A Long & Rich History
A Historical Glance at the Areas of Ocoee and Gotha
by Debra Wood
PLAY
Tucked between Windermere and
Ocoee, and home to about 2,000
people, Gotha enjoys a rich history,
which caring citizens have sought to
preserve and maintain.
Early Gotha
German immigrant H.A. Hempel
founded Gotha in the late 1870s
and named it after his birthplace.
A Buffalo, New York, resident, he
planned to spend a few months of
the year in Florida to escape the cold.
Hempel, an inventor of a printing tool,
envisioned Gotha being an enclave
for fellow Germans.
However, Hempel enjoyed the
woods and wilderness so much, he
decided to stay, buying 1,000 acres
of land reportedly for a mere 25 cents
an acre. He then advertised in northern
cities with large German populations,
selling people on the Florida
lifestyle. He put them to work planting
citrus trees and running a sawmill that
provided wood for building homes
teacher. The town plan was surveyed
in 1885.
From 1882 to 1902, records
show that Fritz Moritz owned
the Brockman House, now the
home of the restaurant Yellow Dog
Eats. Census records indicate Dora
Moritz and Frieda Meislahn operated
a boarding house on the property.
H.P. Hill bought the building
and land in 1903. Then in 1909, Elise
Lizzie Brockman bought the land
and built a new residence. She lived
in the house until 1917. The property
was sold many times between 1917
and 1925.
Minnie Smith, William Harrell
and Virgil Rouse operated a store in
the building in the 1920s and 1930s.
Some may have also lived there.
During the ensuing years, it was operated
as Hamm’s Grocery and Fischer’s
General Store until 1988. It continued
as a store until 1999, when the
Morgan family purchased it and their
son, Fish, converted it into the casual
cafe Yellow Dog Eats.
The popular Yellow Dog Eats was once the Brockman House in the early 1900s.
The early 1880s were a time of great
Florida. A post office and school
In 1885, the Zion Evangelical
Lutheran Church began, meeting
was built that still stands. After having
Kaylee’s Story
Keeping Your Family
Safely Together?
By Kristen M. Jackson, Attorney
When Kaylee walked into
the law office in tears, she asked
to speak to a lawyer that practices
emancipation of minors. The lawyer
met her in the lobby and after a brief discussion with her the lawyer quickly
realized Kaylee needed immediate representation. Kaylee explained that her
parents, Jacob and Emma, were killed in a car accident 2 days earlier. She was 3
months short of turning 18 years old and had a younger brother and sister which
she didn’t want to end up in foster care.
Both of Kaylee’s parents grew up in the foster system where they met.
Jacob and Emma later married and were told by doctors that they would not
be able to have children of their own so they adopted Kaylee from foster care
when she was 4. Five years following Kaylee’s adoption, unexplainably, Jacob
and Emma were able to have children of their own. Along came Yvonne followed
by Liam. Before their tragedy, Jacob and Emma provided a good life for their
family although they had no backup plan or estate planning that would protect
their children in the event of their deaths. Being raised in foster care themselves,
neither Jacob nor Emma knew their own biological parents or other relatives.
When Jacob and Emma died, Kaylee realized because she had no immediate
family to turn to, she and her siblings could end up in foster care if she
didn’t act immediately.
From almost the moment of her parent’s death, Kaylee, frantically
trying to keep her family together, began searching for a lawyer. She was
desperate to find a lawyer that could prevent her and her siblings from being
separated and placed into foster care. Not really understanding emancipation she
just chose the closest law firm and walked into their office. Fortunately for Kaylee,
the firm practiced estate planning, probate and guardianship. The lawyer with
who she met explained that emancipation would not provide the outcome Kaylee
was seeking. Instead, the lawyer said an emergency temporary guardianship
was best. Although, Kaylee would need someone willing to temporarily act as
guardian for at least 3 months until she turned 18 at which time Kaylee could
apply for guardianship of Yvonne and Liam. Ultimately, she would need to prove
to the court that she had the financial means and parental commitment to be
Yvonne and Liam’s guardian.
A family friend offered to act as temporary guardian for Kaylee and
her siblings until she turned 18 years old. Later, when she applied to the court,
Kaylee was able to prove her financial capability of taking care of Yvonne and
Liam from the assets left by her parents and awarded to her through probate. In
the years that followed, Kaylee married and had a child of her own. Yvonne, now
a junior in college, and Liam, now a senior in high school, both still live with
their big sister, Kaylee.
