The first episode f<strong>in</strong>ds place near a stream<strong>in</strong>g water where we f<strong>in</strong>d, stretched out on their backs,<br />

the clay figur<strong>in</strong>es of a male and a female called Malipa and Malipi (t 2), represent<strong>in</strong>g most<br />

probably the parents of a substitute ba<strong>by</strong>, bajang cholong. After a ritual dur<strong>in</strong>g a quarter of an<br />

hour they are left on their places; the scene of activities is now the domestic courtyard. Much<br />

attention is given to that bajang cholong <strong>in</strong> the form of a young coconut but <strong>in</strong> the end it is buried<br />

outside the ma<strong>in</strong> gate. The real ba<strong>by</strong> is now adorned with silver or even gold r<strong>in</strong>gs around pulses<br />

and ankles. It is for the first time brought <strong>in</strong>to contact with the earth (s 3), a ritual which <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Javanese Pr<strong>in</strong>cipalities too was celebrated. In Kalimantan of old the boy child of a chief with his<br />

feet touched iron and stone, the head of a killed buffalo and of a killed slave. This usage is<br />

neither Muslim nor H<strong>in</strong>du but precedes both religions.<br />

In <strong>Bali</strong> the ba<strong>by</strong> is kept under the plaited basket which serves to give a fight<strong>in</strong>g cock the pleasure<br />

of look<strong>in</strong>g at the passers <strong>by</strong>, but now it is called sok suddha mala, 'cleansed of impurities', but<br />

meant is: 'clean<strong>in</strong>g from impurities' (s, t 2). The ba<strong>by</strong> is kept on the lap of a small child which<br />

has not yet changed teeth, sitt<strong>in</strong>g on a stone <strong>in</strong> a hole <strong>in</strong> the ground. Its hand is kept <strong>in</strong> the water<br />

of a bas<strong>in</strong> and helped to fish up small golden fish, a sure sign that <strong>in</strong> the course of his life he will<br />

be able to look after himself and make his fortune (s).<br />

As for this occasion an elaborate and expensive set of offer<strong>in</strong>gs has been made, the preced<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ritual activities, promot<strong>in</strong>g the ba<strong>by</strong>'s welfare, are comb<strong>in</strong>ed with the name giv<strong>in</strong>g and even the<br />

first ritual haircutt<strong>in</strong>g (t 3, t 4), which accord<strong>in</strong>g to some authors should only be celebrated when<br />

the child is not 105 days old but 210, or even some time after that, but before the appearance of<br />

the first tooth.<br />

A girl's first menses should be celebrated, and not long afterwards her teeth should be filed (u),<br />

though frequently toothfil<strong>in</strong>g is postponed till marriage, this first or last of the so called manusa<br />

yadna, offer<strong>in</strong>gs for the sake of mank<strong>in</strong>d.
