Education was the opportunity for 

change that took Southwest resident, 

philanthropist and businessman 

Harris Rosen from a rough neighborhood 

in New York’s Upper East 

Side to the renowned hotel investor 

he is today. You can’t go very far in 

Central Florida without seeing his 

name attached to exclusive hotels, a 

medical center, a Jewish community 

center, and even a college building. 

Knowing what education provided 

him in a blessed life, Rosen believes 

that anyone can succeed if given 

the chance to get an education. He 

invested into creating the Tangelo 

Park Program, a three-pronged 

program that includes the promise 

of a free college or vocational 

school education — including room, 

board, books, tuition and travel 

— to any youth graduating high 

school in Tangelo Park, a small, rural 

African-American neighborhood off 

International Drive. To date, the program 

has graduated close to 400 

children from high school, with close 

to 200 college degrees awarded. 

Also, the crime rate is down more 

than 50 percent during the past six 

years. 

His next endeavor is to contribute 

to another school project in the 

urban Parramore neighborhood at 

the OCPS Academic Center for 

Excellence, where students have 

the option of attending the preschool, 

then must proceed through 

eighth grade and on to Jones High 

School. When he announced the 

program last year, Rosen immediately 

provided college scholarships 

to the 14 Jones High School graduates 

who lived in Parramore and recently 

awarded this year’s group of 

scholarships. This will continue even 

though the new preschool does not 

open until August. It is a project that 

Rosen wants others around the nation 

to replicate and build upon in

succeed. 

“We just want help in letting people 

know that this is a wonderful 

opportunity for schools in America; 

that’s my prayer,” Rosen said. “We 

have been so blessed, and that is 

the reason we can help youngsters 

achieve more. If I can get an education, 

anyone can do it.” 

Development in Parramore 

Rosen’s program for Parramore 

would resemble much of how the 

Tangelo Park Program was established 

years ago, although it will be 

five times larger and have the benefit 

of housing students in a preschool 

building that will be open this August, 

when the main school opens. 

“In August, we will see students 

from the inner-city neighborhoods 

begin a new experience in preschool,” 

Rosen said. “The students 

will go through each grade in that 

building, and, upon graduation from 

Jones High School, they will qualify 

for the full scholarship into college.” 

The new school will also include 

a community medical facility and attached 

Boys & Girls Club to provide 

children with after-school activities 

while their parents work. 

The school was determined because 

of the fact that there were 

more multifamily than single-family 

homes in the Parramore community, 

which was prevalent in the Tangelo 

Park area, and thus justified the program’s 

preschools taking place in local 

individuals’ homes. 

Curriculum will be the same in 

the school building as it is with the 

Tangelo Park Program; however, 

the 48 teachers’ salaries, director’s 

salary, information technology 

needs, furniture repairs and school

Dream Turned 

to Educational Reality 

Most of the direction 

for the school program 

in Parramore comes from 

the overwhelming success 

of the Tangelo Park 

Program, which Rosen 

started more than 24 

years ago. 

“While sitting at my 

desk one day, it occurred 

to me that I needed to 

say, ‘Thank you, God,’ 

and count my blessings; and also be 

in a position to offer a helping hand 

to some people in need,” Rosen 

recalled. “We were the first in our 

family to go to college, my brother 

and I [from Russian and Austrian/ 

Hungarian immigrant lineage]. Since 

education was such an important 

part of my life, something that Mom 

and Dad emphasized if I had any 

hopes of leaving the neighborhood, 

I thought I would do something with 

education in some way [to help 

others].” 

Rosen collaborated with early 

childhood expert Sarah Sprinkle 

and a recognized Orange County 

principal to formulate and organize 

the plan to be known as the 

Tangelo Park Initiative, later the 

Tangelo Park Program. 

Tangelo Park came to mind as a 

community in need because of the 

frequent mobility of residents after 

residing in the area one or two 

years and a lack of educational 

support. The program included the 

component of preschools occupying 

residents’ homes in Tangelo Park, 

so children ages 2-4 could get a 

preschool education by a licensed 

caregiver while their parents were at 

work. 

The University of Central Florida 

got involved with mentorship programs 

for parents and students, 

which were about 60 preschoolers 

in 10 homes. Upon high school 

Harris Rosen believes education is the key to success 

for everyone. 

graduation, the students would get 

a free scholarship to attend any 

Florida community college, four-year 

school and/or trade school. 