Had their parents planned effectively, Kaylee,
Yvonne and Liam would have never experienced the threat
of being separated as a family. Their story is not a unique;
it happens every day all across America. If you haven’t
thought about how to keep your family safely together in
the event of tragedy, then it’s time you should. Contact
historic church in Gotha in 2000, but
now they have relocated to Winter
Garden. The Church of Christ
at Gotha occupied the small, white
church for a while, but it too has relocated.
Since 2006, the Foundation
for the Historical Zion Lutheran
Church of Gotha has owned the
property.
A hard freeze in 1886, bad weather
in 1888, and a yellow fever epidemic
led many settlers to leave the Gotha
area. The severe freezes of 1894 and
1895 decimated the groves, and,
eventually, Hempel moved back to
Buffalo. But, by then, the community
was well-established. In 1900, the
Census Bureau reported 202 residents
in the Gotha vicinity. Ten years later,
that number had increased to 298.
The area is ripe with history. In
1995, Orange County commissioners
designated the Gotha Rural Settlement
the county’s first historic preservation
district, thus future development
must follow the rural and historical
character of the community.
Palm
Cottage Gardens
One of the people who bought land
in the 1800s was botanist Henry
Nehrling, who was born in Howard’s
Grove, Wisconsin, to German parents.
Nehrling purchased 40 acres from his
friend, Francis von Siller, in 1886,
without seeing the property and arrived
later that same year for the first
time. From 1886 to 1904, Nehrling
spent one or two months each year
clearing and working on his land. He
planted oranges and built a small oneroom,
pine-walled cabin. He planted
palms and magnolias in 1890 and
named the property Palm Cottage
Gardens.
After visiting the Colombian
Exposition in Chicago in 1893,
Nehrling became interested in fancyleafed
caladiums. His work with caladiums
would make him famous.
Nehrling planted 250,000 caladiums
annually and had about 1,500
named varieties. He praised the
property, which also includes palms,
bamboo, night-blooming cereus,
tropical pond lilies and magnolias,
for its tranquility and peace.
In 1896, he purchased an additional
25.65 acres,
and Nehrling and
his family moved to
Florida in 1902. He
bought an 1880s-era
abandoned house
and kitchen near
Lake Olivia, dismantled
it, moved it
by ox cart, and fixed
up the two-story frame
vernacular-style home
and kitchen. The
house, with its heartpine
floors and sleeping
porch, is located
about 200 feet down a narrow drive
from Hempel Road on Lake Nally.
Nehrling experimented with tropical
and subtropical plants, testing more
than 3,000 new and rare species for
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He
introduced hybrid amaryllis and gloriosa
lilies to the Florida landscape.
Many of those original plants remain
on the property. Nehrling entertained
Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas
Edison and other luminaries at the
Hempel Avenue site.
Henry Nehrling’s house was the site of the botanist’s
passion for caladiums and other tropical plants.
Nehrling died at Palm Cottage
Gardens in 1929 and is interred at
Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha.
His research has been preserved
in manuscripts at Rollins College in
Winter Park. In 1979, all but 6 acres
of the property were sold off. What
remained was purchased in 2009 for
organization.
The property is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. The society,
with the help of volunteers, cleared invasive
plants, replaced rotting porch
Posters in the living room depict what
the home and gardens looked like in
the past, and books by Nehrling are
placed for browsing.
The society uses the site as an educational
center where people can learn
more about horticulture, environmental
conservation and historic preservation.
It is open to the public two Saturdays
each month.
One of the largest cities in Orange
County, Ocoee, has a rich as well as
troubled history.
Early Ocoee
As with much of Central Florida,
people from the North moved down
and settled in Ocoee. After contracting
malaria, Dr. J.D. Starke moved
to Central Florida in the 1850s. He
brought slaves with him to work the
land. The town was originally called
Starke Lake but was changed to
Ocoee, which means “no cold,” in
1886, when the town was incorporated.
The town also may have been
named for a river in Tennessee. The
lake is still called Starke Lake after the
early settler.
Bluford M. Sims from Tennessee
moved to the area in 1881. He purchased
39 acres in 1883, and planted
orange trees, grew tomatoes and cucumbers,
and founded the small settlement
of about 100 people.
