A sensible young mother, when giv<strong>in</strong>g the breast to her new born ba<strong>by</strong>, will not neglect first to<br />
spend a few drops of her milk to the floor, on behalf of the kanda mpat. She will cont<strong>in</strong>ue do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
so too when gradually pass<strong>in</strong>g from milk <strong>in</strong>to rice <strong>by</strong> spill<strong>in</strong>g a few gra<strong>in</strong>s of it <strong>in</strong> their honor.<br />
When the offer<strong>in</strong>gs of the rites de passage are presented on behalf of the small child, no careful<br />
parent or offer<strong>in</strong>g maker will forget to add those for its kanda mpat. At a tender age the child<br />
itself will learn to beg<strong>in</strong> its meal only after spill<strong>in</strong>g a very little bit to his omnipresent<br />
companions. In a manual for a Buddhist brahman priest we f<strong>in</strong>d the exhortation not to go to sleep<br />
before hav<strong>in</strong>g spent some friendly thoughts upon the kanda mpat [24]. This is only a wise<br />
precaution, for <strong>in</strong> the case of be<strong>in</strong>g neglected they might turn nasty. When the officiat<strong>in</strong>g priest<br />
has reached a critical stage <strong>in</strong> his daily worship because now he is about to expel all evil be<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
his manual recommends him to be aware of the existence of his four elder brothers. Their<br />
physiognomy, when depicted <strong>in</strong> the treatises deal<strong>in</strong>g with them, is rather impish, and the place<br />
where offer<strong>in</strong>gs are given to them is shared with evil bhuta and kala. One never sees them, unless<br />
as a result of black magic, but <strong>in</strong> danger is reconforted <strong>by</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g their helpful presence.<br />
When <strong>in</strong> the late 'thirties f<strong>in</strong>al care for the dead (maligia) was bestowed upon s<strong>in</strong>ce long<br />
cremated persons belong<strong>in</strong>g to the court of Karang Asem, to the exist<strong>in</strong>g turrets for their ashes<br />
(bukur) one was added for their kanda mpat [35].<br />
Nobody is ignorant about their names, Anggapati, Mrajapati, Banaspati and Banaspati Raja (c 1,<br />
c 2). Most people moreover will know that the kanda mpat are also known <strong>by</strong> other names, to<br />
beg<strong>in</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the fetal development of the ba<strong>by</strong>, but not everybody knows <strong>by</strong> heart all those sets<br />
of four <strong>in</strong> which the treatises take delight. Characteristic for Bal<strong>in</strong>ese th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g is that they are<br />
identified with sages from the hoary past, with the rebellious sons of the Supreme God, who<br />
were changed <strong>in</strong>to unga<strong>in</strong>ly animals and banished to the four directions. They began to feel<br />
repentant, however (c 3), and then became the gods Iswara, Brahma, Mahadewa and Wisnu.<br />
When hear<strong>in</strong>g about this the little child, himself bhuwana alit, 'small world, microcosm', at an<br />
early age learns to feel himself as be<strong>in</strong>g part of bhuwana agung, 'large world, macrocosm', and to<br />
behave himself accord<strong>in</strong>gly. This feel<strong>in</strong>g of relationship between bhuwana agung and bhuwana<br />
