PRESIDENT’S CORNER<br />

I do have to admit that I was a bit disappointed when I was approached by a<br />

few of the volunteers at one of our <strong>FRC</strong> shows and told that the competitors<br />

had been quite rude to them that day. More than once and by different people<br />

during the day. I have been a competitor myself, I have coached competitors<br />

and I have judged competitors. I know that when competing, nerves can get<br />

frayed and anxiety can get the best of anyone. It can be hard to remember that<br />

EVERYONE helping at the <strong>FRC</strong> shows (and most shows for that matter) are<br />

VOLUNTEERS. They are there to help the show run as smoothly as possible.<br />

Often standing in the rain or the wind or the freezing cold or the burning sun -<br />

just to help out. Most club organizations literally survive on volunteers. <strong>FRC</strong> is<br />

a common example. All of the Board members are volunteers. The newsletter<br />

is put together by a volunteer. The educational seminars are organized by<br />

volunteers. The shows are run by volunteers. You get the point. Please try to<br />

remember when you are showing or your kids are showing or your students<br />

are showing, that the people around you are trying to help you and to aid the<br />

progress of the show. They are doing their best and should be thanked at<br />

every opportunity possible. When they don’t have the answers, it is probably<br />

because someone hasn’t been able to provide them with the information you<br />

are looking for. If you really do have an issue that needs addressing regarding<br />

a volunteer, please take it respectfully to the office and let the show manager<br />

find a solution. And ALSO - please volunteer whenever you can! It spreads the<br />

work load and is such a welcome relief to those who are trying to put on a<br />

super show for the competitors and spectators. <strong>FRC</strong> offers great care and<br />

appreciation of our volunteers. We have all kinds of awards for volunteers and<br />

we pay for time in <strong>FRC</strong> Club Bucks. Join us whenever you can!<br />

ANNUALLY?<br />

In order to qualify for an <strong>FRC</strong> Rider Scholarship, you must be a current <strong>FRC</strong> member at<br />

the time of your application. Additionally, your request must be for a rare educational<br />

opportunity or clinic or a championship competition directly related to your riding<br />

discipline. In exchange, scholarship recipients must give back to the club in some<br />

tangible way. For further information on <strong>FRC</strong> Rider Scholarship eligibility, go to our<br />

Mix together:<br />

1 1/2 QT whole oats<br />

2 cups cracked corn<br />

2/3 cup flour<br />

1 bottle GRAND MA's molasses<br />

Spray cookie sheet with "Pam".<br />

Drop 1 tbs per cookie<br />

Bake 20 minutes at 350* (ovens differ...335* - 340* may work better.)<br />

Cool and bang pan bottom .<br />

Store in airtight container.


Spotlight On Our <strong>Member</strong>s<br />

Betty Hill lives in the Green Creek area of Polk County,<br />

NC with her husband, Dennis. She has been riding all<br />

her adult life. She is an avid endurance rider and can be<br />

seen riding the CETA trails. :Let's meet Foothills Riding<br />

Club member Betty Hill – in her own words.<br />

After living in 21 different places, I got to live on a<br />

fruit farm east of Rochester, NY for 27 years. Snow<br />

drove my husband, Denny, and I to this heavenly place<br />

to enjoy miles of trails and golf (for him) all year around. Both our children and five grands live<br />

in the south now too. My 16 year old granddaughter has inherited my love of horses, She has<br />

done a 25 mile endurance ride with me and she wants to do more.<br />

Horses have been my passion ever since I could think for myself, drawing and<br />

dreaming of them until I bought my first Appaloosa at the age of 28. I longed to be a<br />

veterinarian but settled for a career in math education. The farm in NY allowed me to have<br />

several horses, do a little breeding and a lot of riding through the orchards.<br />

I did lots of endurance and competitive trail riding; so, I wanted a place like this (Tryon<br />

area) to do even more riding. Denny has been very supportive of my horse love. He thought it<br />

was gonna be a fad, but 41 years later he is still waiting for me to get over it!<br />

I have been fortunate to have 3 outstanding horses among many in my life- but Eclipse, a<br />

half-Arabian palomino, was gorgeous inside and out and my prize long distance horse. An<br />

accident with her, which caused chronic lameness, led me to my career now in equine and<br />

human massage therapy. I spent two years curing her lameness. Massage therapy was one of<br />

the alternative methods I used. Later that led to my current passion of human massage, which<br />

has pushed riding into a close second, although I am conditioning for a limited distance ride at<br />

Biltmore in <strong>May</strong>.<br />

Massage therapy seems to fit nicely into my life and our environment. I can effectively<br />

treat riders because I know how they feel.<br />

When I'm not riding or massaging, I paint portraits of animals. I specialize in custom<br />

pastel portraits. Some are hanging at the hospital, at Tryon Health and Fitness Club and<br />

Western Carolina Veterinary Emergency Hospital and, at times, at the Tryon Painters and<br />

Sculptures exhibits.<br />

I am in the Polk County Community Chorus. This upcoming Spring Concert will be my<br />

4 th performance. I am also in the Presbyterian Church choir in Tryon.<br />

I joined <strong>FRC</strong> when we first moved here 12 years ago to meet people with the same passion<br />

for their horses. I have stayed with <strong>FRC</strong> for the educational talks. They have been wonderful.