Settlers established the first school in
1880 in a hut on Floral Street. A twostory
wooden structure later replaced
it. E.D. Perkins was the first teacher,
followed by William Blakely in
1881. He also served as postmaster
and justice of the peace. In 1913,
Blakely set aside one room in his house
on West Oakland Avenue to serve as
a library for the community.
The Tyler house on Oakland, built in
1920, remains standing and is a private
residence. The Pounds-
Salisbury House, built in
1887 on Floral Avenue, was
not so lucky. It has been torn
down.
During that time, trains
carried citrus products to
market and brought tourists
to the region. The Tavares
and Gulf (T&G) rail line
stopped in Ocoee. The
Ocoee Lions Club now
occupies its former station
at 108 Taylor Street.
Although Starke’s homestead
no longer exists,
Ocoee cattle and grove
owner William Temple Withers’
home, built in 1888, and the Ocoee
Christian Church, which Withers
helped to organize, remain standing.
Withers-Maguire House
Mexican-American and civil wars
veteran and lawyer William Temple
Withers of Kentucky moved to the area
in 1884 on the advice of his physician.
Cold temperatures aggravated his war
injuries. Withers knew Sims and thought
Ocoee would be a good place to live.
He built a magnificent heart-pine
wood-frame home for about $3,700
and raised cattle and citrus on the
property, just to the east of downtown
Ocoee. The house is now used as an
event center.
David Oscar Maguire purchased
the home from Withers’ widow, including
the furnishings, in 1910. Maguire
Lillian Irma Maguire, lived
there and died in the home in 1979.
The city purchased the property in
1984 for $155,000, and the Ocoee
Historical Commission restored
it. The home is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Women’s Club of Ocoee
The Women’s Club of Ocoee formed
in 1924 with members of the former
Community Club. Members collected
money in a building fund, and an
Orlando architect drew up plans for
a clubhouse. Eva Sims donated two
lots on Lakewood Street, and ads from
local businesses were placed on a display
curtain there. Ultimately, the members
obtained funding from the Works
Progress Administration, and the Art
Moderne-style clubhouse was built in
1938. It is the only example of this
type of architectural style in Ocoee.
The Ocoee Christian Church, which
was dedicated in 1891, still stands on land
donated by Bluford M. Sims.
Withers drew up plans for the Ocoee
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
built on land donated by Bluford Sims.
The church features chancel windows
designed and made in Belgium and
a bell from London. It was dedicated
in 1891 and is listed on the National
Register of Historic Sites.
Ocoee Race Riot
In 1920, Ocoee made the news
when a race riot having to do with
voting rights took place. Two black
men tried to vote in Ocoee, and one
of them was hanged. Many of the
details remain sketchy, but by the
end of the day, several people were
killed, both black and white. Homes,
two churches and a lodge hall in
the black community were burned,
and residents ran. The event only
lasted hours; however, poor race relations
continued for decades. ª
Royal Landscape Nursery
For personal gardens, offices, professional buildings or commercial
sites, Royal Landscape Nursery can supply the materials to complete
any landscape project of any size. With more than 56 acres of
“growing facilities,” Royal Landscape grows, sells and delivers shrubs,
Royal Landscape Nursery, Inc.
“Continuously growing”
Planting our roots here nearly 12 years ago, Royal Landscape Nursery is proud to
call Gotha home.
Together Steve & Connie started Royal over 20 years ago. We hoped that when we
opened in Gotha that we would be able to mingle with the
locals and looked forward to developing lasting
relationships with our neighbors. From day one we strived
to make our nursery a place to be enjoyed by everyone.
We pride ourselves on our quality. We grow much of
the plant material ourselves {throughout our total 56 acres
of growing facilities in the local area}…keeping an eye on
our quality and maintaining our prices much lower than
any large box store. We have not had any significant price
increased on our plant material over the years; I believe
that our average 3 gallon plant price has not increase by
more than $.25, if at all, in the past several years. Connie
says that they urge all customers to compare price and
quality. With that they feel very confident that you will
continue to come to Royal. The main location at 2204 Hempel Avenue in Gotha is not
only a garden center for residential customers but also a wholesale location for local
landscapers {as well as shipping plant material out of state}. Behind the scenes of the
retail nursery is a commercial landscape division, a landscape maintenance division, a
commercial irrigation division, and a hardscape division for pavers on pool decks,
sidewalks, patios, and retaining walls. Mia, the Emmerson’s oldest daughter has now
graduated from college and is a full time employee of Royal. Mia is in charge of
overseeing the day to day landscape maintenance services provided to apartments
communities and H.O.A.’s. as well as pursuing development of new accounts. Their
youngest daughter, Sophie, will graduate from high school
this year and will be attending college in August. Steve &
Connie hope Sophie will also come back to be part of the
company in the future.
