oga is so much more than a physical practice. The physical poses<br />

serve as a catalyst to clear out the stagnation in our bodies and minds<br />

and enable us to tap into our own inner healers, essentially becoming<br />

an alchemist on our yoga mats.<br />

There is a science behind yoga. Yoga works on the nervous and<br />

glandular systems via various technologies of pranayama (breathwork), asana<br />

(movement), mantra (chanting), mudra (hand placement) and meditation –<br />

with each style of yoga putting different degrees of emphasis on each of<br />

these aspects.<br />

Our culture is shifting. Instead of a boot camp mentality, we are becoming<br />

more interested in becoming introspective and receptive, and becoming<br />

our own warriors rather than marching in a line to the beat of someone<br />

else’s drum.<br />

This change of pace and the demand for inward-looking practices means<br />

that many of us are gravitating towards yoga styles which work on the level of<br />

the mind, not just the physical body.<br />

In some way we are all asleep and need to awaken to our true selves. Yoga can<br />

serve to remove mental and emotional blockages and scrape the subconscious<br />

mind clean, all in the timeframe of a 90-minute class, ultimately bringing us to<br />

a deeper spiritual awareness.<br />
