position to receive a message from the taksu, the guardian spirit of the compound, who revealed<br />

to him <strong>in</strong> his trance which medic<strong>in</strong>e to prescribe for a sick person. He even concluded a marriage<br />

for which a sengguhu had fixed the date.<br />

This balian cannot compla<strong>in</strong> about be<strong>in</strong>g ignored <strong>by</strong> his co villagers, as might have been the case<br />

when too many of his f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of expert knowledge had turned the wrong way. He is entrusted<br />

with the conclud<strong>in</strong>g of marriages, which, after the preced<strong>in</strong>g elopement, are cases where<br />

purification is necessary. But for the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g dozen or so of rites de passage his help is not<br />

<strong>in</strong>voked. Neither has he anyth<strong>in</strong>g to do with the ritual for the dead.