Visitors to the website www.royallandscapenursery.com,
and members of the Email Club, will be among the first to
be informed of events and specials being offered by Royal
in appreciation of being valued customers. Royal has
developed a website that represents the quality and
standards of the company and posts information and
events for all to enjoy. Connie states that “We want our
website visitors to appreciate the appearance of our
website as well as they enjoy visiting our nursery or
utilizing our services.” Royal works hard to maintain a
clean and safe environment and urge all to attend our Retail events that are family
friendly and always lots of fun. This year Royal hosted an entire Customer Appreciation
Month: from March to April, offering discounts and prizes the entire month.
Whether you want to re-landscape your personal garden, office, community
grounds, or you just want to take a walk through the nursery and enjoy some fresh air
you are always welcome to come to Royal Landscape Nursery.
Contrary to what homeowners may have been told, every home
in Florida is in a flood zone. If your mortgage does not require you to
carry flood insurance, you are probably in a preferred risk zone and
can buy coverage for typically about $1 per day. Homeowners insurance
Protecting your personal safety is
the first priority when severe weather
emerges with homes and personal
property often running a close second.
After all, the home is not only a place
for comfort and sanctuary — it could
be your single largest investment.
As temperatures soar, so do the
chances for tumultuous weather. The
Department of Energy reports that
nearly 90 percent of major power
outages are caused by severe storms.
With the following tips, you can help
ensure that your home is ready for
anything Mother Nature has to offer:
• Maintain vegetation — Falling
trees and branches can wreak considerable
havoc on a home’s exterior,
along with possessions like
vehicles or patio furniture. Keep
trees and shrubs well-pruned so
strong winds are less likely to grab
hold of a wayward branch. If necessary,
consult with an expert to ensure
trees are adequately trimmed away
from the house to minimize your risk.
• Secure potential flight risks —
There are plenty of items that can
either become damaged or cause
ON THE
damage if they are swept up in a
strong wind. Top-heavy items like
grills can topple over, and patio furniture
could blow out into the yard
or even into your home. Don’t overlook
smaller culprits, such as gravel
and landscaping rock, which can
be tossed around and cause serious
destruction.
• Make time for maintenance —
Home repairs that seem minor can
become much bigger problems if
a storm exacerbates what’s broken.
Loose roof shingles or shutters
are especially susceptible to storm
damage, as are ill-fitting screens.
Regularly scanning your home for
defects and taking immediate steps
to fix them can help prevent relatively
small issues from becoming major
projects. Be sure to keep gutters
and downspouts on your checklist;
a heavy storm can produce enough
SUBJECT OF...
Preparing Your Home for Storm Season
standing water to flood your home
in minutes if proper drainage is
hampered.
• Install backup systems — Power
outages are one of the most common
afflictions of storm season,
but with the proper equipment, you
can avoid the danger and inconvenience.
A premium standby generator
like the Briggs & Stratton Fortress
system delivers ultimate peace of
mind. The system, which is permanently
installed and runs on natural
gas or liquid propane vapor, turns
on automatically to power selected
electrical circuits and appliances.
The systems are also compatible with
wireless monitoring apps that allow
homeowners to verify the generator
is ready before a storm strikes. Learn
more at briggsandstratton.com.
• Review insurance coverage —
Revisiting your insurance coverage
at least every six months can help
ensure you know what exclusions exist
and where you may need to add
supplemental policies or increase
your limits. This is also a good time
to update an inventory list that documents
all your major possessions
and valuables; store the list in a safe
place such as a weatherproof home
safe or electronically via email or a
cloud-based server.
Storm season is inevitable, but taking
the proper precautions can help
ensure your family and home are
ready to handle whatever the summer
brings. Remember, hurricane
season begins June 1.
THERE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!
Millennium Homes Realty Offers a Personal Approach to Real Estate
One of the most stressful experiences
many adults will face is buying
or selling a home. For a buyer,
from sifting through an inundation of
houses to choosing the right investment
to inspections and financing;
and for a seller, from the overwhelming
options of marketing to staging
and open houses to closing, the process
can be vastly overwhelming.
