is truly a multi-faceted
organization with staff that is based solely on volunteers. As always, education is key in solving
many of the equine welfare problems within our community. With a more thorough
understanding of what FERA does, our community can now better help them help animals.
Following Margo, Patti Lovelace (also of FERA) spoke on the topic of emergency
preparedness. With the wildfires and terrible storms in recent history, this is a topic that is of
great importance. What happens to your horses if there’s an emergency and you’re not at
home to manage the situation? There are several things that can be done. Most importantly,
make sure that information is readily available for emergency responders. There is a form
available to print (preferably on bright-colored paper) at http://www.ferafhs.org/forms and post
somewhere easily visible in your barn. It would be wise to also include copies of Coggins
paperwork. Making sure extra halters and leads are easily accessible and microchipping all of
your animals are other examples of simple, helpful ways to ensure your animals safety during
any emergency.
Next up was Lee Mulligan, a Trust and Estate Planning Lawyer from the boutique firm Strauss
Attorneys in Hendersonville. Did you know that only 19% of living adults have wills? That
shocking fact gave unbelievable importance to her talk on making plans for your beloved
animals in case of unexpected death. There are many practical and affordable options for
creating a plan for your animals so that the decision is not left to those who are not fit to make
it. Lee offers free consultations and also provided a very helpful “Equine Planning Packet” to all
attendees.
The night was rounded out with another talk from our FERA ladies regarding options available
for unwanted equines. We all know that far too often these beloved and beautiful animals end
up in terrible situations that are completely out of their control. There are always options

available for those that can no longer be kept and
FERA is wealth of information. Feel free to check out their website and reach out with
questions.

Ride-A-Test with “S” level judge Jennifer Roth
FRC is excited to announce a Ride-A-Test Clinic with acclaimed
dressage rider, instructor, and “S” level judge Jennifer Roth! On
Saturday, May 27th Motlow Creek Equestrian Center will open their
beautiful facility to FRC riders for a day that will be full of fun and
learning. This is a great opportunity to get some valuable,
constructive feedback from one of the best in the business.
Erik Olsen will be on hand to capture videos that all riders will be
able to use as they develop from their learning experience. We hope
you’ll join us!

FRC Educational Seminar – May 17
Equestrians Uncorked: “A Wine and Paint Event” at Mountain Brook Vineyards

having a traditional educational seminar
at the Landrum Depot, FRC will be
hosting “Equestrians Uncorked: A Wine
and Paint Event” at Mountain Brook
Vineyards for 30 lucky members. Tickets
are $50 and will include a wine tasting of
Mountain Brook Vineyard's Award-
Winning selection of wines, food and
hospitality courtesy of FRC, a 16x20
canvas pre-sketched with each
individual’s favorite pet portrait and
painting instruction from PetPOPS artist
Katharine Raush, not to mention a
glorious view of the sun setting over the
vineyards and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
PetPOPs will be donating $5 from each
purchased ticket back to a local animalwelfare
charity.

Calling All Volunteers! FRC Needs YOU!
We can’t run all of our great shows, events, clinics, and seminars without some
help from our awesome membership, and there are some great perks!
Volunteers earn $10 club bucks for up to a half-day of volunteering, $20 for a full
day, or $30 for set up of a horse show. “Club bucks” can be used for
membership, shows, clinics, and many other club activities. Finally, our annual
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, hosted by the FRC board in August, is free to
anyone who volunteered in the previous 12 months!