April <strong>FRC</strong> Seminar<br />

Animal Welfare Topics<br />

On April 19th, a large group of <strong>FRC</strong> members and several new faces gathered at the Landrum<br />

Depot for a night jam-packed full of insightful information and helpful ideas. From 6:30 to 7:00<br />

the group gathered to enjoy the scrumptious spread of finger foods and beverages provided by<br />

our <strong>FRC</strong> Hospitality Committee. Community and conversation abounded as people shared<br />

news, made plans, and chatted about the upcoming topics of the evening.<br />

At 7:00 the ”Animal Welfare Topics” program began with Margo Savage speaking on behalf of<br />

FERA (Foothills Equine Rescue Association), which is an invaluable branch of the Foothills<br />

Humane Society that serves our community. She introduced FERA’s purpose and mission.<br />

She shared many stories and startling statistics with the group. FERA is truly a multi-faceted<br />

organization with staff that is based solely on volunteers. As always, education is key in solving<br />

many of the equine welfare problems within our community. With a more thorough<br />

understanding of what FERA does, our community can now better help them help animals.<br />

Following Margo, Patti Lovelace (also of FERA) spoke on the topic of emergency<br />

preparedness. With the wildfires and terrible storms in recent history, this is a topic that is of<br />

great importance. What happens to your horses if there’s an emergency and you’re not at<br />

home to manage the situation? There are several things that can be done. Most importantly,<br />

make sure that information is readily available for emergency responders. There is a form<br />

available to print (preferably on bright-colored paper) at http://www.ferafhs.org/forms and post<br />

somewhere easily visible in your barn. It would be wise to also include copies of Coggins<br />

paperwork. Making sure extra halters and leads are easily accessible and microchipping all of<br />

your animals are other examples of simple, helpful ways to ensure your animals safety during<br />

any emergency.<br />

Next up was Lee Mulligan, a Trust and Estate Planning Lawyer from the boutique firm Strauss<br />

Attorneys in Hendersonville. Did you know that only 19% of living adults have wills? That<br />

shocking fact gave unbelievable importance to her talk on making plans for your beloved<br />

animals in case of unexpected death. There are many practical and affordable options for<br />

creating a plan for your animals so that the decision is not left to those who are not fit to make<br />

it. Lee offers free consultations and also provided a very helpful “Equine Planning Packet” to all<br />

attendees.<br />

The night was rounded out with another talk from our FERA ladies regarding options available<br />

for unwanted equines. We all know that far too often these beloved and beautiful animals end<br />

up in terrible situations that are completely out of their control. There are always options


available for those that can no longer be kept and<br />

FERA is wealth of information. Feel free to check out their website and reach out with<br />

questions.<br />

Ride-A-Test with “S” level judge Jennifer Roth<br />

<strong>FRC</strong> is excited to announce a Ride-A-Test Clinic with acclaimed<br />

dressage rider, instructor, and “S” level judge Jennifer Roth! On<br />

Saturday, <strong>May</strong> 27th Motlow Creek Equestrian Center will open their<br />

beautiful facility to <strong>FRC</strong> riders for a day that will be full of fun and<br />

learning. This is a great opportunity to get some valuable,<br />

constructive feedback from one of the best in the business.<br />

Erik Olsen will be on hand to capture videos that all riders will be<br />

able to use as they develop from their learning experience. We hope<br />

you’ll join us!<br />

at the Landrum Depot, <strong>FRC</strong> will be<br />

hosting “Equestrians Uncorked: A Wine<br />

and Paint Event” at Mountain Brook<br />

<strong>FRC</strong> will set up a self (ie) serve photo booth at our shows this year! Weather<br />

permitting, you will have the perfect spot to capture the day with your ribbons,<br />

horses, friends, dogs, or all of the above! FUN!<br />

In addition, we will have a competitor hospitality table with light snacks for you and<br />

your horse. Just look for the <strong>FRC</strong> banner.

Calling All Volunteers! <strong>FRC</strong> Needs YOU!<br />

We can’t run all of our great shows, events, clinics, and seminars without some<br />

help from our awesome membership, and there are some great perks!<br />

Volunteers earn $10 club bucks for up to a half-day of volunteering, $20 for a full<br />

day, or $30 for set up of a horse show. “Club bucks” can be used for<br />

membership, shows, clinics, and many other club activities. Finally, our annual<br />

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, hosted by the <strong>FRC</strong> board in August, is free to<br />

anyone who volunteered in the previous 12 months!<br />

A new Volunteer Appreciation Incentive Program is happening this year. We<br />