That’s where Courtney Shoultz
and Francisco “Cisco” Chavez
of Millennium Homes Realty
LLC come in. They are committed
to walking their clients through each
process with an unparalleled personal
approach, whether it is buying,
listing, renting, flipping, new
construction or investing.
“Whenever someone hires us, they
get a two-person team who is there
with them every step of the way,”
Courtney said.
Courtney has a passion for staging
and organizing properties. She
dreamed of going into the real estate
industry, and when she moved into her
current neighborhood and met Cisco,
who lives a couple of houses down,
their partnership was the perfect fit.
Cisco, a University of Central
Florida alumnus who attended
Dr. Phillips High School, grew
up in Southwest Orlando and has
©tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
Courtney Shoultz and Francisco “Cisco” Chavez
assist with every detail of purchasing a home, including
choosing the best features and design.
extensive knowledge of the area.
He is also fluent in Spanish and
Portuguese. Francisco started investing
in and flipping properties
as a teenager. He believes in real
estate as a great investment, as the
American dream.
“A lot of folks are intimidated with
the whole process,” Cisco said. “I
show them it’s not as difficult as it
may seem and not as daunting, so
they can achieve those dreams.”
Buyers
When it comes to
buying a new construction
or presale home, a
lot of the steps can be
overwhelming. From
inspections to walkthroughs
to financing, it
can take a third eye to
make sure everything
is in the right place.
Courtney and Cisco
provide that outside
perspective with inside
knowledge.
During pre-construction through
a builder, they can often negotiate
incentives like cash toward closings,
upgrades and more that the buyer
would otherwise be unaware were
available. They can also help clients
©tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
avoid common pitfalls, such as loading
up the house with extras that
don’t add value to the home. Clients
go to a design center and get excited
about all the different options but
may not realize what makes a good
investment for the future.
“We’re not just thinking about the
sale,” Cisco said. “We’re thinking
long term.”
“We’re not looking to do just high
volume sales,” Courtney said. “We’re
more of a boutique real estate
company, looking to be interactive
with clients and be there for them.”
Sellers
By choosing
Millennium
Homes Realty,
clients get a
two-person team
dedicated to their
every need.
For clients looking to list their
homes, Courtney and Cisco go to
great lengths to be a one-stop shop
for everything a seller may need.
As a professional photographer,
Cisco also includes photography,
videography and drone services
with every listing.
“We even offer staging advice to
make a home show-room ready for
open houses,” Courtney said.
Cisco strongly believes that when
a person invests in a home, he or
she is investing into the local community.
He and Courtney walk
their clients through inspections,
appraisals and more to make sure
they understand each step of the
process and make it as smooth of a
transaction as possible.
Satisfied Customers
“A native of Orlando, Francisco
has an in-depth knowledge of the local
market that was invaluable to us
as we searched for our new home,”
Ryan said. “We relocated from the
Midwest and didn’t even know where
to begin. Francisco took the time to
get to know us and helped steer us
toward, not only the perfect house,
but also the right location. He figured
out what we wanted before we did.”
“For anyone looking for a Realtor
they can trust who will work hard
for [them], Courtney and Francisco
are what the doctor ordered,” Scott
said. “Courtney went above and
beyond repeatedly, making extra
efforts beyond what any Realtor
should do and did so diplomatically
and effectively. We couldn’t have
done it without Courtney.”
“[Cisco’s] experience and knowledge
of this area is outstanding,”
Heather said. “He patiently guided
us through various neighborhoods,
helping us to find the perfect home
to meet our needs within our budget.
Francisco takes the time to find his
clients their perfect home. He never
made us feel rushed or pushed.”
When it comes to finding a Realtor,
clients want someone they can trust,
someone who lives in and knows
the communities they are buying or
selling in, and a neighbor who has
their best interests at heart. Courtney
and Cisco provide that personal
touch that makes every client feel
secure in the knowledge they are
getting the most out of their real estate
investment.
There are not many individuals
who receive recognition by
going through life using only
their first names. Cher, Beyonce
and Prince come to mind. But in
Southwest Orlando, the name
Ron the Realtor is immediately
recognizable.
Ron Ziolkowski of Re/Max
Property S.W. Inc. has made a
name for himself during the past 20
years. Ron’s mantra is “The harder
you work, the luckier you get,”
and he certainly exemplifies that
statement.