The community was skeptical at 

first about Rosen’s intentions with the 

school program, concerned about 

whether this was for his benefit or if 

the program was only available to 

students who started in preschool 

and not older children. 

“I took care of [those beliefs] right 

away,” Rosen said. “I made sure 

any student wanting to go to college 

would go free of charge, and people 

went crazy. Twenty-four years later, 

at this moment, there is virtually no 

mobility, as people are waiting to 

move until their children graduate 

from college, and 400 youngsters 

have graduated from the Tangelo 

Park Program. High school graduation 

rates are at 100 percent from 

45 percent, and college graduation 

is at a 78 percent rate, compared to 

the national average of a 35 percent 

four-year college graduation.” 

Each year, an alumni party is held 

at one of Rosen’s hotels to bring 

graduates together to reflect on 

their stories and achievements. One 

of Rosen’s favorite events with the 

Tangelo Park Program is getting to 

assist in the preschool graduations 

with handing out diplomas and moving 

tassels on their hats.

from a worthy cause, Rosen 

finds it hard to fathom that he 

has not been able to get other 

individuals and organizations 

on board with supporting 

Parramore’s school project, but 

he hasn’t given up hope that 

education is still what people 

want everyone to have. 

“We believe that we have 

now created a new template 

for underserved communities, 

which we believe will change 

the communities dramatically where 

crime will go down, families will 

have hope again, and they will be 

able to enjoy the same benefits as 

other families enjoy,” Rosen said. “It

she still performs to this day. Brook 

also finds time to appear in local musical 

theater productions to the delight 

of Winter Haven and Orlando 

area audiences. 

Theatre South Orlando got its start 

at the Rosen JCC by offering acting 

classes for adult members. Soon it 

became evident that parents wanted 

their children to perform, rather 

than take to the stage themselves. 

Now, Theatre South Playhouse finds 

that 60 percent of its productions 

are youth-based and 40 percent, 

in which the professional teaching 

artists perform, are for an adult audience. 

It is important to note that 

all of the teachers/talent pool are 

experienced theme park performers 

with résumés from Broadway, off- 

Broadway and more. 

Theatre South Playhouse offers 

an extensive summer program for 

campers of all ages. In fact, it is running 

11 different camps during this, 

its ninth summer, each ending with 

a full-scale production. Ten of the 

camps run for a week, and three are 

currently sold out. Camp Wicked is 

the only two-week experience, ending 

with a performance tribute to 

Wicked, The Musical. 

During the school year, the theater 

offers group classes and private lessons 

in voice, piano, guitar and acting 

after school. There are also dance 

classes for kindergartners through 

adults. The semester-long dance, theater 

and music classes end with a recital, 

and performance-based classes 

produce a showcase of talent or a 

recognized musical theatre production. 

The Lion King Experience and 

13, The Musical were recent tremendous 

successes, and coming up next 

are Annie, Jr. and Legally Blonde, Jr., 

with auditions scheduled for August.

Brook strongly believes in the lessons 

learned by youth from acting 

in an ensemble performance. Aside 

from technique and theater etiquette, 

children acquire such skills as a sense 

of character and working together 

in a group, where everyone plays 

an equally important part. The cast 

becomes a family working toward a 

common goal. In order to become 

a good actor, “Everyone needs to 

come from a humble place,” Brook 

said. 

Theatre South Playhouse recently 

attained nonprofit status through 

the state of Florida, which means 

the company can begin fundraising 

to pay for its new performance 

space. Located in The Marketplace 

at Dr. Phillips, the 100-seat intimate 

theater will be called Theatre South 

Playhouse. Shortly after the June 

opening, its first professional performance 

season will be announced. 

The Disney Foundation has recognized

not-for-profit organization, and 

a search for financial support has 

begun. 

The acting company at Theatre 

South Playhouse was profoundly 

affected by the shootings at Pulse 

nightclub and will be presenting a 

volunteer, fundraising performance

teams finished with unweighted grade 

point averages higher than 3.0. Leading

need as much hurricane coverage 

because we are inland. I try to educate 

everyone on how to prepare 

for a hurricane and what to do if 

you suffer any hurricane damage.” 

The Atlantic hurricane season 

started June 1, and the 2017 

Weather Co. hurricane forecast 

prediction this season is 14 named 

storms; seven hurricanes and 

three major hurricanes. This year’s 

forecast is near the average of 

the actual named storms and 

hurricanes from 1981-2010. 