For Ron, being lucky is being
modest. He works hard for his
clients, and the results are tangible.
He epitomizes the American
dream, achieving his success by
exceeding the goals of every one
of his clients, one home at a time.
A resident of Windermere, Ron
Ziolkowski averages closings on
two homes each week; is ranked
No. 9 out of all Re/Max agents in
Florida, winning every award a Re/
Max agent can receive; and is the
No. 10 ranked Realtor in Orange
County. In Winter Garden
alone, Ron has sold more homes in
the past 10 years than any other
Realtor in the country.
Born and raised in Buffalo, New
York, Ron established his work ethic
at an early age. Coming from a
poor, single-parent home and always
working to help provide, Ron
obtained his first job at the age
of 12, walking 2 miles to a local
restaurant after school. Continuing
to work in restaurants through college,
Ron honed his customer service
skills. He also developed a
BUSINESS
passion for cooking. Married for
17 years to his lovely wife, Kathy,
and a father of three teenagers —
Evan, Owen and Kaitlyn — Ron
delights in preparing meals for his
family, finding time
in spite of being
a Realtor who “is
always working.”
Ron said he loves
everything about
being a Realtor. He
credits his success
with treating every
client’s goals as
the most important,
which has resulted
in the majority of
his business coming
from referrals from
happy past clients.
The average
amount of time a
house is on the
market in Orange
County is 80 days.
Homes listed by Ron
sell in an unheardof
average of 49
days.
Ron does it all
himself. He does not
have a team, buyers
agents or closing
coordinators. When
a client works with
Ron, he is there for
every facet, every call and detail
of his client’s transaction. Every
year he is ranked with massive
teams, foreclosure auction houses
and even national homebuilders
in closed sales volume with just an
army of one.
Ron’s website at www.
RontheRealtor.com encapsulates
everything Southwest Orlando has
to offer. His Facebook page gives
clients a daily look into the highpowered
Orlando real estate world
through a top Realtor’s eyes.
Ron has more than $350 million
in closed sales. He was voted No.
1 Realtor in Southwest Orlando by
readers of the Southwest Orlando
Bulletin for both 2015 and 2016,
earned recognition in Orlando
Magazine’s Hot 100 Realtors
for the past 12 years, and was
named Orlando Style Magazine’s
Renaissance Man of the Year in
2014.
According to Ron, if you are
looking to purchase a home in
the Southwest Orlando area, “You
need someone to be in your corner.
You need a proven winner.” Ron
knows every street in Southwest
Orlando, every builder, every floor
plan, and, most importantly, the
current market values of the area.
Clients looking to sell their homes
need look no further than the
Realtor who consistently achieves
above-market price for his sellers
in record time. The real difference,
when working with Ron, is the 20
years of experience and advice he
provides his clients every step of the
way during one of the most stressful
times of their lives. Ron arms them
with the ability to exceed their real
estate goals every time.
From Florida’s northern coast to the Keys,
this state is prime real estate for tropical
fruit, many of which even grow in Greater
Orlando. High in fiber and dense in vitamins
and minerals, these delicious beauties
are a healthy way to satisfy your sweet
tooth, cool off and spark up your diet for
summer.
Check farmers markets and Asian and
Latin stores for guavas, papayas, mangos,
carambola, passion fruit, lychees and longans.
Many of these can also be found at
your favorite grocery stores. Here’s just a
taste of what you’ll find coming into season.
“Guavas come in all different sizes and
colors,” said Josh Taylor of Do Good
Farm in Winter Garden. “They are kind
of unique and tropical, and they are super
delicious.”
Along with papayas, mangoes, star fruit
and a host of tropical plants, Taylor grows
four different varieties of guavas, which all
have different flavor profiles.
“The skin is edible and so are the seeds,”
said Taylor, who enjoys guavas straight off
the tree, or they can be added to smoothies
or salads.
Mangoes are one of the world’s most
popular fruits, hailing from India more than
THOUGHT
by Kirsten Harrington
“They should be a little soft and smell like
a mango,” said Ford, who sells tropical fruit
at area farmers markets. “And don’t worry
about a few brown spots on the skin — that
means they are fully ripe.”
Carambola, also known as star fruit,
have a waxy-green exterior that turns a
deep-golden color when ripe.
“Some people like to eat them like
an apple,” Ford said. “The whole fruit is
edible.”
Star fruit comes into season in this area
at the end of summer and into the fall.
Slices of the beautiful sweet-tart fruit can be
added to green salads and beverages or
used as a garnish for grilled meat. Star fruit
consumed before bedtime also might help
you sleep soundly because of the fruit’s
high magnesium content.
Passion fruit is a hearty, fast-growing
vine that produces egg-sized fruit (yellow
or purple) with a jellylike orange interior.
Cut it in half and scoop out the interior,
which is filled with edible seeds. Named
by Spanish missionaries who thought the
fruit’s brilliant purple color reminded them
of the passion of Christ, passion fruit can
be added to fruit salads and sauces for
desserts, or sweetened and used in juices
or over shaved ice.
Papaya is a slimming, cholesterol-free
way to satisfy your sweet tooth, with just
39 calories per 100 grams. Offering one
of the highest concentrations of vitamin C
of any fruit, it is recognized for its diseasefighting
properties. When ripe, it has a
delicious, deep-orange flesh, but can
also be enjoyed green (unripe) in soups,
stir-fries and curries. Scoop out a halved
papaya and fill with chicken salad or
baby shrimp, enjoy fresh papaya chunks
seasoned with a squeeze of lemon, or use
pureed papaya in marinades to tenderize
meat and impart a tropical flavor.
Longans are eyeball-shaped fleshy fruits
that taste a little bit like grapes but sweeter.
Also known as dragon’s eye, the best
way to eat these edible orbs is to squeeze
MATTER OF
HEALTH
May Is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
by Michael Steppie, M.D., President, Medical Director
Associates in Dermatology • 800-827-7546 • dermorlando.com
Skin cancer rates are skyrocketing,
both in the U.S., where more
than 3.5 million skin cancers are
diagnosed annually, and around
the world. In fact, one in five
Americans is diagnosed with skin
cancer at some point in their lives.
It is the most common form of cancer
in the U.S., with more new cases
than the combined incidences
of cancers of the breast, prostate,
lung and colon.
Skin cancer is a malignant condition
that begins with the uncontrolled
growth of abnormal cells. Recent
studies show it can result as an accumulative
effect from sun damage
(90 percent in the case of nonmelanoma
skin cancers). Florida’s near
year-round high temperatures mean
we are all at a higher risk.
Since 1975, the skin cancer death
rate among Florida residents older
than age 50 has doubled, and in
the past two decades alone, the
incidences of melanoma among
Hispanic Americans have risen
nearly 20 percent — a particularly
disconcerting statistic considering
that melanoma is the deadliest
form of skin cancer.
What are the different types of
skin cancer?
• Melanoma is the most deadly
of all skin cancers. It causes more
than 75 percent of skin cancer
deaths. One American dies of melanoma
almost every hour.
• Basal cell carcinoma is the
most frequently occurring skin cancer.
Although they are generally
easily treated, BCCs tend to keep
growing if untreated, and, in rare
cases, can start to spread.
• Squamous cell carcinoma is
the second most frequently occurring
skin cancer. An estimated 65
percent of them arise in lesions
previously diagnosed as actinic
keratoses. Most are easily treated,
but if not removed, some can
metastasize and spread to distant
tissues and organs, becoming life
threatening.
• Actinic keratoses are pre-cancers
that can turn into SCC if left
untreated. They are often an early
stage in the development of skin
cancer.
Early detection of skin cancer is
key.
Cure rates are high, and recurrence
rates are low for cancers that
are caught and treated early. It is
important to check for changes in
size, shape and color of pigmented
areas.
The Skin Cancer Foundation highly
recommends an annual full-body
skin exam by a dermatologist. ª

Through May 31 — Deadline For
Open Call For Artists
The city of Orlando seeks local artists to submit
preliminary conceptual renderings for a
bronze relief wall in front of the brand-new
Fire Station 2 in the Parramore district. The
Public Art Advisory Board makes final recommendations
for the artist selected. The artist
should be disciplined in sculpting and have a
professional knowledge of bronze technique,
and the artwork submission should include the
mounting concept as well, whether a stand-off
mount, bracket or suspension. Interested artists
should submit a bio or résumé, including where
they are from and discipline; a minimum of two
drafts of artwork in jpg format (small files); and
a brief description of the plan with timeline and
foundry’s timeline for completion and installation.
It is important for the project to reflect the
“Pride of Parramore” theme, an inherent feeling
within the community that spans decades of
culture, community and honor. For more information