Andy has a few tips to make sure 

you and your family are prepared 

in case we experience a hurricane 

this year: 

• Make sure your homeowners 

insurance policy is up-to-date. 

You will not be able to make any 

changes or add coverage once a 

hurricane has been declared. 

• Make arrangements ahead of 

time in case an evacuation is mandated. 

Research your evacuation 

routes and secure living arrangements 

with friends or relatives. 

Don’t forget about pets. 

• Prepare a survival kit that includes 

water, nonperishable food, 

first-aid supplies, a flashlight and 

batteries, and an amount of cash 

(banks and ATMs may not be in 

operation). 

• Make sure you have an ample 

supply of medications on hand during 

hurricane season.

Date, brought to life on the big 

screen, as it is in production for a 

movie. The screenplay has been 

written, and casting will start later 

this year. The book is a hilarious, 

light-hearted romance about one 

divorced, middle-aged man’s quest 

for the next love of his life, based on 

Robert’s own experiences. 

“I used to tell my old assistant, 

Jenny, some of my dating stories, 

and she told me to write them down, 

and I had enough material to write 

a book, which led me to publish 

Next!” Robert said. 

Bob Thwaites, a resident of Bay Hill, signs copies of his

the pen name Robert James and soon to be made into a

After 34 years, Bay Hill resident 

Charles Bell retired from directing 

the First Baptist Church of Orlando 

Counseling Center. He is now on the 

staff of Chris Couch Golf, providing 

instruction on the mental aspects of

The Ocoee Fire Department and 

Citizens Advisory Council for the 

Ocoee Fire Department co-hosted the 

annual Open House. Fire Station 25 

on Bluford Avenue was open to the 

public, giving residents an opportunity 

to meet their firefighters and tour

the open house also offered hurricane-preparedness

be opened in 2050. The capsule 

contains items that represent the 

mood and issues currently affecting 

the town. Each paper item was


preserved in acid-free packets, 

metal and electronic items were in 

noncorrosive metallic bags, and 

moisture-absorbing packets were 

added. The lid was sealed with a 

special archival silicone sealant that 

cured for 24 hours and was further 

protected with wax. Included were 

items ranging from a FitBit, smartphone 

and standard landline phone

When children in MetroWest 

head back to school in August, 

one-half of the elementary-age 

students will attend a new school 

adjacent to their old one. 

Orange County Public Schools is 

building a new elementary school 

next to the existing MetroWest 

Elementary School. Currently 

more than 1,600 youngsters attend 

MWES, twice its design 

capacity. 

“This will allow students to have 

a school that’s typical, rather than 

with 200 percent crowding,” said 

Lauren Roth, spokesperson for 

the school district. 

With the current crowding, some 

children eat lunch as early as 

10:30 in the morning and as late as 

1:45 in the afternoon. Each school 

will have its own media center and 

playgrounds. The schools also will 

each have nurses, guidance counselors, 

music teachers and media 

specialists. 

“If the students are in a more 

ideally sized school, the resources 

will be adequate to the number 

of students,” Roth said. “Students 

also will be able to form more personal 

relationships” with the principal 

and other staff members. 

Two MetroWest Schools 

The schools will have their own 

entrances and parent drop-off 

loops, and the district is considering 

staggering the start and finish 

times to assist with transportation 

needs. Although the schools will 

be side by side, they each will 

have different names. Patricia 

G. Smith was named principal.

Construction is progressing at the new elementary school in MetroWest. MetroWest 

Elementary School will transfer one-half of its students to the new school this August.

The other sites were outside of the 

community. The original 25-acre 

campus was enough to accommodate 

two traditionally sized 

elementary schools. 

Students from north of the 

campus will attend the northern 

school, and students from the 

south are zoned to the southern 

school. No children from outside 

the area will be zoned to attend 

the MetroWest elementary 

schools. The new school cost 

$20.4 million to build. 

Windermere 

High School 

Also in Southwest, Windermere 

High School will open in August. 

The school will relieve crowding 

at West Orange High School, 

which has the highest population in 

the county at about 4,300 students. 

The new $93.5 million school has 

a capacity of 2,776 and is situated 

on 66 acres. It does not have 

a football stadium; however, one 

is being built at another location, 

with the county and school district 

sharing the cost of construction. This 

school faced significant local resident 

opposition because of it being 

located in the West Windermere 

Rural Settlement. The school 

broke ground in the fall of 2015, 

and OCPS is spending $2.5 million 

for architectural upgrades. ª
